Guest Anglesault Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 Personally, I think the man is a blithering idiot who is bad at just about everything he does. He more or less ran that Brewers team into the ground and now allows his daughter or whomever is supposedly running the team to continue pouring the dirt on. And I'm not exactly sure where the Brewers share of the revenue sharing is going. As the Commish, he really doesn't seem to want to hide his biases, but my bigger problem with the man is he seems more focussed on leaving a Bud Selig legacy than actually trying to improve the game. Perhaps I'm just looking at the man through Pinstriped Colored Glasses, but I really don't see what use he has in baseball.
TheDevilAndGodAreRagingInsideMe Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 Aside expanding the playoffs to include a wildcard and expanding to 3 divisions (Which just happened to come into being during his regime, I'm not sure on his involvment on that) he's pretty useless. Edit > I also am highly against the idea of every MLB team having to retire Jackie Robinson's 42. I appreciate and admire the guy for what he did for the game and all, but 42 will be retired for Mariano Rivera and no one else, especially one who was never a Yankee (And was a big rival in the Giants/Dodgers/Yankees days)
Guest Anglesault Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 I'm personally not even a big fan of the Wild Card. I do think that Selig, for whatever reason, is trying to attach his regime to the name of Jackie Robinson.
Bored Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 His constant extortion of cities to build their billionaire owners new ballparks with only public funds has made him a disgrace to the game. That and the contraction debacle will be his legacy. He also in the past has gone out of his way to shit on my A's. He claimed they were a fluke back in 2000 because they went completely against his notion that teams like the A's couldn't win with a small payroll and low revenues. Every Spring Training he slithers into A's camp to say they can't compete without a new ballpark. He also said this about the A's a few years back: "I watched 32 years ago the Kansas City A's move to Oakland. They hurt the Giants badly. They never really did very well themselves. It was a horrible mistake." - Bud Selig, 6/2001, annual congressional baseball, Washington, D.C. Yup, I hate him.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 I have no real opinion of Bud, since he's the players' union bitch. Oh, and I like the wild card and hate inter-league play...
Kahran Ramsus Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 He is without a doubt, the single worst thing to ever happen to MLB.
Damaramu Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 I haven't been watching baseball for long but from everything I've seen and heard he's a moron that has no clue what he's doing. How long till there is a new commissioner?
sfaJack Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 To hell with the wild card. No second place team should ever get into the playoffs, regardless of how "exciting" it might make the postseason. Interleague play can go away as well; I think it's proven to not really be worth it. I generally don't like Selig. He's folded to the player's union too many times, and focuses too much of his time on silly things like the "this time it counts" All-Star game. The CBA signed in 2002 didn't accomplish much of anything except staving off another work stoppage. Expanding in '98 was a terrible idea. And the ridiculous "five times and you might actually be in trouble" steroid testing plan is a joke. Not to mention how he helped fuck over the fans in Milwaukee. Eh...Selig. He's gone in '06, I think. Good riddance. Maybe then we can get someone who can actually come up with a way to market the sport effectively AND get the TV contract the hell away from Fox.
Damaramu Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 It would be nice to have a commissioner that had a spine I suppose.
2GOLD Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 The Wild Card has made some exciting post-season series and it saves baseball from that piss poor alignment it once had. As for Bud, he's powerless to do anything and he's very much a moron. And Jackie Robinson did enough for the game to warrant his number being retired by every team. For all the hell he went through, I can't see it as a bad thing.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 I hate Bud Seilg. Every "improvement" he has made to baseball is a complete joke. He's threatened cities with contraction if they don't build publicly financed ballparks. The cities that did build new ballparks were fed a pack of lies about their team's chances of competing. He is constantly lying about the finances of the game in order to grab more money for himself and his greedy owners. I have no real opinion of Bud, since he's the players' union bitch. He's folded to the player's union too many times I missed something. What exactly has Bud done to favor the players' union. Moreover, what unsuitable demands has the players' union made, apart from the drug testing issue?

Is he saying that they never did well when they moved to Oakland? He can't be talking about how the team performed, because even he's not that stupid. Do they get poor attendance?
Bored Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 I think he is that stupid. Before the Giants built Pac Bell the A's outdrew the Giants the majority of the years that they've shared the market which is what he's referring to as them "hurting" the Giants. A lot of that had to do with the A's just having better teams overall since 1968.
Styles Posted April 17, 2004 Report Posted April 17, 2004 I think he is a spineless puppet who is basically an owner as de facto commisioner. He doesn't care about the good of the game, he cares about the bottom line. The imbalanced schedules and interleague play have been wretched and unfair. I can't wait for his contract to run out in 06 and hope Cal Ripken Jr. steps up and excepts the position so we can bring some credibility and class back to baseball...

Don't count on it. The commissioner is the owners' represenative, and chosen by them. The only reason they would go for an outsider is a complete lack of public confidence in baseball.

EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 17, 2004 Report Posted April 17, 2004 Far from it. Fans generally don't really care about the steroid issue. They believe (as do I) that baseball is played on the level, and baseball is experiencing an increase in popularity. Even if you think the NFL is more popular, its easily the #2 sports organization in the country.
Vern Gagne Posted April 17, 2004 Report Posted April 17, 2004 A majority of fans like the Wildcard and interleague play. If baseball wants to maintain a larger audience, more teams in postseason competion is a good thing. Contraction was Pohlad and Loria's fault.
The Czech Republic Posted April 17, 2004 Report Posted April 17, 2004 I really don't care for Selig. But really, having eight teams in the playoffs is fair enough, and works better than just four. And besides, do we really want the Atlanta Braves in the West division? Contraction is bullshit however. They can't take away the Expos, I won't allow it.
Guest Anglesault Posted April 17, 2004 Report Posted April 17, 2004 Contraction is bullshit however. They can't take away the Expos, I won't allow it. I take it you're the guy that goes to Olympic Stadium to see the Expos? You're like a celebrity.

I just want to go to their final game at Wrigley this September.
