Star Wars vs. Star Trek...

Recommended Posts

Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes

Probably one of the biggest wars in history of movies and television, the wars of the Stars. Star Trek has it's geeky William Shatner lovers while Star Wars fans (including myself) praise MARK HAMILL for some reason.

So, with nothing said at all, which fans seems to be more nerd-ish? I'll say Star Trek because watching five minutes of the crap makes me sick, and only the most die-hard fans could stomach it, while Star Wars has everything...plus entertainment.

So let the discussion begin. Star Wars rules. Star Trek sucks.

Edit: Ignore the messy sub-title, I couldn't fit the whole thing so it's SUPER abreviated.

Star Trek fans are nerdier due to the more "scientific" nature of the storyline. They go around quoting all kinds of bizarre specifications, protocol, policy, and that kind of stuff.

Star Wars fans are dorkier, as they go around arguing the finer parts of being a Jedi and such. That is because SW is much more character driven.

In my opinion, both have their own strengths. The original Trek series was great. Get past some bad acting and cheesiness, they had some pretty interesting messages. They were even able to pull it together for some really good movies (II, IV, and VI). The next generation is good in its own right, thanks to having some really good character building/evolution through the series. DS9 could be brilliant at times, and Voyager sucked ass. Enterprise is hit or miss.

The original three Star Wars movies were great, but they messed up the whole thing with the last two movies and constantly revising/changing the originals.

I like both, and for the most party they are both entertaining. Star Wars is looked as being superior, because let's face it, most people that you can identify as being Star Trek fans are really scary.

So its more of a discussion of which fan is more insane or which franchise is better? I must say that the Star Wars fans are more insane because of the fact that people sat in line MONTHS to buy tickets to see JAR JAR BINKS!

A mix of both, but more of fans being weirder/bigger dorks.

Im going kinda off topic in my OWN thread, but in an episode of Chappelle's Show, with the Jedi Sex Scandal they had a Star Trek geek being itnerviewed, then someones comes up and wedgies him. I want to say the fan was dressed like Darth Maul, except the facial tattoos were almost completely wrong. Unless of course its a Star Trek character.

Speaking of Darth Maul, he deserved to live for another episode. He was the man. But Jar Jar Binks should've died. Ugh. 5 Minutes was all I needed before wanting to go into Star Wars universe and slice his throat open.

I don't think either are nerdy.

I'd prefer not to pigeonhole someone like that, because they could turn out to be a really cool person. But society says "Well this is socially unacceptable! These people are dorks!" and everyone is like "Yeah!"

Hell if society said "Well bling bling rappers that objectify women are dorks!" and portrayed them as such all the time then we'd be having a discussion about that.

....Have you ever spoken to over-the-top Star Trek fans? Heck, even some Star Wars fans I've met are nuts. I'm not innocent either, because now and then I'll just talk about nothing but Star Wars shit.

As a former Trekkie (I really stopped watching consistantly after DS9 went off the air) I have to say Star Trek fans are way nerdier than Star Wars fans. At least the ones you see at conventions. When I was in elementary school I went to one, and my god that was wierd.

However, as for which is better, I have to say Star Trek. If this was 1998 I would definitely said Star Wars, but after The Phantom Menace it's hard to find it "cool" again.

Darth Maul was not the man, he was a marketing gimmick. But a pretty good one.

Wars probably has more casual fans than Trek. Pitting one set of hardcore fans against the other, I'd probably say Wars fans are worse. Star Trek is, by nature, nerdy. Star Wars gets this kind of devotion without really warranting it.

Personally, I find the old Star Wars movies to be fine, but nothing special. I do sleep on Star Wars sheets, but for the retro hipness of it. The only Star Trek series I'll watch is Next Generation, and that extremely rarely. So as far as which series is better, they're pretty equal to me.

Both are nerdy as in the case of Trekkies talking in Klingon which sounds like someone clearing their throat. And let's not forget about the Star Wars fan waiting in line at midnight to purchase ever single new toy form Toys R Us. Also in some country I'm not sure where but JEDI is considered a RELIGION! I want to say they are Aussies but not sure.

The Borg Queen would assimilate Princess Senator Abadabaadeee.

I'm glad I'm not that much of a fan, to wait online at Toys R Us for freakin toys, but I'll buy the occasional if I have the money on me. $9 for a fucking 3.5 inch figure is shitty, especially when some characters released you see for like 1 second in the movies.

