Sass 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2004 I think I read that Oakland cut Hambrick a few days after signing him. Hambrick is still listed on the team's official roster.
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted May 24, 2004 With the Raiders o-line, Collins will have plenty of time to make a solid pass. I think the receiving core is where the Raiders will ultimately be lacking. The tight end situation will be fine for the Raiders as Turner is planning on using a 2 TE formation. Jolley will be the receiver ala Novacek and Roland Williams will be the blocker. If I was the Raiders I'd cut Fargas lose as he is quite injury proned. I'd have a 3 man alternating running game with Wheatley, Hambrick, and Amos Zamaraoque (sp?). They'll be a punishing threesome just like the Eagles had last year. Gannon is a cancer in the locker room. I woulda been shocked if he would have lasted after June 1st even if they hadn't signed Collins. Most don't care for him as a person, and as he is getting older, he is less and less a positive contributer to the squad. And heck, even if Collins doesn't pan out, the Raiders have Tuiasosopo waiting in the wings. I would have been happy had they named him starter this year anyway. And getting rid of Gannon opens up the opportunity to sign Charles Woodson. A healthy and MOTIVATED Woodson = best CB in the league.

I would have been happy had they named him starter this year anyway. Isn't Tuiasosopo still injured? With the knee injury he sustained I think it takes 14 months of recovery and rehab time to get back. I could be wrong though. A healthy and MOTIVATED Woodson = best CB in the league That's debatable. Champ Bailey and Ty Law right now are better than Woodson. Until Woodson can come back and play a full season again to show how his skills are I'm going to question him. In fact I've seen talk of eventually moving him to Safety.
Guest jpclemmons Report post Posted May 24, 2004 Shannon Sharp retired and is joining the CBS pregame show looks like the pregame show with Shannon and Deon will be more exciting than the NFL game itself .

He has shown in the past that he can be the best in the game. Right now he isn't, BUt given a solid team around him and a hefty contract - he'll surely begin to concentrate on the game. Without an injury, he'll regain his earlier dominance at the position. And NO, CWood is not changing positions to Safety. Ray Buchanon, Ashomunga, and Schweigert are all pegged into those 2 positions behind Rod Woodson and Gibson.

KingPK 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2004 Just like to give this thread a bump since today is Cap Casualty day. Doesn't seem like there will be TOO many big names up for grabs this year, but Kurt Warner and Vinny Testaverde seem to be ready to go elsewhere and Kordell Stewart has the interest of the Ravens. Sass 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2004 I wouldn't be surprised to see Warner sign with Chicago instead of Kordell. I'm not sure who has the better O-line between the Giants and Bears but with Lovie Smith now the head coach of Da Bears, I could see him hooking back up with Warner. No I don't want Warner anywhere near Soldier Field.... unless as an opponent. The Bears need to develop their quarterback of the future, Rex Grossman, not just toss journeyman QBs on the team and hope for the best.
Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted June 1, 2004 Yeah, can someone PLEASE explain to me why Mariotti and all these other Chicago guys want every QB that becomes available to come to the Bears. I thought Grossman was impressive last year and is their franchise guy. So why do Bear fans want washed up QBs to stunt his growth?

MrRant 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2004 Seahawks Stadium renamed Qwest Field SEATTLE - Seahawks Stadium will soon be Qwest Field. Qwest Communications International Inc. of Denver announced Wednesday that it's buying the naming rights to the professional football stadium, which has operated without a corporate sponsor since it was completed in 2002. Terms of the agreement were not immediately revealed, pending approval from the state Public Stadium Authority. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, citing a source, reported Wednesday that the Seahawks Stadium deal is of shorter duration and "much bigger" than a $40 million deal for naming rights at Safeco Field, the neighboring Seattle Mariners baseball stadium. In 1998 Safeco Insurance Co. agreed to pay about $1.8 million a year, adjusted annually for inflation over the 20-year life of the contract. The 67,000-seat, open-air Seahawks Stadium occupies the site of the Kingdome, which was demolished in 2000, after serving as home for both pro teams from their inception in the mid-1970s. I was kinda hoping it would stay Seahawks Stadium without a corporate sponsor... but oh well.
MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2004 WINGS MILLS -- The Baltimore Ravens have agreed in principle to a one-year contract with former Pro Bowl quarterback Kordell Stewart for the veteran minimum of $760,000, general manager Ozzie Newsome said Wednesday evening. Stewart, 31, is a former Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears starter who was benched last year for Rex Grossman in Chicago. He had some of the best games of his career against the Ravens. Now, he's one injury away from becoming their starter. Stewart will back up starter Kyle Boller until Anthony Wright is healthy enough to regain his job after shoulder surgery. "Having the opportunity to compete against Kordell over the years, I think we have a very good history with him as a competitor," Newsome said. "After scouting him all those years we know what his strengths and weaknesses are. The second thing is the history of quarterbacks getting injured in this league is incredible. "As of tomorrow, he is one injury away from starting the first game against Cleveland. That’s just the nature of our business It’s good that we can have a person that has a veteran presence that’s been in that situation that we have a history with." WHAT THE HELL? Sass 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2004 Both Warner and Vinny got cut as was expected. Warner looks to be going to New York while Vinny apparently has interest from Dallas: ESPN.com news services ST. LOUIS -- Kurt Warner's storybook stay with the St. Louis Rams ended Tuesday, but he's unlikely to be out of work for long. ESPN.com has learned that Warner likely will sign with the New York Giants on Thursday or Friday, for a deal that will be worth around $3 million for 2004. The deal also could include an option for 2005. Warner's agent, Mark Bartelstein, worked on the deal with the Giants on Wednesday. The release of the two-time NFL MVP, who led the Rams to two Super Bowls, leaves Marc Bulger as the team's No. 1 quarterback. Bulger took over as the starter for good after Warner fumbled six times in last year's season opener against the Giants. Warner is expected to ease Eli Manning's transition to the NFL. Warner has not started and won a regular-season game since 2001, going 0-6 in 2002 and losing that one game last season. Bulger, who is 18-4 as the Rams regular-season starter, signed a four-year, $19.1 million contract in April as the first major sign that Warner would not be back. The team also signed backup Chris Chandler to a free-agent deal, and excused Warner from a three-day minicamp last month, all of which made Tuesday's news less than a blockbuster event. Mark Bartelstein, Warner's agent, said that Jay Zygmunt, the Rams' president of football operations, told him that the team had filed the necessary papers with the NFL office. "I think there's a lot of mixed emotions," Bartelstein said. "He's had so much success and such a great relationship with everyone in St. Louis. "It's an unbelievable chapter in his life and an unbelievable chapter in the NFL. To leave that, I think, is hard, but he's in the prime of his career." Bartelstein said four or five teams remained in the running for Warner's services, although most signs point to him signing with New York. He expected Warner, likely the biggest name to enter the second phase of free agency, would sign by the end of the week. "Teams are calling all the time," Bartelstein said. "Kurt and I kind of have a preference, where we think is the best fit, and we're going to see if we can get that worked out. "If we can, great, and if not, there's other choices." By signing less than two months from the start of training camp, Warner is unlikely to get any guarantees of playing time. From that standpoint, the Giants might be the best fit right now. "In June you're never going to find a place where someone says 'Our quarterback situation is wide open,'" Bartelstein said. "I also know if Kurt goes and plays the way he's capable of playing, and he helps the team win and win big it doesn't really matter who's waiting in the wings. "Kurt is going to be the guy." Warner, who turns 33 on June 22, led the Rams to Super Bowls in 1999 and 2001, but has been plagued by injuries since. By waiting until now to cut Warner, the Rams will spread their salary cap hit over two years instead of one. He'll cost them $4.6 million this year and $6.7 million in 2005. His contract called for a $9.5 million salary this year. Warner, undrafted out of Northern Iowa but an Arena League star, got the Rams' starting quarterback job in 1999 after Trent Green had a season-ending knee injury in the preseason. The Rams had endured a decade of losing seasons before Warner led the NFL with 41 touchdown passes, helping the team finish 13-3. Warner also was the Super Bowl MVP after a 23-16 victory over the Tennessee Titans. In 2001, Warner led the Rams to a 14-2 record, although