TOAO Walking Tall thread

Recommended Posts

I just got back from a Walking Tall free preview, and here's a quick analysis:

The short version: 6/10, about 75 min (yes, 1 hour 15 minutes. I think a Disney movie is longer)

The long(er) version (SPOILERS coming up. Don't look if you don't wanna know):

Remember how everything seemed to fall in place with The Rundown? Well, it doesn't seem to do so here. Let's start with the villain(s). Neal McDonough's Jay Hamilton can be described as such - he's rich, therefore he's evil. He of course owns the major industry in the town, has the police in his back pocket and oh by the way, runs a drug ring.

Now for the hero. The Rock's Chris Vaughn is an honourably discharged special forces officer who (after finding corruption at the casino, getting beaten up and left for dead, finding out his nephew got drugs from the casino, wrecking the casino and getting acquitted in possibly the most inane movie trial EVER) becomes Sheriff and decides to ruin Rich Bad Guy's life by getting rid of the corruption.

This of course, happens in the first 50-55 minutes. The next 5 minutes involve him abusing his power and shagging Ashley Scott (whose role as Danny (hmm) amounts to looking good in a bra, and she does it very well), before the final bit where they blow up stuff and wreck a lot of property.

Johnny Knoxville is, well, Johnny Knoxville. I've really no complaints there - you know what you're getting.

There's a lot of little things that really don't get followed up in this film, which can probably be attributed to the length. Stuff like a ferry sinking - implying that no help is coming soon, but never said. Or why the Sheriff previous dies, etc.

Anyways, it's a fun little movie, but in the end it's not particularly memorable. I'd recommend giving it a pass and waiting for video.

I'll be going to see it tomorrow morning.

My only beef with the movie is the running time. 75 minutes ? I've seen movies on the Disney Channel longer than that. I did hear that they cut 25 minutes of the movie because they wanted the PG-13 rating. I assume those 25 minutes will be on the DVD.

As I said in the other thread: Not a great film, and it focuses very little on detail, and is basicly your tpyical mindless fun action movie. The Rock was good, but the direction and script seemed really weak. I just couldn't get into it as much as I wanted to because of the little detail, but for what it is - a little action flick, it was fine and fun.

This was my exact problem with Rundown. I expect a little more for my buck than just Rock's swagger to justify my money going to the box office. Walking tall actually seems even dumber than Rundown. The only good thing about Rundown was you saw Rock's potential, but that is not enough to even justify a matinee dollar out of me.

Again, I don't think Rock's movies are very good, IMO.

I haven't seen The Rundown, was waiting for the DVD, which I'll pickup soon.

I think the Rock can act, and he's fairly good, but hasn't really gotten to expand other than some action guy. He's gotten 3 new movies roles, and two of them are really good, IMO. One based on the video game Spy Hunter, not sure how big of a role he plays in that tho. The other is the sequel to Get Shorty, which he plays a gay singer trying to get big.

Should be interesting. I don't think it's his acting that hurts the films, it's just the scripts that he has chosen.

The main problem with "The Rundown" was that waste of space Sean William Scott. The guy isn't funny and makes Freddie Prinze Jr seem talented.

I'll go see this as thankfully no SWS within miles of the project.

It was a good movie, in my opinion. Considering I saw it back to back with the boring piece of bland trash that was Hellboy, it made the movie look even better.

Well, just got back from it, it was a little short for my taste, but I liked it. I hope they added those supposed more violent scenes that were cut out to keep the PG-13 rating back in for the DVD version. And its a good thing they changed the character's name (the real life name of the sheriff the movie was basedon) of Buford Pusser to Chris Vaughn. HHH would have had a field day with that one.

Oh and they did an amazing job with covering up the tattoo (make-up? Computer?), its like he never got it.

Looks like it's going to make 15 million for the weekend so the Rock stays consistent with crappy scripts.

I wanted to see it this weekend but I got a damn cold and will be missing it. Luckily nothing really comes out next weekend.

Actually, the character of Elliott is a gay ACTOR trying to break into the business. Christina Milian is the singer that's trying to break into the business.

Interesting side note: I read somewhere that Elmore Leonard was thinking of Rocky when he wrote the character (hey, read the book), so it's kinda ironic that Rocky actually ends up playing him.

Anyways, Be Cool will probably be Rock's big "breakthrough" role, as it really doesn't call for him to do a lot of action, and it's definitely a twist on his usual character.

Oh, my bad. I read "Singer" on some message board. Actor is better. :)

getting acquitted in possibly the most inane movie trial EVER)

---------------

Is it just like the original where he takes off his shirt, shows the scars and basically gets off by saying "I'll stop them from doing this to other!"

???

Also - I'm guessing The Rock doesn't get his jaw shot off like the original, true story?

I thought this was actually an excellent movie up until the court scene. I was actually hooked in, it just seemed to have no direction after the court room scene.

The acting I thought was good, better than many action actors, and I think the film gets a lot of the flack because it's two stars are the wrassler and the guy from jackass.

Knoxville and The Rock made due with a bad script, and I was very pleased with how the Movie was alot better than it should have been.

People are calling it a box office bomb, but it finished at #2 over the weekend, making 15 Million, it'll probably end up somewhere around 50 in North America, which is about Break Even for the film.

I think that he will need a blockbuster soon if he's to keep his career on fire, and I'm very interested to see the Get Shorty sequel
