The Alexander Perezhogin Incident

So what are everyone's thoughts on this incident? In my opinion the actual incident itself was far worse than Bertuzzi, McSorely or any of the other recent incidents. However, in Perezhogin's defence, that other guy (Stafford?) took a swing at Perezhogin's head right before that. As well, I'm wondering if Perezhogin intended to nail Stafford in the back of the head (although that doesn't make it any better) seeing as how Stafford turned his face around right before getting hit.

And I hate to sound like a broken record, but the McSorley/Brashear 'incident' WAS NOT THAT BAD. There's been worse ones since then that have gone unrecognized, yet the love tap that McSorley gave Brash is what everyone remembers.

This kid was retaliating at how Stafford swung at his head first. I feel bad that the guy is injured, but he shouldn't be swinging his stick first. He kinda brought it on himself.

Yeah, I'm not condoning the slash or anything, but he wouldn't have done it had Stafford not swung at his head first. I don't know if it can even be compared to the McSorley/Brashear or Bertuzzi/Moore incidents, since this one wasn't premeditated. It was a split second reaction to getting almost getting slashed in the head, but you have to have more control over your emotions.

Thanks, Spicy, that's exactly what I meant. I shouldn't have used (relatively) cryptic terms like "blood marks" without putting quotes around them, I guess. Even when I re-read it now, though, it still makes sense, but I might be crazy.

 

And how can anyone say that American media over sensationalized this ... they'd have to report it in order to sensationalize it, and it's getting less attention then that ultra-exciting Detroit-Milwaukee NBA playoff series.

Speaking of gruesome hockey images, Sportscenter last night showed the incident where the goalie had his jugular vein (or something similar) severed back in the 1980s. I had never seen it before. It was just nasty, truly the scariest thing I've ever seen in sports, even though I knew he lived.

He kept playing for several years after the incident. I don't know know if all goalies wear neckguards nowadays.

I was at work, and just glanced at the TV in the break room to see this guy doubled over literally SPRAYING blood all over the ice. Wasn't what I was expecting on ESPN. Ho-lee shit. I've also seen a clip of a Karate expert getting a cucumber sliced by a Katana while the thing sat on his neck. Anyway, the guy fucked up and got his neck slashed open to similar results.

Malarchuk was lucky. He was on the end where the zamboni enters/exits, so he was able to skate himself off the ice quickly to get help. IIRC, they said if he had been on the other end of the ice, he probably would have died.

I've also heard that the fact that Malarchuk was hurt while on the ice (compared to other sports played on a field or court) was instrumental in saving his life, something to do with the cold air/ice slowing the blood flow.

So Perezhogin ends up with a suspension for the rest of the playoffs and all of next season, while Stafford gets 6 games for his initial swing. Sounds about fair.

No, I think it's about right. Sets a good precedent about what you can and can't do with your stick and I'm really glad Stafford got a suspension, too, since he pretty much instigated the whole thing by swinging his stick first.
