Guest Real F'n Show

Ok, here's the deal: I got a bunch of great matches to review, some from TV, some from PPV. Most are really great matches that are overlooked or whatever. So I'll give you guys 2 choices of what match you want me to review and you guys pick which one. Sound familiar? I'll try to stay away from matches that CM Funk reviews, and go with the more underrated or less talked about matches. So first up...

1.) Team Angle vs. Eddie Guerrero and Yoshihiro Tajiri © for the Smackdown Tag Team Titles (Smackdown 5/22/03)

or

2.) The Hardy Boyz vs. Edge and Christian for the number one contendership to the WWF Tag Team Titles (No Way Out 2000)

Here's this week's review. Next week's choices are at the bottom, feedback appreciated:

The Match: The Hardy Boyz w/Terri Runnels vs. Edge and Christian

The Event: WWF No Way Out 2000 (2-27-00)

The Stipulations: The winner of this match would become the number one contender to the tag team titles at WM 2000. The Dudleyz defeated the New Age Outlaws earlier in the night.

Terri has hired the APA apparently on Sunday Night Heat to protect the Hardyz from the Dudleyz. Edge attacks Jeff to start and Jeff misses a corkscrew moonsault off the top right away. Edge tags Christian who tries to give Jeff a back body drop but Jeff lands on his feet and nails a dropkick, before tagging in Matt. The Hardyz hit the second rope legdrop/legdrop to groin combo on Christian. They then take off their shirts as all the 13 year old boys in the audience scream like girls. Matt drops Christian across the top rope and right into a back suplex for 2. They exchange some chops, which Christian gets the better of. He chops Jeff off the apron for good measure and then dropkicks Matt. Jeff gets back into the ring and Christian dropkicks Jeff back out. Matt throws Christian outside as Jeff slams him back-first into the barrier and then back in again.

Matt tags in Jeff as they nail Christian with Poetry in Motion, followed by a clothesline from Matt. Jeff covers for 2. Jeff pulls Christian up and slams him down. He goes to the apron before slingshotting in with an arabian press that hits nothing but Christian’s knees. He gets a 2 count anyway. Tag to Matt as the Hardyz hit the double back suplex into a front pancake from the Smackdown games on Christian. Matt covers for another 2. Matt lifts Christian up for the Black Tiger Bomb (sit-out Outsider’s Edge) but Christian falls out and hits a neckbreaker. Both men are down and makes the tag to Jeff as he comes off the top but gets booted by Christian. Christian tags in Edge who hits both Hardyz with clotheslines. He nails a back body drop on Jeff and a spinning heel kick on Matt knocking him out of the ring. Christian then follows with his from the inside second rope plancha to the outside onto Matt as Edge flapjacks Jeff into the corner in the ring. Christian yanks Jeff down across the top rope, into a schoolboy by Edge for 2.

Edge then hits 4 corner punches on Jeff. WTF? Who hits just 4 corner punches? Apparently Edge I guess. Tag to Christian as Jeff runs off the ropes and tries a body scissors but Christian counters with a nice face-first powerbomb. Tag to Edge as E and C beatdown Jeff in their corner. With Jeff sitting in the corner, Christian drop toeholds Edge into a headbutt to Jeff’s groin. Nice double team. Edge covers but only gets 2. Edge applies a dragon sleeper but Jeff fights out and runs off the ropes. Edge stops him but Jeff gets a double leg takedown into a jacknife hold. Edge bridges up and spins around, trying a backslide, but Jeff backflips over him, but Edge catches him and piledrives him to the mat. Nice sequence.

Cover gets 2 for Edge. Sleeper, but Jeff fights out and gets a fuckedupcanrana, landing on his head. He tries another one but Edge counters with a huge sit-out powerbomb! He tags in Christian who snapmares Jeff and kicks him in the back. Irish whip leads to a powerslam from Christian for 2. He tags in Edge who applies yet another resthold. In a tag match. Jeff fights out again and both men run off the ropes, resulting in a double swinging hairgrab takedown. Okay.

Double KO spot and Christian comes in without a tag to stomp on Jeff. While the ref is restraining him, Matt comes off the top with an elbow on Edge. Jeff covers for 2. Jeff lunges for a tag but Edge counters with a spinebuster. He heads up top but gets dropkicked on the way down by Jeff. Both men crawling, and a double tag. Matt slams Christian and gets a swinging neckbreaker on Edge. Sleeper drop on Christian gets 2. Matt lifts Edge up for an electric chair as Jeff comes off the top with a crossbody, but misses Edge who has now victory rolled Matt while Jeff nails Christian with the crossbody. Whew. Double cover with Jeff pinning Christian as Edge pins Matt for 2. That made no sense, as Matt and Christian were legal. Oh well, nice spot.

