Zack Malibu 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2004 "Hi mama, it's me." That sentence opens up our scene, as we see SWF newcomer Todd Cortez, also known by the nickname of the "Urban Legend", inside his hotel room. Holding a silver Motorola flip phone up to his ear, Cortez lays back on his bed, knocking his bag off of it. "So...did you see it? You did? Yes, yes it was, mama. I didn't think so either, but what can I say, you know? No, stop it, you know I'm just playin'!" While we can't hear the voice of Todd's mother on the other end, one would assume that they are discussing Todd's SWF debut this past week, which resulted in Todd and partner Mike Van Siclen capturing the SWF Tag Team Championship. "Mike? Yeah, he's all right I suppose. No problems yet. How are you doin', though? We can't just talk about me this whole time! Really? That's good. How're Lisa and Damon doing? Was he all excited about big brother being on TV? Haha, that boy's gonna be dropping my name all over that school now." Suddenly, the "THUD" of the hotel room door swinging open and crashing against the wall distracts Todd from his conversation. He turns around, and in comes his tag team partner, and now roommate during SWF tours, Mike Van Siclen. "What are you doing, man? Get off the phone! Have you seen the girls by the pool today?" asks the man who is not high on the list of many of the SWF faithful. "Excuse me, but I'm on the phone." "Man, f**k the phone. I'm saying we hit that pool NOW!" Cortez's eyes widen. "Mama, hold on one second, OK. Thank you." Cortez lays the phone down on the dresser, and turns to Van Siclen. Mike stretches a sly smirk across his face, but before another word can exit his mouth, Cortez grabs him by the hair, leads him into the bathroom, and shuts the door. "Now you listen to me." says Cortez, looking the man he shares the SWF Tag Titles with directly in the eyes. "I don't know you. I don't trust you. All I know is that I did a favor for a friend. When Thompson couldn't come in and help you out, he got me in. I've been waiting for a break like this for a long time, and I wasn't going to pass it up. I didn't know if you and I had a chance the other night. I felt like they were throwing me to the wolves, but we made it, and now we've gotta represent this company. I don't know about you, but that's not a game to me." "But..." Van Siclen tries to get a word in edge-wise, but Todd continues. "Now Mike, I'm an honorable man. I will travel up and down these roads with you and defend those belts. I will do my best to make something of my time here, but I want to make one thing clear. I do not answer to you. I do not follow your lead. I am my own man, and I will follow my own path. If you're in trouble, I'll be there for you. I'm your partner. Although, if you go out causing a ruckus and thinking I'm gonna save your ass just because you ran your mouth to the wrong person, think again. I'm not here to be anyone's savior. I'm here to be a champion. I'm here to make my family proud, and I will not be held accountable for the actions of others, partner or not. Is that clear?" "Crystal." quips Van Siclen. "I just figured you might want to go out and have a good time. I'm trying to break you in, that's all." "Well you picked a bad time." "C'mon man, who's so important on that phone that you can't call them back?" "My mama." With that, Van Siclen shuts up and backs off from Todd, not confronting him about it anymore. Cortez opens the door to the bathroom, and walks back into the main portion of the room, swiping his phone up from the dresser. "Hi mama, sorry about that. It was just those room service people, they don't know when to leave you alone." Van Siclen, who is heading out of the room, stops and turns around. He and Todd look at each other, and Mike just chuckles to himself before shutting the door behind him, leaving Todd to continue his conversation.
Dace59 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2004 Interesting promo. We have the ever handy tag team tension already. This could turn out to be something big.
the.weej 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2004 And Knowing Is Half the Battle? G... I... JOE~! I admit, that's all I really wanted to comment for. That said, good promo--Cortez has CHARACTER! HUZZAH! The honourable warrior thing is nothing new, but it does have an interesting dynamic paired up with the superficial and egotistical Van Siclen. It's doubly interesting 'cause, y'know, they kinda' went out and won the tag titles in their first match. It's thricly interesting because there's a reasonably lively tag division for this kind of storyline to flourish in. You remember that thing we had about a year ago? Where OAOASTers would come in and have ridiculous success in the SWF? Yeah. Don't expect that to stop here. -Z

Toxxic 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2004 It's thricly interesting because there's a reasonably lively tag division for this kind of storyline to flourish in. You mean unlike six weeks ago, when it consisted of Wild & Dangerous... and the House of Todd... and that was IT? Go with the promo-ing! Will be interesting to see how long this team holds together.
