How long have you watched wrestling?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure threads like this have been on here many times before, but screw it.

I'm interested in seeing the diversity as far as when everyone started regularly watching wrestling and what hooked them, if anything, and made them continue to watch.

i remeber watching wrestling since the early 90's, like 91-92, but was never really "hooked", i knew i like it but i was just a little kid and didn't pay much attention.

i think what really got me into it was Bret Hart in 94, i just loved the guy he was kinda like a superhero and when he and Lex won the Rumble, i remember really marking out when the two got to the end and met in the middle of the ring back to back, that was cool!

And the final thing that really made me a fan was Wrestlemania 10 that same year. The Ladder match just bleeeew me away completely and made me a HBK fan from then on. Bret winning the title at the was awesome too.

I always knew it was around but never actively tried to find wrestling on the tube. Then, one Saturday morning in January of 1989 (I was 6), I flipped to Superstars and saw Honky Tonk clobber Bret Hart with his guitar. I believe the Rockers were also wrestling on that ep. I checked the TV Guide to see when it comes on and was hooked.

Plus, just a couple weeks later the famous Main Event aired on NBC one Friday night with The Mega Powers splitting up.

Damn, I feel like the newbie here.

I watched WWF casually in late 98 at a friends house, but didn't pay much attention to it. Then I remember going over to his house every Monday night and we'd watch wrestling in early 99. I remember rolling my eyes at first, but then I started to get into it. The Rock was so cool, Mankind was awesome, there was HHH and Austin. We'd watch some WCW too, and I liked that two rival shows were on the same night. The buildup for WM15 and the Austin/Rock match hooked me, and when I get hooked on something I get _hooked_ on something. I've gone from a total know-nothing mark in early 99 to having seen almost every WWF and WCW show there is (though I haven't seen a lot of the NWA) and becoming a smark. That's probably why I love the old school board so much, because there's so much little stuff I don't know much about.

Watched it off and on since 91/92. The match that essentially got me "hooked" was Bret Hart vs Roddy Piper from WM8 and Savage vs Flair from WM 8 along with Chris Benoit vs 2 Cold Scorpio at Superbrawl III. Those 3 I thought were amazing(even at the time I was a bigger fan of good matches/workers) so that's what really hooked me in.

I was always interested in watching wrestling ever since I first heard of it. Then in the fall of 1993 a tv channel here in Sweden started showing the WWF regularly until after the Royal Rumble of 1994, after which they switched to WCW as former Swedish amateur wrestling great Frank Andersson signed with WCW. They then stopped showing WCW in early 1996, but then british TNT started showing Nitro, which they kept doing until right about after the Fingerpoke of Doom. Since then I've had to rely on RecordTV (while it was around), tapes and downloading stuff off the Internet to get my wrestling fix.

Quick and Simple:

Summer of 1988 (Yes, I remember seeing the SSeries 88 PPV when I was a tad over 4) and Hulk Hogan was my hook.

Started watching somewhere between WM7 and SS91 when my friend brought over a tape of WM6. Hogan/Warrior hooked me for good and I started watching the TV episodes immediately afterwards.

That matc gets shit on too much by people I know. Besides the horrible finish it's a very good match with INTENSE~! brawling.

My cousin rented WrestleMania IX when it came out on video and we watched it at my place...I liked it

Then, King of the Ring was gonna be on PPV soon and it had the Hogan vs. Yoko rematch which I just had to see...then I was hooked

As a little kid in the early 90's, I watched every so often. I was NEVER a Hogan fan, ever. I never really hated him, but the appeal was never there for me. I remember liking Bret Hart, Mr. Perfect, Undertaker, Savage, and years later, Tatanka. By 1992, I started to pay attention to the stories and actually know when a PPV was happening. I started to lose interest in mid-1996, but by 1997, I was totally hooked again by the Bret-Austin feud.

Must have been that Taker/Giant Gonzalez match that hooked ya. :P

No, but I've always liked WM9 (one of the few) and _love_ KOTR93, so I know where you're coming from.

Since 1987, brother! It was Wrestlemania III when Hogan bodyslammed Andre the Giant when I was a wee lad is what got me and I've been hooked ever since. Sure people hate Hogan, but if it wasn't for him I would have never been a wrestling fan.

SNME in March 1988. My hook was Randy Savage & Ted Dibiase, especially when they were in the finals of the Wrestlemania IV tournament a couple of weeks later (as of airdate, not when it was taped).