Edge gets thrown outside as the Hardyz climb opposite turnbuckles and Matt hits Christian with a legdrop as Jeff hits him with a splash at the same time (sorta). Matt with the cover but Edge breaks up the pin. Matt and Jeff try Poetry in Motion again, this time on Edge, but as Jeff leaps off Matt’s back, Edge jumps to the second rope and takes him out with a spear in mid-air! Sweet. Somehow Matt doesn’t notice, even though his brother almost landed on him. Edge charges, but Matt moves out of the way and nails the Twist of Fate. Christian tries the falling reverse DDT on Matt, but he is able to reverse into an inverted atomic drop as Jeff heads up top.

Terri hops up on the apron doing the Hardy Boyz sign thingy, but shoves Jeff off the top to the outside and into the barricade. Matt’s all like “What was that all about Terri? You got some splainin’ ta do!” He tries a Twist of Fate on Christian but Christian shoves him off. Matt almost collides with Terri, but stops himself, only to be slapped. Actually the slap didn’t even hit. Christian then comes up behind Matt and nails the Unprettier for the 3 count in 15:04.

Terri tries to celebrate with E and C after the match, but they’re all like “What the hell is she doing?” and they leave. Matt grabs Terri by the hair but the APA jump them. Bradshaw nails Matt with a short-arm clothesline and Faarooq drops Jeff on his head with a fucking SICK Dominator.

This match kicked ass. It didn’t touch the ladder match, but nobody was expecting it to. Great action here, with some innovative spots and only a few blown ones. ***1/2 from me.

This of course resulted in the Triangle Ladder Match at WM 16 between the Dudleyz, Hardyz, and E and C. I might end up reviewing that match later on.

I vote for Malenko vs Benoit - that was the one with the idiot crowd, right?

I do believe it was. I haven't seen it myself, but I heard Malenko and Benoit put on a pure wrestling classic while the crowd chanted "boring" the entire time.

Yeah they went to a draw and when it was announced that there would be 5 more minutes added, they booed. There was also a shitty finish, but the match itself was gold.

Eh, who wants to wait until next week anyway? I'm not doing anything special now, so why not...

The Match: Dean Malenko vs. Chris Benoit

The Event: WCW Hog Wild 1996

The Place: Sturgis, North Carolina

The Stipulations: none

I'm not really familiar with the backstory here, as I didn’t watch WCW back in ‘96. In fact, I had just started watching the WWF in 1995, and didn’t start watching WCW until late ‘97. Anyway, apparently Malenko is the Dungeon of Doom’s hitman in this match, supposedly trying to take Benoit out.

Benoit gets the advantage early and uses a kneelift, but Malenko fights back and does a beatdown in the corner. He gets a suplex for 2. He follows that up with a nice neckbreaker and an elbow for two, before applying a chinlock on Benoit. Benoit fights back with some choking and a standing legdrop for 1. Speaking of which, 1 counts are underrated in my opinion, there’s just not enough of them besides hosses using them against smaller opponents. Wrestling fans have been trained too much not to expect a 1 count anymore.

Back to the match, as Benoit nails Malenko and they go into an awesome reversal sequence. Malenko gets an armlock out of it all. Benoit fights out and an elbow gets 2. So does a snap suplex. Abdominal stretch by Benoit and Malenko escapes but they collide when both try crossbodies. Benoit charges and misses, but gets another snap suplex. He heads up top and nails the headbutt! 2 count only. Benoit tries to tombstone Malenko, but Malenko reverses it for 2. And another 2. And another as he keeps pinning to no avail. He tries the Texas Cloverleaf, but Benoit reverses to a pinning predicament for 2.

They fight outside of the ring and Malenko gains the advantage. Back in, he heads up top, but Benoit crotches him and gives him a beautiful superplex for another 2 count. Malenko fights back with a fucking SICK german, landing Benoit on his head. Ouchies. Benoit gets a pair of two counts off a small package and a clothesline, but Malenko gets his own for a 2 count. Belly to belly gets 2 for Malenko and Benoit gets 2 off of a nice northern lights suplex with a bridge. German suplex, bridged for yet another 2, but the crowd is fucking dead. Benoit locks on the Walls of Jericho/Liontamer, but Malenko gets to the ropes. Here’s an interesting fact: Benoit actually invented the Liontamer, but let Chris Jericho use it because Malenko invented the Crossface for Benoit.

