Guest Anglesault Report post Posted April 8, 2004 I'm sure this was done at some point, but with three or four teams looking to hae possibly massive years, I figure we can do it again. What team would you consider to be the best team of all time? And what team is the best you've ever personally seen? Just a couple of notes. Don't feel compelled to name a World Series winner (You'd really be slighting a bunch of great Sawx teams), and also, the record doesn't have to be amazing. If you thought a team that won 85 games was the best team ever for whatever reason, just explain why. Dynasties are also allowed, for all those Murderers Row/Big Red Machine types. The best team I've ever personally seen is that 1998 Yankees team that just clicked on all cylendars Hate to stick with the Yankees, but I'd say that 27 Yanks is the best of all time. Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted April 8, 2004 Best team that I've seen has already been mentioned above. The 1984 Detroit Tigers were awesome. They were completely dominant that year from start to finish. The best team of all time was the 1970 Baltimore Orioles which featured three 20 game winners on route to 108 wins and complete dominance in the post-season by sweeping the Twins in the ALCS and dropping only one in a dismantling of the Big Red Machine in the World Series. The 1971 Orioles would feature FOUR 20 game winners, but this version was the better team.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted April 8, 2004 The 1919 White Sox. With their throwing of the World Series aside they absolutely dominated everybody. Look'em up if ya don't believe me.
Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2004 The 1919 White Sox. With their throwing of the World Series aside they absolutely dominated everybody. Look'em up if ya don't believe me. That is true, but the scandal basically took them out of consideration in my book. They certainly were the most talented team of all time.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted April 9, 2004 Kahran, have you seen the movie 8 Men Out? It actually makes you feel for the guys and understand why they did it. Although its apparent that through films and his play that Shoeless Joe Jackson didn't throw shit...he was playing full force

Although its apparent that through films and his play that Shoeless Joe Jackson didn't throw shit...he was playing full force Oh, I agree that Jackson had no clue what the hell he was getting into and his play indicates that he didn't throw anything. I think he should be let back in. Not the others. Eight Men Out does show sympathy for these guys, but it also shows that they actually did it (besides Jackson) as well. Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted April 9, 2004 Oh I know, the other 7 should remain banned for life...the only one who might enter the Hall with Shoeless Joe Jackson one day would be Buck Weaver. At the start of the series it seems he played with his all and then when the others started booting the ball and giving themselves for outs he joined in. Then from what I recall in films and reading he was closest to Shoeless Joe Jackson and Joe called him out in private so Buck once again continued to play full strength. The other 6 didn't give a shit at all though and there are better ways to get back at an owner and make money, even in those days.

I've never seen a team play so well together. Another thing about the Black Sox. They where without Hall of Fame P-Red Faber during the World Series. Ray Schalk contends even with the 8 players throwing the series, a healthy Faber would of given the Sox the World Series.
HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2004 Best Team Ever: Easily the 1927 Yankees. They had 130 more runs then 2nd place Detroit(975 to 845) and allowed 109 fewer runs then 2nd place Chicago White Sox(599 vs Chicago's 708). Had 2 guys with 200+ hits and Ruth had 192. 4 players had .400+ OBP's, Bob Meusel has a .393 OBP and Tony Lazzeri had a .383 OBP. Only 1 20 game winner in Waite Hoyt but Urban Shocker & Herb Pennock had 18 & 19 wins respectively and "CL" Wilcy Moore also went 19-7 with a 2.28 ERA. They finished with a team ERA of 3.20 and a team OBP of .381. Best team that I've ever seen, the 1998 Atlanta Braves probably. A team ERA of 3.25 with 3 pitchers getting sub 3 ERA's(Maddux at 2.22, Glavine at 2.47, Smoltz at 2.90) and all of the starters winning at least 16 and losing at most 11. A poor .338 team OBP but a respectable .453 team SLG and a .272 team BA. 3 players had 30+ HR's, 1 with 40+ and all this despite the most games among the starters was 160 by Chipper, 159 by Andruw Jones and 153 by Galaragga. Everybody else played in at most 133 games.

phoenixrising 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2004 1927 Yankees are the best of all time. Six Hall of Famers (Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, Combs, Hoyt and Pennock), the offense led the league in nearly every category (Ruth alone hit more homers - 60 - than any TEAM), the pitching was #1 in ERA, Gehrig and Ruth forming the greatest 3-4 punch of all time, five guys over .330...absolutely dominating. 1929-31 A's were very good with Lefty Grove, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Mickey Cochrane. Most dominating team I have ever seen personally was the 1998 Yankees - the playoffs were just a formality, everyone knew that was the best team by far that year and one of the best of all time, though I'd rank them below the 27 and the 1961 club with Maris and Mantle. Guest Anglesault Report post Posted April 9, 2004 1929-31 A's were very good with Lefty Grove, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Mickey Cochrane. Not really a best team ever, but lot of people over look the A's of the early 70s. I guess the Big Red Machine and the Bronx Zoo overshadows them, but they were a damn good team in their own right. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2004 First off, the 1919 White Sox. Shoeless Joe Jackson should never be reinstated into baseball. He accepted money for the purpose of throwing the World Series. He admitted this under oath. The discussion ends there. Furthermore, he knew about the fix, and did not notify his manager or superiors about the crooked players. In doing so, he was doing more to lose the World Series than to win it. As for Jackson's pperformance in the Series itself. Much has been made of his .375 batting average. But lets separate the wins from the losses. In the five losses, Jackson hit .286/.286/.571. If we take away game eight, which most conclude the Sox were trying to win, Jackson's hitting numbers in the first four numbers are an abysmal .250/.250/.375. Jackson failed to drive in a single run in the Sox' first four losses, and never drew a walk in the entire series. As for the team itself, about 34 teams have led the league in both runs scored AND runs allowed. The Sox did not. They won their division by 3.5 games. A good team, sure. But certainly not a historically dominant team. The 1975 Reds were better than the '76 club, because their pitching was much better. My pick for the best club: 1939 Yankees. They led the league in runs scored. They led the league in runs allowed, by a margin of nearly 150 runs. They won 106 games, and the World Series in four straight. Moreover, they famously lost Lou Gehrig, and were forced to play Babe Dahlgren for the rest of the season. If Gehrig had been healthy, they would have won 112-114 games. Not only that, but that team led the league in runs scored, runs allowed, and won the World Series EVERY YEAR from 1936-1939. There has never been a team that has come close to that level of sustained dominance.
