Teams hated on by the National Media.

Recommended Posts

Ok I was just wondering. What teams do the National media hate on? It can be NCAA, NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, any sport. What team is always put down no matter how good or bad they do? And what teams are darlings? Teams that can do NO wrong?

I'd say a team for me that I noticed that is hated on is OU in football. I swear I spent most of this season listening to them put down and then when they finally were toppled the media was like "Yes! FINALLY! HAHA! They suck!"

And for the darlings. As much as I like them I think the Eagles can do no wrong. They're always in the spotlight and people are always all up on McNabb's nuts.

Yes the media hated OU. Everytime they came up for air while sucking off the Sooners they blasted them. Seriously, they were putting OU in the pantheon of all time greats. I don't see how you could say they were hated.

I think the K.C. Chiefs were media darlings for most of the year. The national media wanted to think that they had finally had their defense turned around, when in reality they just got in a turnover run for the first half of the year making them look good. Once they stopped getting turnovers you saw what their D was really like.

could you possibly stop posting about how the entire world is plotting against OU even as we speak?

Duke basketball. It seems like they have the 12 disciples playing for Jesus in most of the media's eyes.

I think that you're a little sensitive on the Oklahoma thing because you're a fan. Anytime someone says something bad about them, you'll notice. But, for the majority of the year, the media was hyping them up as better than most NFL teams.

The national media (e.g. ESPN, CNNSI, etc) gave OU the verbal fellatio for a long, long time, and thus most fans that otherwise were apathetic about them grew to hate them. Thus, most of the OU hatred you heard was from fans that were sick of the smoke that was blown up their ass, not from the media themselves.

In terms of who the media is in love with, and who they seem to dislike the most:

NFL: loves the Packers, especially Favre, & dislikes the Redskins, especially Snyder

NBA: loves the Lakers & dislikes the Mavs (but mostly because they hate Cuban

MLB: loves the Red Sox, Yankees, & Cubs, and dislikes ??? (I can't think of any team that the national folks seem to root against)

NHL: does the American media even know that this league is still in operation?!? I'd say the entire league is disliked by the national media.

The LA Lakers.

Every year they are the "hands down favorites to win the title" and "The title comes through LA".

Am I the only one that noticed that San Antonio won the fucking thing last year. Beating the Lakers?

Better than most NFL teams? I retract my statement then. The Sooners would get KILLED by any NFL team......even the Cardinals. Hell any NCAA team would. It'd be boys playing with men in a different game.

Anyways......I've also noticed that the media loves pretty much any ACC team in NCAA B-Ball.....then again......that's where most good teams are.

One team I don't know about b/c I don't pay enough attention is The Lakers. Media darlings or hated? B/c really I've honestly never met a Laker fan in my life and it seems all of there fans are bigtime movie stars. And then I hear various factions on TV arguing over if they're going to win the championship this year or not. They're the Dallas Cowboys of the NBA........aren't they?

In Canada it's the Leafs. Toronto is Canada's largest media centre, so as a result the Leafs are probably the highest profile team in the country.

It also makes them more hated than the other Canadian teams by hockey fans, partially because of the pimping of the team, partially because of the whole "Toronto is the center of the universe" attitude of the media.

I think its every college basketball team from North Carolina and South Carolina. All of them Duke, North Carolina Tar Heels, NC State, and the 10 UNC schools that make the tourny every year.

When people say they hate OU football I think they actually mean they hate the BCS system and not the school directly.

Not a team, but Mike Tyson's love/hate relationship with the media is pretty astounding. He started out as a former troubled youth made good, with great fundamental boxing skills, and explosive punching power. A fine athlete and role model.

Then he lost, and got thrown in jail, and he was instantly what was "wrong" with the sport. Which more or less could be true.

He got a second chance right around his release, where he knocked Hurricane Peter McNeely right into a self-mocking pizza hut commercial.

Then he had the ordeal with Holyfield, and has been painted as a total nutbar ever since.

My personal favorite Tyson moment was on Jimmy Kimmel, where he sang "Ooh, Baby Baby" to some actress who just sat there in absolute shock and terror as Mike belted it out. Currently, I think his support/detractors are about 50-50.

Here's what I don't get.

Yes the football team at OU did get the verbal BJ's when they were good. But when they fell they were suddenly lambasted and torn to shreds.

Now the basketball team gets the verbal BJ and even though they oh I don't know......FUCKING SUCK.......they still are given the BJ whenever I hear them mentioned.

I don't understand that.

I haven't heard anyone that thinks OU is that good this year. Most everyone I read has them as a bubble team.

Oklahoma football was being compared with NFL teams last year, so I would say they're more media darlings than being hated on. Plus, Jason White won the Heisman even though he shouldn't have, so that's some media darling-edge going on right there.

I love Mike Tyson (seriously, he's like No. 1 or 2 on my list of all-time favorite athletes), and I hate how the media has turned on him like they have.

