WWE Prevents Developmental Talent From Facing TNA Guy

Posted By Ashish on 04.11.04

They don't care if nobody has heard of him...

A match between WWE developmental talent Carly Colon and TNA's Abyss in Puerto Rico over the weekend was cancelled because WWE did not allow Colon to participate in the bout. The card had to be changed, with each guy being involved in different matches.

So did they think Abyss might shoot on him or something? I'm trying to figure out the concern from the WWE side and I'm wondering if they think that Abyss might try and injure one of their developmental workers because he's such a TNA stalwart. I've never heard of him doing that sort of thing before, but its not like I've followed Abyss/Prince Justice that closely.

The only reasoning I can come up with, is that they (WWE) don't want one of their guys to make a TNA guy look good in any way. I guess WWE views TNA as their closest competition (running PPV's, signing guys to TNA contracts), and thus don't want to help the "competition". Running the match would also give TNA reason to hype up one of their guys as "taking on the WWE".

Nevermind that Colon has been in developmentals, and practically nobody has heard of him (unless they read rumors/dirtsheets).

Not many have heard of Abyss, either.

At least World Wrestling is starting to view TNA as a threat (if only a very minor one).

I'd venture that Abyss is more well known to the wrestling community (or, at least moreso than Colon). Plus, TNA can hype up "TNA star took on WWE superstar" without specifically naming Colon.

I'm not saying it makes sense, I'm just trying to look at it from the WWE's perspective.

heh always thought if ever they got Abyss in the WWE he would be like Big Show's Brother I seen him on the one time I ever saw NWA Wildside on this corky channel that basically has nothing to show so they pick up anything. Abyss as Justice looks just like a Younger Big Show

Uh, JMA, if TNA wants to survive for a period of time, the WWE viewing them as a threat isn't in their best interests.

It's only in TNA's good interests if other media sources view them as a threat to WWE. That's how they get coverage, exposure, and the potential TV deal.

Time has shown that if WWE thinks a company is a threat to them, they work harder to put forth a better product. I do see where you're going, though. If Vince considered them a MAJOR threat he would've started raiding talent from TNA.

Thing is, if WWE finds them a threat, there will be talent raids --- and God knows TNA won't be able to retaliate. They could end up treating TNA they way they did the AWA in the late 80's.

TV execs don't follow the biz and don't know who is and who is not a threat (BTW, NOBODY is a threat to the WWE --- and nobody will be).

Not at the moment, no. But they won't be on top forever.

Who, honestly, can hope to compete? Who can combine the money, know-how, and talent to pull it off?

As far as American fans know, WWE IS wrestling.

As of right now - no one. If TNA keeps going strong, they have a shot. To compete with Vince you need money and recognition. TNA is slowly increasing both.

I'll guarantee it right now:

TNA will NEVER be in the same ballpark. Ever.

I agree with this 100% wholeheartedly.

Furthermore...I bet the only reason anyone in WWE cares at all is because TNA had people sign those contracts.

My money says JR or some other talent scout wanted to look into Trinity or Abyss (it HAS to be a big guy or a chick...you know it HAS to) and found out that there were actually people they couldn't sign.

And that's the end of that.

It will be interesting to see if this is allowed to fly:

"An extremely rare WWE vs. NWA TNA match was announced to take place at a Cyberspace Wrestling Federation event in Wayne, New Jersey on April 24th. NWA TNA’s Ron Killings will face WWE’s Al Snow in the headliner of the show. Snow is allowed to work Indy dates due to being on an announcer’s contract with WWE instead of a talent contract. Roddy Piper, Mike Tenay, and Michael Shane have also been scheduled to make appearances at the show for the CWF."

Normally, I would say that this might still be able to happen as Al Snow isn't a contracted wrestler for the WWE. But after watching RAW this week and seeing Snow in the ring again, I am thinking that whole thing might have changed or maybe the WWE is just enforcing it now.