Back to the action, as Benoit takes Malenko out with a pescado and a pin back in the ring gets 2. Dean gets a pin of his own for 2 and they fight over a backslide. Malenko eventually gets it for, ahem, 2. Another rollup gets 2 for Malenko. Benoit now gets a 2 count. Jesus Christ, there’s so many near falls. This is nuts! And the crowd doesn’t give a shit. God I hate rednecks. Benoit drills Malenko, almost through the fucking mat with a powerbomb. He heads to the top again, and gets superplexed back down. Malenko gets an Oklahoma roll for 2 and a powerbomb for yet another 2. And then the 20 minute time limit expires.

I needed a breather. We get another 5 minutes added, and the bikers start to boo. Did I mention how much I hate rednecks? I feel bad for Malenko and Benoit, in there having one of the best matches of there careers at this point, and getting no damn respect at all from these “fans.”

We resume as Benoit gets a back suplex for 2. Tilt-a-whirl backbreaker also gets two, and now Benoit locks Malenko in his own finishing move, the Cloverleaf. Malenko is all “No way in hell I’m tapping to my own move, man” and he gets to the ropes. Enziguri by Malenko but they collide and Benoit goes back on offense by working over Dean’s knee. He locks on a kneebar as the 5 minutes nears it's end. Dean escapes and rolls Benoit up but the overtime expires. Another overtime is given, and the crowd boos again. Seriously, give me a gun.

Dean gives Benoit a nice dragon screw but Benoit fights back and kills Malenko with a dragon suplex bridge for a close 2. The first time watching I bought that as the finish. Benoit gets another rollup for 2 but whiffs on a dropkick. Malenko’s then all like “This is how it’s done” and locks Benoit in the Cloverleaf. Benoit nears the ropes, so Malenko changes to an STF. Sweet. Please come out of retirement Deano, at least for one more match against Benoit or Eddie. Please! Woman interferes and Benoit rolls Malenko up for 3? Dammit, I want more! Match time was 28:13.

Holy shit, can Malenko and Benoit rock the mat. This match kicked all kinds of ass, but I have two MAJOR complaints. First off, is the crowd. Fuck them. Secondly, was the bad finish. Without the awful crowd or interference, we’re looking at a ****3/4 or possibly even ***** match. As it stands, I’ll give it ****1/4, but it’s not Malenko’s or Benoit’s fault. Definately check this match out, or just find the show somewhere. Along with this match, it has a nice ***1/2 Ultimo Dragon/Rey Misterio Jr. match, and Eddie vs. Flair in a ***3/4 encounter. The rest is crap, but these 3 matches are worth it if you can find the show relatively cheap.

I haven't seen it since 2000, but I remember enjoying the match an awful lot back then.

I'd like reviews for both

I guess I can do both for you guys, since both matches are relatively short:

The Match: Essa Rios w/Lita vs. Eddie Guerrero w/Chyna

The Event: WWF Backlash 2000 (4-30-00)

The Place: Washington, D.C.

The Stipulations: Guerrero’s European Title is on the line

Eddie and Chyna arrive in his SWANK ‘57 Chevy, complete with tuxedo and prom dress from Eddie’s prom, and are told that if Eddie doesn’t defend his title right now, he’ll be stripped of it. So they proceed to drive down the entrance way, and Eddie gets his elbow pad from his trunk. Looks like he’ll be wrestling in his tuxedo pants, and BOWTIE. Awesome.

Eddie dropkicks him to start, and they get a short little reversal sequence, ending with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker from Rios. Eddie fights back and nails a back suplex. Eddie works the arm and gets a one count, but Rios fights back to his feet. He tries the rope bounce armdrag, but blows the spot, so he settles for a regular armdrag, sending Guerrero out of the ring.

Essa tries to follow with a plancha, but Eddie side-steps it, and Rios splats on the floor. Eddie then throws him head-first into the stairs, before rolling him back in. Slam sets up the slingshot senton, and Guerrero throws him out again. Chyna nails Rios on the outside with a forearm and throws him back in. Eddie tries an irish whip, but Rios reverses and nails him with a nice dropkick. He follows up with a missile dropkick from the top for 2. Rios locks on a sleeper, but Eddie fights out with a modified jawbreaker. He tries a powerbomb, but Rios counters with a sweet armdrag. Rope-running sequence leads to Rios monkey flipping Eddie across the ring, with Eddie getting folded in half after landing in the ropes and almost landing on his head. Ouch.

