PLAGIARISM! Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 Not enough good bands come to my area (England) for me to need to just yet. Maybe if I was the drummer at a show or something. Mind you, I think my hearing has deteriorated in the past couple of years.
Youth N Asia Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 And YNA: you're alone in this Squirtle Everyone's loss but mine, man. It's not a forgone conclusion that you'll go deaf. I know more people who go to concerts without plugs with perfect hearing then...well, I don't know anyone with hearing loss over it
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 I don't figure I'll live long enough to really feel the burn of long-term hearing damage anyway.
Kinetic Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 Wearing earplugs really wouldn't be consistent with my decadent rock and roll image. And the sound at local shows is generally so shitty that it's really not a factor.
DokDoyle Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 Depends on the show I go to. I went to see Great Big Sea a while ago and didn't wear any while standing at front row stage right (and spent the next couple of days deaf). Then a few weeks ago went to see Nickleback/Three Days Grace/The trews and I don't think I'd make it through the show with out them

What about the Barenaked Ladies?

Anyway, I don't wear the earplugs. What's the fun in seeing Henry Rollins if you do it in a safe, orderly fashion? Don't stand next to the speakers, though. If there is a shitty hardcore band opening, the snare will make your ears bleed. K.
Rendclaw Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 I've always worn plugs at concerts, unless I pull a stupid and forget to bring/buy them. I have always said that I didn't want to end up like Pete Townshend. I have always had sensitive hearing and if I am going to go to a concert where the decibels are going to be over 80, you can be damned sure I am going to wear them. Call me a pussy if you feel the need, but I like to preserve my abilities for as long as humanly possible. And AoO, if you honestly think you're not going to live to or past a certain age, unless you're doing some really fucked up shit, you're going to make it whether you want to or not, so plan accordingly, bro.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 hope I die before I get old..dun dun dun dun Dun Dun Dun Dun....
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 Keith Moon never wore earplugs and he turned out fine.
Jobber of the Week Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 I think I have really sensitive ears. As do I. Which is why I wind up wearing earplugs in more and more places. Concerts, wrestling shows (although the big stadium shows are better because the sound is less loud if you're sitting far away), movies (been wearing them here for years), even various rides at Disneyland are a lot louder than they are in 1994, something I confirmed with other visitors, and I remember in my last trip reminding myself to bring plugs next time.
converge241 Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 ive been to thousands of shows never wore earplugs and will be 28 next month and can confirm i am feeling the effects of that choice to be earplug free you really sure wear them at almost all shows but i never could stop myself from basking in the sound fully..in fact aside from being an "old fogey" the whole no earplug thing is something that stops me from going to shows.. as in i limit myself because i know i wont want to wear them every time i go
nl5xsk1 Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 The choices are bullshit, and are age-biased. (kidding) I'm already 29, and have never worn earplugs to shows, with minimal hearing loss (I say minimal because there is some, but not enough to complain about.) And I've been into the punk/hardcore/Oi scene since I was in middle school, so I've certainly seen my share of loud shows. I think people fuck over their hearing more by blaring their music in their cars or rooms. If I see 3 or 5 shows a month, regardless of how loud they are, it's only 10 or so hours of loud music. Add countless hours of loud music in every day living, and then is when you fuck over your hearing.
