OK...keep in mind I didn't start watching wrestling until the summer of 1994...

What was the story, if any, behind the "Macho Man" Randy Savage vs. Ultimate Warrior match for the WWF Title at Summerslam 1992?

And if there isn't any major story, is that why the Intercontinental Title match between Bret "Hitman" Hart and British Bulldog was also heavily featured?

Kayfabe: Warrior was named Number 1 contender, Flair was pissed so he and Perfect did the "which corner will Mr. Perfect be in" plan and Flair won the Belt a couple of days later due to the leg injury that Savage suffered at Summerslam.

Warrior was supposed to Turn and join Perfect and Flair but he refused.

Bulldog vs. Bret had no Kayfabe storyline but if the event had been held in the USA then Shawn Michaels would have won the Belt in a Ladder Match.

Eh? Michaels probably would have won the belt at Summer Slam but I don't know about the ladder part.

Warrior didn't want to turn so he didn't get the belt.

I still have laughs to this day about the build-up video:

Macho Man: I'm the World Wrestling Federation Champion...AND YOU'RE NOT!

Warrior: GRR!

Later in the video, Mr. Perfect calls Savage The Macho Chicken. I've never seen Randy come down to the ring so fast.

Bret says it in his Shoot Interview.

I only remember it being on Prime Time Wrestling. I don't think it made any videos though. Flair won after Scott Hall interfered. I really can't remember match quality.

I don't get it...did they decide on having Summerslam 92 in England at the last second or something?

It was decided right around the time of WrestleMania - so in April or May, I believe. There was also talk of holding it at Landover's Capital Centre (where the Flair title change occured days after the PPV).

Davey Boy could have, in theory, ended the show opposite someone else and we still could have had the Bret/HBK match. I guess Vince wanted to give Davey a belt and since he wasn't world title material, a short transitional run with the IC strap would do. Then he could, as intended, put in on Michaels a few weeks later.

The second Flair/Savage match wasn't WMXIII quality from what I remember, but was still enjoyable for an 11 year old.

I remember Flair pinning Savage with the Figure Four leglock after Savage passed out from the severe pain.

They tease that finish, but I don't think I've ever seen it. I always thought it would be lame to get the pin off the figure four, yet inventive.

It's a pretty decent match. Bout ***1/2. Perfect brings the ultimate EVIL~!NESS

It's on Year in Review 1992.

Yep, ***1/2 on 1992 Year in Review.

I still have the match on tape, though I don't remember it being much anything special aside from the end result

The only thing that never made sense to me, even watching it back in my mark days, was the 3-count. After Savage "passed out" in the Figure-4, rather than doing the standard 1-2-3, Hebner had a good five seconds in between each count, and it wasn't a ref-bump slow count either.

When were Flair & Randy Savage fighting at Wrestlemania XIII?!

The Flair-Savage title change was at the Hersheypark Arena in Hershey, Pennsylvania, wasn't it?

As far as that match went, it was good but didn't have anywhere near the same intensity that the WrestleMania VIII match did.

I know, I just forgot to add the sarcasm tag to it.

Sadly, by WM XIII, Falir/Savage were still main eventing in WCW. (shiver)

And I still would have rather seen that than anything that actually made the WM13 card with the exception of Bret-Austin.

Hey buddy, get it right...

Flair won his 2nd WWF Title, days after WM, in HERSHEY, PA.  Not Landover.

Sorry, I feel obligated to respond...

The Landover taping was the day after Hershey so my apologies if I mixed the two up.

Slightly off topic here, how was the Ultimate Warrior-Ric Flair match that I believe was on a Coliseum video? I would think Flair could easily carry Warrior to a ***-***1/2 match easily and possibly a **** match. Or was it just a 7 or 8 minute quickie with a cop out finish.

Posted

My records show them facing each other seven times during September and October 1992, before Warrior walked out. And while two of the seven matches took place at TV tapings, nothing ever appeared on CHV.

I believe there is fan cam footage of one of their bouts, don't recall the city.

All the finishes were cop-out DQs or count-outs so I wouldn't expect the match to be anything earth-shattering. Flair gets knocked around the ring until either Perfect interferes to save the belt or the champion walks out of the match.

On a similar note, was the Second Savage vs Flair title match where Flair wins the belt for a second time any good? Was it ever released on video?

Pretty much EVERY Flair vs. Savage match before Savage majorly bulked up was awesome.