Rios tries to capitalize, but gets armdragged out of the ring by Eddie. Eddie follows him out with a plancha after Rios takes another forearm from Chyna. Guerrero sets Essa up for a powerbomb on the floor, as Lita climbs to the top rope. Chyna pushes her off, however, and into the Spanish announce table. The distraction leads to Rios back body dropping Guerrero on the floor, and nailing one of the best asai moonsaults this side of Hayabusa on Guerrero, slamming his knees on the American announce table on the way down. Holy shit.

Rios rolls Eddie back in and connects with another missile dropkick from the top, sending Eddie out on the other side. He then follows with an over the corner post somersault plancha. Holy shit #2. This guy is amazing, the WWE should bring him back for the cruiserweight division, although he was a little out of shape the last time I saw him on TNA. Back in again, as Rios heads back up top, but gets crotched by Chyna. Eddie follows with a superplex, but Rios gets an arm on him for a close 2. Eddie flips out of a back suplex attempt and nails the brainbuster. He heads to the top rope, but Essa runs up the ropes and armdrags him off the top. Gorgeous moonsault by Rios hits knees, and Eddie finishes with a Gory Special airplane spin into a neckbreaker at 8:44.

Great match here, with Eddie controlling and Rios bringing the AWESOME highspots. The blown spot didn’t really hurt the match much, as Rios didn’t repeat the spot. More time would have been nice, but this was probably the best they could do with 9 minutes. ***3/4

After the match, Rios attacks Eddie and Lita strips Chyna down to a baby blue bra and thong. Eddie likes, and Chyna doesn't really seem to care as she shows herself off.

The Match: Perry Saturn vs. Dean Malenko vs. Eddie Guerrero w/Chyna

The Event: WWF Judgment Day 2000 (5-21-00)

The Place: Louisville, Kentucky

The Stipulations: Guerrero’s European Title is on the line

Malenko and Saturn double team quickly and shake hands, as we get the cool Demolition backbreaker/kneedrop combo from them on Eddie. The alliance between them quickly ends however, as Saturn clotheslines Dean and flapjacks him. Press slam on Eddie from Saturn, but Eddie reverses a double team and hits double low-blows on his opponents. Springboard hurricanrana to Malenko and then one for Saturn. Eddie tries for a flying headscissors on Malenko but Malenko counters with a huge sideslam for a two count.

Eddie and Saturn go now as Eddie gets a nice tornado DDT for 2. Malenko drills Eddie into the mat with a ligerbomb and covers for 2. They go into an awesome reversal sequence, as Malenko gets a double underhook suplex and tries another powerbomb, only for Eddie to counter with a sunset flip, but Malenko rolls through and locks Eddie in the Texas Cloverleaf. Great sequence there. Saturn breaks up the submission move but Eddie and Deano fight him off, before heading up top. Saturn comes up behind Eddie and drops him on the top rope, before climbing up himself with Malenko to try a superplex. Malenko then pushes HIM off, and now Eddie climbs back up, looking for a frankensteiner, but Dean fights him off too and nails Guerrero with my favorite move in the whole wide world, the top rope gutbuster!

The cover is broken up by Saturn who throws Dean out and frogsplashes Eddie. That earns him a two count, as Dean re-enters the ring, only to be locked in his own move, the Texas Cloverleaf, by Saturn. Eddie breaks that up with a brainbuster and Dean locks Saturn in the Rings of Saturn in an awesome finisher trading sequence.

Eddie breaks up the Rings of Saturn and Saturn ends up outside, leaving Guerrero and Malenko in the ring. Dean gets a suplex on Eddie and a top rope elbow drop for two as Saturn comes back in and we get a slightly contrived three-way spot as Dean suplexes Eddie while being german suplexed by Saturn. Still fucking awesome. Chyna nails Saturn with the European Title on the outside. Malenko gets tripped up by Chyna too, and nailed with some roses, which are loaded a lead pipe. Guerrero then follows with an Oklahoma roll on Malenko for the victory in 7:59. Damn it was just getting awesome too and then it ended.

Much like Rios vs. Guerrero, this match was way too short, but also like the Rios vs. Guerrero match, they did the best they possibly could with the time given. Some innovative double teams and three-way spots in this one, and no noticeable blown spots. I’ll give it ***3/4.