I'm not exactly sure right when I started watching, because my brother got me hooked at a pretty young age. The first time I remember the actual storylines was about WM 9. So going on that, I started watching with great interest when I was about 6ish.

I can't say one thing ever hooked me to pro wrestling. I used to watch it in the 80's but I only followed it like a little kid could. But at about 10 years old(1990) I started watching all the shows, collecting all the toys, reading every wrestling magazine I could get my hands on etc. Ever since 1990, I've been a avid fan ever since.....

The first wrestling I saw was actually a live show. My Dad took me to a wrestling show in Tijuana when I was 8. That was back in 1987. Ever since then I was hooked on wrestling. I began watching Lucha Libre, the old NWA, and then WWF. It's funny that so many people here credit Hogan for hooking them on wrestling. When I was a kid I couldn't stand him. If anything he kept me away from really getting into the WWF at the time.

I watched off and on before I moved from Toronto, so I would have been around 6 or so, but I never really got hooked until late '92. I can remember the build-up to the Survivor Series that year, with the Warrior leaving and Perfect turning face. It must have been right after Bret beat Flair for the belt, and I can also remember watching Superstars and them hyping the SNME where HBK beat Bulldog for the IC title and Bret fought Papa Shango.

Then I stopped watching sometime in '95, I think. It must have been during Diesel's run as champ and didn't start watching again until around WrestleMania XIV.

I don't think anyone can blame you for that. Definitely WWF's finest years.

I first started watching it in 1990, I only watched PPVs and after going to Summerslam 92 I stopped watching because my parents had cable took out and didn't get back into wrestling until the Summer of 94 and when the UK was able to get Nitro on TV I became a fanatic even though we had no WCW Pay Per View events and we didn't get the In Your House ppvs until April 97.

Here's a question to those who live in the Uk, what programs were shown in the early 90s? I know we had the ppvs and we must have had one of the weekend shows or the WWF wouldn't have toured here in 92.

I first started watching when I was 7 back in 1990. I went over my cousins house and watched Royal Rumble 1990. After that I was hooked. My favourite wrestler was Hulk Hogan. I wacthed it soild until about 1993 when I cooled off a bit, watched it a bit in 1994 before finally getting right back into it in 1995 with Summerslam.

Well...

Back in 1991 the schedule for the WWF in the UK was as follows:

TUESDAYS:

WWF Superstars on Eurosport

FRIDAYS:

WWF Prime Time Wrestling on Eurosport

WWF Wrestling Challenge on Sky One

SATURDAYS:

WWF Wrestling Challenge on Sky One

WWF Superstars on Sky One

SUNDAYS:

WWF Superstars on Sky One

Sky One also showed Saturday Night's Main Event and Sky Movies showed all the PPV's and UK events.

Hope that helps. :)

I never stopped watching. But I don't seem to remember much from 93-94. I don't think I watched as much then.

And I use to beat my brother silly while watching Superstars.

Thanks for the info, I never knew that we got Saturday Night's Main Event.

Got in around the birth of Hulkamania time, although I found the rougher NWA to be more appealing as a youth. Watched with great devotion for several years with the largest missed gap being maybe a month here or there. This went on until the blackout spring/summer of '99, when I moved out of my folks' place and lacked cable + net access (I missed the Owen Hart death and tribute because of this), then moved to outside Minneapolis and got back into it again, just barely missing being able to go to SS'99 (though I did go to two Nitros at the Target Center). From there I watched with devotion again until the death of WCW and subsequent Invasion.

I stomached the Invasion for as long as smarkly possible, but after 9-11 and the nonsensical Kurt Angle sympathy title win (when he should've gone over in the amazing SS match) I quit watching from then until late '02, when I caught the surging SD6 and got back into it again for a couple months, but alas the crap eventually rose to the top (see: Mr. America and all-HHH-all-the-time) and I stopped watching yet again

From last August to WM, I watched only one RAW (the pre-New Years with awesome HHH-HBK match). I did get the chance to see WM, but after the post-WM RAW and lottery from last week, my WM smark-erection subsided to flaccidity once again

Who knows what the future may hold though

My brother was a big fan, and he used to babysit me when I was young, so I've been watching it since like 2 or 3. I didn't really get hooked until 91 though, when I tuned into an episode of Prime Time Wrestling shortly before WM7.
