MEAN GIRLS DOES BIG BOX OFFICE!

Recommended Posts

Guest OraleHolmes

It will make an estimated 25 million this weekend. That's more than the amount Man On Fire and 13 Going On 30 made last week.

So, Lindsey Lohan out-draws Denzel, Garner, The Rock, Johnny Depp....and countless others.

Wow.

I'm the one who is supposed to blow his load over this and proclaim Tina and Tim Meadows the next big box office stars.

Considering that Confessions... opened to only 9 million and the whole movie was built around Lindsay Lohan- she has a way to go

Wha-?

I only saw one preview for it up until now. Man I'm getting old...

I don't think you're Mean Girls target audience kkk.

I saw a lot of ads for Mean Girls and I didn't like them since they were misleading. Instead of focusing on the fact that it's a very smart and very funny movie about teens they made it look like your average teen flick.

It's not surprising first day sales were big since teens often will see a movie the first day.

But I know people who went to theatres where Mean Girls was sold out and it wasn't in teen populated areas.

I think the good reviews and the constant press that Tina did for the movie really helped.

It must be much better than I thought it would be, cuse I thought this was just another shitty teen flick.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if Mean Girls blows the new MK & A Olsen picture out of the water?

There's a bunch of shit that's doesn't have me in mind in regards to target audience, but damnit, I still pay attention on the latest trends and fads you young whippersnappers follow.

So who is this Jessica Simpson person everyone has been talking about?...

Lohan looked absolutely SMOKIN' on an SNL preview for tonight's show.

Sure, it'll almost definitely suck, but she's gorgeous.

What about Lacey Chabert. She's come a long way from Party of Five...

BOX OFFICE MOJO

MID-WEEKEND REPORT

-------------------------

April 30-May 2, 2004: Projections and Analysis

Rank. Movie Title (Distributor) / Theater Count

Weekend Projection | % Change | Total Gross | Week #

1. Mean Girls (Paramount) / 2,839

$24 million | - | $24 million | 1

An estimated $8.6 million opening day likely reduced most grown box office

analysts to declare, "like, ohmigod!" 'Mean Girls' always looked like the

only movie of this frame that would register more than a blip on the box

office radar, but for it to not only dominate but out-open the mega-hyped,

"pre-destined sleeper hit" '13 Going on 30' makes it the big success story

of an already record-breaking April.

Viacom-owned Paramount had its classic corporate synergy firing on all

cylinders this time, typified by star Lindsay Lohan's appearance on, of

all places, Paramount TV's syndicated hit 'Dr. Phil.' What made that stint

seem relatively organic is also what gave 'Mean Girls' an edge over '13

Going on 30' and other recent, fantastical movies targeting young women.

Like many "surprise" youth hits, it was based in a real life phenomenon

that kids relate to if not live everyday ? in this case, the vicious

social dynamics of high school girls. (To Paramount's credit, their other

teen pictures this year, the far from 'Perfect Score' and the modest

success 'The Prince and Me' were also more grounded than other studios'

offerings.) The punchy marketing and good reviews enhanced the picture's

stature and likely broadened the demographics.

Paramount scored an encouraging success with 'Mean Girls' after

essentially going hit-free since 'School of Rock' last October and in

general being rife with misses these past few years. But it remains to be

seen whether the studio's current strategy of remaking famous movies from

its history (upcoming 'Stepford Wives,' 'Manchurian Candidate,' 'Alfie,'

just announced 'Bad News Bears,' etc.) will reverse its fortunes in

general.

2. Man on Fire (Fox) / 2,986

$14 million | -38% | $44 million | 2

The presence of Denzel Washington and the focus on his relationship with

Dakota Fanning set this R-rated revenge picture apart from the glut of

similarly-themed movies in the marketplace ? ones that centered mostly on

the vengeance part but not so much on the vengeance FOR WHOM and thereby

having less emotional resonance amongst potential moviegoers. The

demographics bore this out ? 55% of the opening weekend was female and 68%

over the age of 25, according to Fox's exit polling, compared to its more

male and youth-skewing rivals.

The $70 million 'Man on Fire' is Washington's slickest looking picture

(courtesy of slickster director Tony Scott) since 'Training Day' and

business has been comparable. Washington is one of the most consistent box

office draws around. Like Tom Hanks, his name stands for quality in the

public's mind. Although, Washington's winning streak has been thanks

mostly to morally-compromised characters in hard-hitting dramas (and

continues with July 30's 'Manchurian Candidate'). While Hanks does comedy,

Washington's last and only attempt since becoming a leading man was 1996's

'The Preacher's Wife.' Perhaps a romantic comedy is in store to take him

beyond that $70-million-ish domestic plateau he seems to have reached.

3. 13 Going on 30 (Sony/Revolution) / 3,453

$10.5 million | -50% | $36 million | 2

Wilted 55% on Friday in the face of 'Mean Girls,' Jennifer Garner's first

star vehicle nonetheless has posted solid numbers, tainted somewhat by the

fact it?s the widest release ever for this kind of movie and by having the

hype machine in overdrive. The $37 million female 'Big' had a can't-miss

hook ? it's exemplary of the high concept comedy with its title alone

basically telling all you need to know, like Sony/Revolution's 'Daddy Day

Care' last year.

4. Laws of Attraction (New Line) / 2,449

$7.3 million | - | $7.3 million | 1

5. Godsend (Lions Gate) / 2,323

$7 million | - | $7 million | 1

6. Envy (DreamWorks) / 2,445

$6 million | - | $6 million | 1

7. Kill Bill Vol. 2 (Miramax) / 2,742

$5.5 million | -47% | $52 million | 3

8. The Punisher (Lions Gate) / 2,267

$3.2 million | -49% | $29 million | 3

9. Johnson Family Vacation (Fox Searchlight) / 1,116

$1.8 million | -41% | $27 million | 4

10. Home on the Range (Disney) / 1,915

$1.8 million | -48% | $45 million | 5

- Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius (Film Foundry) / 1,332

$1.1 million | - | $1.1 million | 1

Projections based on Friday estimates:

Orale, please refrain from using all caps in the thread title. It's needless.

The more I read about this film, the more I want to see it. I've heard it being compared to films like Heathers (but less dark and no one dies in this one). All I wanted to do was see how well Lacey Chabert had grown up (PO5 sure had it's share of hot chicks), but I'll probably pay attention to the rest of the movie now.

You said that just because he has 4 posts, didn't you? ;)

It's shocking news, so he put it in caps.

Let me get this straight...

Someone lost it cause a movie with four hot females, some of which are underaged but that doesn't matter since they are the perfect age for teen boys, made big money when the only other movie to open against it was GODSEND?

It's a teen revenege comedy with Lohan in a push-up bra....where is the shock I am suppose to be experiencing that this did well?

Because those don't always do that great?

Girl next door with Elicia Cuthbert, someone thats hotter than all 4 of them combined, pulled in something like 5 mil for it's first weekend.

I thought it looked good from the previews. I actually want to see it. I don't see how someone could say it looked like teen garbage. It looked just as good as any teen film from the 80's.

If it has an 80+ on RottenTomatoes.com, I guess I was correct in my view of it.
