Sports Feats You'd Like to See...

Recommended Posts

MLB: 30 wins for a pitcher, .400 avg, 4000 career hits

NFL: 5000 passing yards, a hail mary that wins a big game

NBA: A team winning the NBA Title without one star. A qaudruple double

NHL: +100 for a regular season, 80 goals

I see a quarterback throwing for 5000 yards being the most believable.

I wanna see somebody try to approach the Major League triples record which is 36 triples, which was set by Owen "Chief" Wilson in 1912.

No player has come within ten since the end of the dead-ball era. Triples were easier to get when the old parks had deep outfields and unpredictable bumps, and fielding was not quite as refined. I would be surprised to see anyone approach Wilson's record.

Billy Hamilton's run record was impressive since he scored 192 runs in 129 games.

Alongside a .523 OBP. Hamilton's Phillies scored 1,143 runs that season, good for third in the National League. The 1890s were THE most profilic era for run scoring in history. Teams surrendered an average of two unearned runs a game.

.400

56 game hitting streak

100 pt game

those are the three big ones to me. I think 56 can be broken, it doesn't seem that hard for a great hitter, but since nobody has come close I guess it is. I remember Luis Castillo had like a 30 game streak a few years back, think that's the closest anyone has come recently. .400 is another one I think someone can reach, I'd put my money on Ichiro out of current players.

the 100 pt game though, nobody will ever do that again in the NBA without drastic rule changes. David Robinson's 72 is the modern standard.

NBA:  A team winning the NBA Title without one star.  A qaudruple double

Quadruple-doubles

I would like to point out that Alvin Robertson was one of the sickest muthafuckas I ever seen, son!!! That dude was a great defender that one season held Jordan...IN THE 80'S mind you, to 8 and 11 points repectively in their matchups that year.

He was later arrested for stealing a stereo or something like that.

I remember when Hakeem had one in 1994- I think if J-Kidd had a REALLY good day stealing the ball he could get it. The guy almost always has a triple double anyway

3. Gretzky said scoring 50 goals in 29 or 39 games would be his hardest record to break. Maybe it can be broken by Crosby or what about Overchecking.

No one will EVER break this record, at least not under the current rules, and probably not under any more relaxed rules, either. NHL players are having enough trouble scoring 50 in an entire season...they'd need to score 50 in less than HALF a season to break the record.

And I predict that Sidney Crosby won't have near the impact on the league that everyone predicts he will. I'm figuring him to be an Eric Lindros-type player.

I don't know about stealing stereos, but he was definitely into beating on women. He got caught beating up his wife when he was on the Bucks, beating up a girlfriend when he was on the Raptors, and then breaking into some chicks apartment and choking her after he retired.

I think for the steal variety that LeBron and Iverson have the best shot. If Kidd could get 10 steals he would have done it by now, he's lost a step off his speed from a few years back.

Yeah, he was truely a piece of shit, but that guy could play some damn defense.

Having your name on an elite list with the other three certainly can't be a bad thing

I still say that Wilt Chamberlains double triple double beats that though. 22 points, 25 rebounds, and 21 assists. That is some sick shit.

NFL:  a hail mary that wins a big game

It has happened a few times. If not a win, the hail mary sent them to OT where they did win (I think Bears vs Browns or Bengals, one of the Ohio teams, in 2000 when the QB Shane Matthews chucked the ball like 40-60 yards into the endzone where there were a crowd of players ready to play jump ball, and the Bears got it in the end.) But it wasn't a big game, so nevermind.

Back on the topic of quadruple doubles, here's a couple other notable statlines

11/1/96: Clyde Drexler: 25 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals, 9 assists

3/31/02: Ron Artest: 24 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists, 8 steals

And Duncan was two blocks shy of one in the championship clincher in 2003. There's never been one achieved in the playoffs.

Without looking, I can almost guarantee that no one's ever had ten steals and ten blocks in the same game...or even different games, for that matter.

Alongside of quadruple-double consideration for Kidd and Iverson, I'd like to cast a vote for the guards in Washington - Hughes and Arenas. Those motherfuckers seem to rack up steals, moreso Hughes who averages nearly THREE steals a game.

EDIT: Kirilenko, at the beginning of the season, looked like he could get the block stat out of the way in a few games. But, with the injuries he's had to fight through since then, I doubt he could even pull off a triple.

I know that Kevin Johnson once had a game with 20+ points, 10+ assist, 10+ steals and he had 7 boards. they were trying to get him a few boards at the end to get the quad but couldn't.

anyone ever had a triple double without points?  How about rebounds-steals-blocks?  I could see Rodman doing something close to that.

I did it in High school if that counts for something.

Ripper - realizing it doesn't count for anything since 1:54 pm

oh, and it was rebounds, assist, steals...not blocks.

Ripper - Short since 1979.

It was December 9, 1993 against Washington, though I can't find the box score at this moment.

I did find this one while looking for it:

2/18/85: Larry Bird: 30 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, 9 steals

For the record, he didn't get the last steal because the game was a blowout and he didn't want to go back in.

Who was the opponent? I'm going to travel back in time and slap whoever let Bird jack them for 9 steals.

Alongside a .523 OBP. Hamilton's Phillies scored 1,143 runs that season, good for third in the National League. The 1890s were THE most profilic era for run scoring in history. Teams surrendered an average of two unearned runs a game.

And if you project what Hamilton did in 129 games to 162 games, you get this:

276 hits in 683 AB, 241 runs, 31 doubles, 19 triples, 5 homers, 109 RBI, 158 walks

If you take what the Phillies did in 129 games and project it to 162 games, you get 1435 runs.

If you take what they did in 129 games and put it in 162 games, the runs per game average drops from 8.86 to 7.06 per game.

If anybody is going to approach that record, they will have to get on base a lot and have a strong offense to knock them in.

More importantly, you need opposing defenses who make 4x more errors than they do today.
