Jet Li preview HERO question

Recommended Posts

I saw this preview this weekend when I saw Kill Bill vol 2. I'm wondering if this is rerelease of an old movie kind of like Drunken Master 2 which became Legend of Drunken Master for western audiences. So is HERO really Swordman 2 or a movie from the 90s? I think I seen Donnie Yen and Maggie Cheung in the previews also.

My friend's parents live in China and when he went to visit them about a year ago he said this movie was everywhere and the most popular movie in the country, so I'm gonna assume it's a new movie.

Actually, it's directed by Zhang Yimou, the man behind Raise the Red Latern. I saw it about a year ago when it opened theatriacally in Sweden and liked it alot. The visuals, and especially the use of colour, are absolutely breathtaking.

From what I understand, QT is looking to get it distributed in the States, kinda like Shaolin Soccer and other such Asian imports.

My boss lent me an Asian DVD copy of that movie this past weekend. None of the menu items were in English, so it took about 20 minutes to find the option for English subtitles.

Ziyi Zhang (Jen from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) plays an apprentice in the movie. I thought it was a pretty good movie, but I didn't like it as much as CTHD.

I've heard this movie talked about but actually seeing the trailer, I was amazed. I imported the Asian dvd as soon as I got home. I'll probably have the same subtitle problem.

Yep, it's the same thing he did with Iron Monkey a few years ago...

A friend of mine actually found a region 0 copy and got it so I've seen it. It's an amazing movie. "Ying Xiong" was released in 2002 starring Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Maggie Cheung, and Xiyi Zhang. According to IMDB, QT was actually a producer, although they may just mean he secured the American rights to the movie. I've read that it should be coming out on DVD here in the States fairly soon (I've even seen May, but that's always subject to change).

Anyway, the use of color is outstanding, and the story is excellent. The sheer number of extras they used in a couple of scenes is mindboggling for an Asian film that probably didn't have 1/4 the budget an equivalent American movie would've had. If you like Asian movies like CTHD, I for one recommend it.

Disney just slaps "Quentin Tarantino Presents" on the movie, that's his only involvement.