The media also seems to hate on the Yankees, as they always have to bring up their payroll every 10 seconds.

And I guess you could say they hate on the Clippers and Bengals, but it's not like those teams haven't given them sufficient material to hate.

Maybe if OU didn't blow every game when there was actually something on the line last year the media wouldn't have turned on them.

Besides..."hating OU" last year IN YOUR OPINION was stating that they didn't deserve to be in the Championship Game.

*looks how things played out*

Yep.

ESPN seems to have a strong hatred of the Browns. They never get discussed in a postive light unless it involves Jim Brown.

Yep.

*checks that OU won the National Title in 2000*

*checks that OU won the Big XII in 2000 and 2002*

*checks that OU won the Cotton Bowl in 2001*

*checks that OU won the Rose Bowl in 2002*

*checks that OU won 12 games straight this season before every being defeated*

Yup.......they blow everything.

Have you ever seen an OU game before this season BPS? Because I mean you really seem to hate them and think they're a bad team. Well they were #1 in all the pre-season polls and throughout the whole season until the Big XII title game. And they finished #3 in the country. Doesn't sound like a bad team at all.

I'd say that's the same with every team the media projects as being good and then the team disappoints. The media does so many 180's it's hard to say their singling anyone out.

Well I think the Bengals shocked everyone this year. I wouldn't say they were as bad as they used to be.

My point was OBVIOUSLY about last season when they got blown by the media until they got blown out.

But they still weren't a bad team last season. That's my point. You act like they finished 117 out of 117 and was only in the National Title game b/c they paid off the BCS.

I don't want to get into another OU debate. They didn't win the National Title and they finished 3rd in the Nation. We'll pick this up next season.

No...I act like they finished THIRD heading into the Title game.

PERIOD.

You are so overdramatic.

THIRD out of 117.

Great...but not deserving of the title game.

What SC teams get tons of love from the media? Certainly not the Gamecocks of U.S.C nor Clemson. College of Charleston seldom gets any mention.

Heck, the closest thing we've had in terms of national mention was Jim Rome mentioning that the Cocks slaughtering of Charleston Southern 38-0 in baseball showed how bad college baseball really is.

ESPN loves whatever teams won the championship last season. Expect Marlinmania on Baseball Tonight.

This goes for the NHL as well...Steve "Out With a Bulging Dick" Levy said "There's no reason why the New Jersey Devils won't win the Stanley Cup for the fourth time in ten years." From the looks of things, somebody found a reason! ESPN also adores the "3D" (Detroit, Denver, and Dallas) plus the Rangers. Judging by the fact that there are more nationally televised Hawks home games (2 or 3) a year than regional (zero), somebody's got a soft spot for the Hawks there. They shit on the Senators, and the other Canadian teams for that matter. The worst was not televising Ottawa's first round against Long Island but having no qualms about that action-packed Jersey-Boston series. I know, it's not like they won the freaking President's Trophy in 2003, but still.

College Basketball:

Easy for the teams getting all the love: Duke and UNC. Mostly Duke. Also any big school that features a coach out of the "I Am Bigger Than The Institution" mold (Coach K, Roy Williams, ect) There is nothing the likes of Dick Vitale love to do more than to pump up any coach with a big squad and a big ego because "He does it the RIGHT way"

Hate: Bobby Knight. Yeah for good reasons but still. Georgetown during the Thompson years

MLB:

The love goes generally to the Redsox/Cubs. And depending on the media the Yankees (Yankee hate comes from columnists, radio show hosts, ect, not the ones doing the actual game broadcasts/ESPN highlights) Braves got some love at the start of the run, now its "getting old" Also anytime a team "comes from nowhere" they get alot of love. Especially a "small market team" like the Twins or Royals

Hate: Yankees by the opinion media. Probably the Brewers for obvious reasons. Teams with alot of non-media-friendly players get it as well (its with all sports) the Indians of the Albert Belle years is a good example

NFL

Radiers get some love. Pats get love. Usually teams that rip off "out of nowhere" starts get a ton of love, especially if they have a "can they go undefeated" run" When they are good the 49ners and Cowboys of course.

Hate: Cowboys, 49ners, Redskins, Pats and Ravens

I think it's because of Darren Pang.

And I've just accepted that ESPN doesn't believe that Ottawa plays a regular season.

I don't think a team in general is hated but more so the owner.

George Steinbrenner and the Yankees

Mike Brown and the Bengals

Bill Bidwell and the Cardnials

The Selig family and the Brewers

Al Davis and the Raiders

Jerry Reinsdorf and the Bulls after Micheal Jordan left.

Donald Sterling and the Clippers

I bet he could turn any thread on TSM into a thread on OU football

Well, that goes with the fact that they don't believe Ottawa makes the playoffs, either.

"What is this 'Ca-na-da' place we keep hearing about?"
