Bruiser Chong Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Dusty Baker was suspended for a game today and Kerry Wood for five, as a result of their actions during the Cubs / Reds series a couple weeks back. Can't say I'm surprised, although I thought they both had good cases for acting the way they did, although they carried it out a bit too far.
Fuzzy Dunlop Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Well, Dusty's whole thing went on way too long, and he was throwing stuff and inciting the fans to throw stuff as well, but all Kerry Wood did is yell at the ump about a bad call; hitters and pitchers complain about calls all the time. In my opinion, this is bullshit, and it's coming at the worst possible time, heading into St. Louis.

Fuzzy Dunlop Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Manager Dusty Baker and pitcher Kerry Wood of the Chicago Cubs have each been disciplined for their conduct during the Cubs-Cincinnati Reds games in Chicago, Illinois on April 16 and April 17, 2004, respectively. Baker has been suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount for his inappropriate actions during the bottom of the seventh inning during the April 16th game. Wood has been suspended for five games and fined an undisclosed amount for his inappropriate actions during the top of the ninth inning of the April 17th game. Bob Watson, Vice President of On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement. Both suspensions are scheduled to begin tonight. If appealed, Wood's suspension will be held in abeyance until the process is complete. I just found this on MLB.com. Wood should appeal now, so he can take on The Cards, and with any luck we can drag this thing out a while.
Guest OctoberBlood Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Haha, deservingly so. The Wrigley fans should be susspended as well. What they did was totally lame and inexcusable.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 The only reason Wood is suspended five games is that its the only way to make it effective. If Wood was suspended one game, he'd simply take it on a rest day. So MLB needs to make it five.
Mik Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 The Rockies just made the mistake of walking Mike Lowell to get to Hee Seop Choi in the top of the 9th, as he goes deep for a 3 run HR (7) to put the Marlins up 9-4. With the way this series has been going, that's not a guarantee. Also in the game, Miguel Cabrera hit a HR to tie Barry Bonds for the Major League lead (9).
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Good slate of games tonight. A's/Yankees on the YES Network (or ESPN), Angels/Tigers on ESPN, and Cards/Phillies on CN8. Thankfully, my cable company picks up the CN8 feed for Phillies games. Also need to keep an eye on the Flyers/Leafs game.
Guest OctoberBlood Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 AND REDS BREWERS~!!~1 OMGLOL Heh. The "Rejuvenating Play" on Real Reds today. Classic. Tomko gives up back to back to back to back HR in the 1st to the Phillies, and the Reds come back to win and the boo birds sound off. Lovely.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Yankees score 3 in the first. Angels/Tigers tied at two after one inning.
MrRant Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 I can't believe they played the nWo Wolfpack theme when Giambi came up to bat...
Guest Anglesault Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 I can't believe they played the nWo Wolfpack theme when Giambi came up to bat... They've played it since he came to the team.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 I wish they'd cut out that "Day-O" crap over the speakers. Is that supposed to rally the team or something? Jeter's standing in the on-deck circle and hears the crowd's braindead response of Day-O and thinks to himself, "I am a highly trained hitter, among the best in my field. Now that I've heard 50,000 idiots* say Day-O, I can get a hit!" It boggles the mind. *They are not idiots because they are Yankees fans. They are idiots for chanting along.
MrRant Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 I can't believe they played the nWo Wolfpack theme when Giambi came up to bat... They've played it since he came to the team. You poor bastard.
Guest Anglesault Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Get PQ up. We chant along with Day-o?
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Its not Yankees-exclusive. I just heard it on the Tigers game. Its brainless, pointless, and highly annoying. Tigers up 5-2 in the third. Not a good start for Bartolo Colon.
MrRant Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 I also heard it during the Heat vs. Hornets game last night.
NoCalMike Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 I wonder if the A's are up to their usual april/may tailspin, where they barely get to .500 at the All-Star break, only to bring the thunder in the second half......hopefully. Their pitchers are just not throwing their best stuff now, and if last night was any indication of the bullpen's skills.......
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Love to hear the Yankees' announcers blather on about productive outs, and the Moneyball philosophy. Then they mention the A's and Red Sox are LAST in productive outs, and the Yankees are third last. Yet these teams win ballgames. Do you see the subtle connection here? I get the feeling 95% of the analysts who bash Moneyball have not read it.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Blue Ridge Cable was helpful enough to carry the Phillies feed. I can currently listen to the audio, accompanied by images of the community calender.
Guest OctoberBlood Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Well, it feels good tonight. Not that anyone cares. Reds leading 9-0 in the 4th.
Mik Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 I figured this is as good a place as any to put this... AJ Burnett threw 50 pitches today, and has already worked his curveball back into his rotation. He is supposed to pitch simulated batting practice later in the week. The Marlins, doctors, and AJ expect him back for July 1. This is gonna be huge for the Marlins. There are plenty here who already know, but for those who don't...AJ has probably the best stuff in the whole Marlins rotation. He lead the majors in complete games two years ago and was towards the top in shutouts. Hence the injury, as Torborg threw his arm off. It's going to be like acquiring a huge free agent for the stretch run.
Guest OctoberBlood Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 That is awesome news for the Marlins (I'm a fan of AJ, hell - how can you not be a fan of anyone on the Marlins pitching staff?). I just wish they'd put Justin Wayne into the rotation, to see what he can offer, and have Oliver go long relief and spot start. But, I guess you go with the vet for now. He did pitch surprisingly decent for Colorado last year. But still ... he's quite bad.. almost as bad as JIMMAH~! (Haynes.)
Mik Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 xxxxxxxxxxx G GS W L IP H ER HR BB SO K/9 WHIP ERA Justin Wayne 5 0 1 0 10.1 2 0 0 3 5 4.35 0.48 0.00 Darren Oliver 4 4 2 1 22.1 31 20 8 6 16 6.45 1.66 8.06 I couldn't agree more. Every 5th day I expect the Marlins to lose, but miraculously Oliver has only gotten shelled once.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Oliver was never a particularly good pitcher, and its only because he's a name that he's stuck around for so long. I don't agree with using Wayne however. That hit rate is not sustainable, and he's never really impressed in the minors.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 On a side note, this is another example of the value of K and BB rates. Two pitchers with low ERAs despite bad peripherals, Kirk Rueter and Nate Cornejo, have been shelled this year. Darren Oliver is getting hit, and Damian Moss still can't put it together.
Slayer Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Goddammit... Reds are looking to blow another game to the Jr. Cheeseheads 9-0 lead now down to 9-6