And I'm back.

The Match: Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio

The Event: WWE Smackdown 9-26-02

The Place: San Diego, California

The Stipulations: none

Angle and Benoit do some trash talking as Mysterio makes his entrance. Mysterio tries to intervene, but Angle shoves him down and punches Benoit. Mysterio comes back and gives Angle a flying headscissors takedown. Benoit irish whips Mysterio into Angle and Rey tries a hurricanrana, but Angle pushes him off causing Mysterio to backflip to his feet. right into Benoit’s waistlock. Benoit tries a back suplex on Mysterio but Mysterio kicks a charging Angle in the face and bulldogs Benoit out of the back suplex for a 2 count, and I’m out of breath already.

Kurt throws Mysterio out of the ring, and does a nice amateur wrestling sequence with Benoit. Mysterio tries to re-enter the ring, but Angle knocks him off the apron. They do another wrestling sequence, and this time Benoit knocks Mysterio off the apron. Angle shoots in with a double leg takedown and he tries the anklelock, but Benoit won’t go over. Benoit fights out and Angle tries to pin him with his feet on the ropes, but it only gets 2. Mysterio back up on the apron now, slingshotting over Angle into a spinning heel kick on Benoit. Whip sequence leads to Angle and Benoit almost colliding, and Mysterio rolls up Benoit for another 2 count. Angle whips Mysterio into the corner and charges him, but Mysterio moves out of the way and Angle’s shoulder hits the post. Mysterio backs right into a sweet Benoit back suplex however, and a back elbow gets 2 for Benoit. Inverted atomic drop from Benoit, followed by a chop and a snap suplex for 2. Benoit locks Mysterio in a neck wrench and picks him up in the air, before tossing him out of the ring, as Mysterio splats on the floor.

Angle back in the ring now, as he punches and stomps Benoit in the corner. Short arm clothesline gets 2 for Angle. Benoit fights back and unleashes some TOOTHLESS AGGRESSION by chopping the hell out of Angle. After 5 or so chops, Benoit off the ropes, but he runs into an overhead belly to belly from Angle. Cover, but Benoit gets his foot on the bottom rope. Benoit with a knockdown and he fires off the rolling germans, but only gets 2 as Angle gets the go-behind. Angle gets 2 of his own as Benoit escapes, but walks into an Angle slam! Angle taunts, giving Mysterio the chance to springboard in with a dropkick, knocking Angle out of the ring. He covers Benoit for a close nearfall. Benoit whips Rey into the ropes and Angle trips him up, before pulling him out of the ring. Angle and Benoit go again, and Benoit gets the fucking AWESOME release overhead german, flipping Angle facefirst onto the mat! I love that. Benoit signals for the headbutt, but Mysterio takes him out with a missile dropkick from the top, sending Benoit to the outside. Angle whips Mysterio and tries to throw him up into the air, but Mysterio takes Benoit out on the outside with a BUTT splash! Angle rolls out and throws Rey hard into the barricade.

Back in the ring with Benoit and Angle, and Kurt with the chopblock on Benoit. He locks on the anklelock, but Benoit gets to the ropes. Angle won’t let go, so Mysterio takes out both Angle AND Benoit with a double 619! Benoit and Angle get to their feet and Mysterio tries the West Coast Pop on Angle, but Angle counters, so Mysterio takes him over with a sunset flip for another close nearfall. Angle and Mysterio back up and Mysterio gets DECAPITATED by a clothesline from Kurt. Kurt turns around only to get locked in the Crossface! Angle tries to counter out but Benoit rolls though and Angle ends up still in the Crossface, only now in the middle of the ring. Angle’s about to tap, but Mysterio springboards in with a legdrop to Benoit while he has Angle in the Crossface! Nice. He covers Benoit for yet another close 2 count, with Angle saving. All three men back up, and Mysterio dropkicks Angle right into Benoit, who back suplexes him over the top rope. Rey charges Benoit and Benoit throws him up into the air, but Mysterio lands on the middle rope and comes off with a ‘rana on Benoit for the 3 count in 8:41! Great finish there.

Great match here, but this match was much too short. They easily could have went another 10 minutes with this, but you take what you get I guess. Great storyline here with Angle and Benoit feuding and Rey trying to get the upset in his hometown. Some of the timing seemed to be a little off, but it didn’t really hurt the overall flow of the match. ***3/4

Up Next: More 3-way goodness