Of course, I am guilty of buying the CCG's of Star Wars. :( But I'll never sleep on Star Wars sheets. No way I want my BUTT being anywhere near Luke or Chewies mouth.

On a minor Star Wars note, am I the only one who thinks the SNES games were awesome? They just seemed so perfect and had good challenges for a side scroller. (Damn you AT-AT's!) But now I'm rambling and this mini-paragraph is better suited in Video Games & Toys.

The Star Wars Atari game ruled! To me Star Wars was nothing but a 2 hour commercial for merchandise to shrill to all of the marks of the world. You hate Jar Jar Binks.........well buy this poster and throw darts at it. Have extra money to waste well spend $30 on the very special Star Wars edition of Monoply.

I didn't think Episode II was too bad, but the Phantom Menace tarnished the name. But I wouldn't say it was outright BAD, just a let-down.

Considering Lucas directs MOVIE actors like they are STAGE actors and gets consistently wooden performances out of them, I'd have to say that Trek tends to interest me more. Trek lacks nothing in the character department. TNG and DS9 were both intensely driven by character change and growth. The Original Trek movies also focused more on character depth and growth than on action. I dislike Lucas's general film-making style and I dislike his character direction to the actors. If he fully utilized the options available to him as a film maker, the SW movies could be soooo much better.

At the end of the day, however, neither series as a whole beats the other. They're two different animals. Entirely. The only big commonalities they have have are that they're both sci-fi/military/space based.

I have seen nothing of either.

And let's be honest - we're the wrestling equivalent of the Trekkie. And I'm sure that there are some Trekkies here. Come on, be honest.

From what I've seen, Star Wars are epic films. Star Trek is a fairly epic show with some crummy films.

Oh, and for those the bash Star Wars so much, although I can't pass judgment, I'm sure that you would get a lot of heat from even the mainstream fans.

There was a Star Wars game that I did enjoy, though... I think it was for the Nintendo NES console.

I used to be a huge Star Wars fan but the last 2 movies have really turned me on the whole series. Lucas gets so involved with special effects that he forgot to make a story.

I'm not. If you are, that's a lot worse.

Star Wars aren't epic movies either. They're above average children's movies. That's not a critique per se, but don't make them out to be something they aren't.

I'll put it this way from what I heard a NYC sports radio host said about the sci-fi and fantasy genres "I hate all that Star Trek Deep Space Nine crapoloa. Well except for Star Wars, Han Solo, you know that was cool"

That is pretty much how the mass pop-culturely aware audience (the ones that care about whats on Access Hollywood and E!, read Entertainment Weekly, US, People, ect regliously, the ones that make the number one movies/TV shows generally crapfests, ect) sees the two franchises.

Star Trek is sci-fi personified while Star Wars is something acceptable to watch because its "cool"

That was probably my biggest problem with Ep. I, Jar Jar aside -- I wanted to see more of Mr. Maul. I don't know, I guess it was his cool "double saber."

Put me down as saying Trek fans are worse...

Have there been movies documenting Star Wars fans?

And have you seen the movies documenting Star Trek fans?

*shudders*

IMO, Trekkies/Trekkers (c'mon! There's a debate even over the name of the nerds!) are faaaaar worse than SW fans.

I used to be a huge Star Wars fan but the last 2 movies have really turned me on the whole series. Lucas gets so involved with special effects that he forgot to make a story.

Another main problem is his choice of directors. For "Empire", arguably the best SW film, he had a strong director that was willing to stand up to Lucas. For the 2 prequels, he's got Rick McCallum, who is basically just a yes man for Lucas.

I'm a huge SW fan. Ep. 1 & 2 are far below the original 3, however I don't have a problem watching Ep. 2 again & again, whereas the last time I watched Ep. 1 was when it was in the theaters.

I prefere Star Trek myself. I don't have a lot against Star Wars, I just happen to prefere Trek. Particually the movies and The Next Generation. Episodes IV & VI of Star Wars are good films (I don't see them as classics unlike most people) but the newer films have really put me off watching the older films again. Apart from Empire which is a fantastic film.

As for the fans I would say Trek fans are worse than Star Wars fans on the whole. Although some Star Wars fans can be equally as bad.
