Mik 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 For those who don't know, Bill Simmons does running diaries on a lot of the big events in sports (If ESPN doesn't send him to them). Well, he did one on WM XX and here it is... http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story...=simmons/040315 Some of you might not like what he says, especially about Eddy. TheBostonStrangler 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 He's just a guy who hasn't watched wrestling in a couple of years. He has no clue who Lesnar is, how Guerrero's evolved, about Benoit's struggle, or any of the other storylines. It makes it a little harder to enjoy it that way. Kaertos 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 Guys, as much as I hate to say it, this is pretty close to the casual fans view of the show the first time they check it out in a while. Remember that while we think Benoit and Eddie having the Big Belts is the greatest thing since sliced bread, the casual fan can barely remember who they are... The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 Well...that was terrible. He's doesn't like that Eddy and Benoit are champions because they aren't big stars. And here I thought the point was to make them big stars...
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 6:03 -- Ugh. Just a ridiculous match -- guys are getting pinned every 20 seconds. It's insulting. I like my sports entertainment to be at least somewhat real. And yes, it's just starting to dawn on me that I paid 50 bucks for this. Can't say he's wrong here. He's just a guy who hasn't watched wrestling in a couple of years. He has no clue who Lesnar is, how Guerrero's evolved, about Benoit's struggle, or any of the other storylines. It makes it a little harder to enjoy it that way. Ok... and? The WWE hasn't done a good job presenting Guerrero's "evolution" or Benoits "struggle"; so can you blame him? NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 Simmons on Kane/UT matchup: "7:39 -- I'm in shock. Honestly, I'm in disbelief. I haven't had time to follow wrestling for the past two years ... now I'm back and the Undertaker is still wrestling Kane? "This is a match made in hell!" JR screams. He's not kidding. If you end up in hell, you actually have to watch tapes of these guys wrestling for the rest of eternity. They're almost as bad a couple as Bobby Bacala and Janice Soprano." LOL. Remember that while we think Benoit and Eddie having the Big Belts is the greatest thing since sliced bread, the casual fan can barely remember who they are... But that means everyone if you stopped watching wrestling. If you stopped watching in 94 and someone said Austin was champion in 98 you would say what the hell. You would not believe that HHH is the most dominant heel in WWE history if you stopped watching in 96. I could go on and on but I think I'll stop.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 Only on the smarks board would people complain after the fake sport that they like gets a full article on a page that reaches the level of ESPN. Yes, it wasn't the most flattering of reviews, and he didn't lick the sacs of everyone's favorites, but to the average person (e.g. non-wrestling fan) it was a very accurate portrayal of the show. Just be happy that ESPN is allowing him to even talk about wrestling, and move on.
Guest OctoberBlood Report post Posted March 15, 2004 Haha, Bill Simmons continues to suck in everything he writes.
Guest Coffey Report post Posted March 15, 2004 There is no fucking way that this cake-ass mother-fucker is in his thirties! He's just too goddamn immature. Talking about people needing implants and wrestling fans not have girlfriends and all this other nonsense. I'd slap the bastard if I saw him.
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 why does everyone here hate the review? I thought it was funny for the most part. So he doesn't like Eddy or Benoit, who gives a flying fuck, it is not like he is openly challenging who I like, he is just giving his opinion, and I happen to think he is right on, regarding a lot of his opinions(of WM).
Spaceman Spiff 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 Yeah, his views on Eddy & Brock are off, but he makes up for it by shitting all over Taker & Kane (and their match), and finds fault w/ a cripple (Austin) beating up the stars for tomorrow. So, it all balances out in the end.
Guest OctoberBlood Report post Posted March 15, 2004 why does everyone here hate the review? Uh, because we can, and because it sucked? Shyeah .. Why is everyone hating on people who hate the review? Huh? Just keep quite, talk about the freaking article, don't ask stupid questions like why people dislike something, when it's obvious, the article sucks. Who cares who wrote it. His first few articles were funny, now it's just repetitive and lame. People don't HAVE to share the same opinion.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 I found the review funny and he doesn't even hate the Benoit win, he just doesn't know how the hell to respond to it. Just like every other wrestling fan if they left wrestling for a year and came back. I thought it was an excellent review.

I just thought that the majority of his opinions fell in line with the majority of the people on this board, so I was suprised to see the review get an overwhelmingly bad response. Guest Coffey Report post Posted March 15, 2004 I like how his #4 Greatest Wrestlemania Moment is Stone Cold Steve Austin beating Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 15. Obviously credible.
Mik 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 Yeah, obviously. How can he make such a glaring oversight? His entire article now means absolutely nothing and his opinion completely invalid. You're stretching, chief.
Guest Coffey Report post Posted March 15, 2004 How am I stretching anything? I'm assuming that it wasn't just a typing error...which means he didn't bother to back-check anything that he wrote. Obviously it's just the perspective of a casual fan, and that's fine, but he could bother to get his facts correct. Especially if he was going to blast everything from Eddie being champion to Stacy's small bust size.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Report post Posted March 15, 2004 "8:30 -- "The winner of this belt ... and neeeeeeewwwwwwwwww World Heavyweight Champion ... Chris Benoit!" Great ending. Although I'm not sure how to feel about this one ... it's like one of those Masters years where someone like Hal Sutton wins the title. You're happy for him, but at the same time, it's Hal Sutton. " That's going in the sig.

The WWE hasn't done a good job presenting Guerrero's "evolution" or Benoits "struggle"; so can you blame him? He wouldn't know that, though. When he last watched, Eddie was in rehab, and Benoit was injured. I'll give him credit for admitting as much, though. I hope people take this as what I believe it is: A sarcastic, semi-light-hearted jab at the event from a now-casual fan, rather than a scathing assault from a wrestling authority. Guest Mosaicv2 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 WAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!! I think Simmons did one hell of a review... sure, the Benoit & Guerrero comments were unnecessary... but the rest of it was smooth. Come on, deal with you.
King Cucaracha 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 Was he positive about anything? Seriously...it wasn't that bad of a review, but I'd probably have been more likely to have given a shit about it if he bothered to do some research.
Kurt Angle Mark 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 Whatever you think of his review, I got give the man credit for fixing all the mistakes the article had when first posted. Guest Dids Report post Posted March 15, 2004 A- Simmons is an much more skilled writer than anybody on this site. B- He's not a smark. He hasn't watched wrestling. C- Keeping B in mind, a lot of his comments (re:Austin for example) are dead on. D- A great deal of posters in this folder need to care less about stuff. I think it's a very accurate read on how the casual fan views the WWE and the mistakes they made in building to this event. Chris Benoit is an amazing wrestler and I think his win is really fucking cool, but to most folks- he's Hal Sutton. That's not his fault, it's the WWE creative team that booked him as "that other guy" in a fued between two of their biggest names. My only fault was his dissing of Stacy, athough her non-bimbo esque good looks do kinda make her look out of place with all that silcone.
CheesalaIsGood 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 Anyone surprised that a mainstrean sports journalist would wanna slag wrestling? Boy, he sure does seem "edgy" and "in the know" about it all being "scripted" and "fake". Fuck Bill Simmons. Fuck ESPN. Fuck football and all other "real sports". They have no respect. Nothing would make me happier than to hear the news that the Sports Gal has fallen down a flight of steps. Word.

CheesalaIsGood 0 Report post Posted March 16, 2004 Maybe he IS a Rasslin' fan. Guest Bottled Black Report post Posted March 16, 2004 I thought it was a well-written entertaining article. He made a few mistakes big deal. He was simply stating his opinion of the show. You can't judge a guys credibility because he made a mistake about which WrestleMania Austin beat Michaels.