St. Louis lost to the underdog New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. Nothing much has gone right for Warner since then. He missed half of the 2002 season with hand injuries, throwing only three touchdown passes with 11 interceptions. That gave Bulger his first chance to shine with victories in his first six career starts. Warner appeared to have regained his form last year with a strong preseason before his stumbling start in New York. Bulger never gave the Rams a reason to reconsider Warner the rest of the year. And Vinny... Associated Press NEW YORK -- Vinny Testaverde's six-year stay with the New York Jets is over. The Jets submitted the necessary paperwork to the NFL on Tuesday to release the 17-year veteran quarterback in a salary-cap move. By cutting him Tuesday, the Jets will save $1.5 million on this year's cap. In 2005, Testaverde will count for $4 million. Testaverde thanked the team for the opportunity to continue his career elsewhere in a statement released through his agent, Michael Azzarelli. The 40-year-old Testaverde is high on the Dallas Cowboys' list, where he would play for his former coach, Bill Parcells. Another team that could make a pitch is AFC East division rival New England. The Jets are expected to make the announcement official Wednesday. "I appreciate the Jets allowing me to move on with my career," Testaverde said. "I want to thank the organization for giving a chance to play in my hometown. It's been a great experience. We had some exciting moments on the field and memories I can take with me." Testaverde became one of the most popular players in team history, but made it clear last season he didn't want to stick around as a No. 3 quarterback. In 1998, he made the Pro Bowl and guided the Jets to the AFC title game with Parcells at the helm. But Testaverde tore his Achilles' tendon in the first game of the next season. In 2001, the first year under coach Herman Edwards, Testaverde led the Jets to a 10-6 record and a wild-card playoff berth. But after that, his age began to show. And it was clear he didn't fit in with the West Coast-style offense used by offensive coordinator Paul Hackett. Testaverde lost his starting job to Chad Pennington early in the 2002 season, and Pennington led the Jets from a 2-5 start into the playoffs. When Pennington broke his wrist last summer, Testaverde took over and went 2-5 as a starter before Pennington returned. Despite the losing record, Testaverde became the ninth quarterback in NFL history to pass for over 40,000 yards last season. Going into this season, second-year player Brooks Bollinger will be the backup. Also Tuesday, the Jets decided they wouldn't retain the rights to defensive back Jamie Henderson, who sustained head injuries in a motorcycle accident near Atlanta on April 3. KingPK 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2004 It's official, Kurt Warner is a Giant. Hmm, Warner, a green Eli Manning, or the Bachelor. Whatta decision. Man, outside McNabb (and even HE is becoming a bit iffy in my eyes), and assuming Testaverde signs with Dallas, the NFC East has the biggest collection of mediocre QBs in the league. Terrell Buckley may be re-signing with the Pats after spending one year in Miami.
MrRant 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 New England Patriots: Cornerback Terrell Buckley signed Tuesday with the Patriots. The 12-year veteran played a total of 31 games with the team in 2001 and 2002. He spent last season with Miami, for whom he also had played earlier in his career. Buckley, who ranks third among active players with 47 interceptions, also has played for Green Bay and Denver. He was taken by the Packers with the fifth overall pick of the 1992 draft. The Patriots cut running back Frank Moreau, fullback Philip Crosby and long snapper Sean McDermott. Tennessee Titans: Three-year veteran wide receiver Eddie Berlin, one of the last restricted free agents to reach contract terms, has re-signed with the Tennessee Titans. Berlin, 26, signed a one-year contract for the standard restricted free agent qualifying offer of $628,000. But the deal also includes an option for 2005, at the discretion of the Titans, which must be exercised next March. If the club exercises the option, Berlin will receive a $600,000 base salary, with $300,000 of it fully guaranteed. Should the Titans decline the option, Berlin would immediately be an unrestricted free agent. The option year is unusual for a restricted free agent because it provides the team the right to preclude the player from becoming an unrestricted veteran. A fifth-round choice in the 2001 draft, Berlin has played sparingly from scrimmage in his Titans tenure, and has been used principally on special teams. But with the trade of Justin McCareins to the New York Jets early in the offseason, Berlin should have the chance to move up the depth chart. In three seasons, the former Northern Iowa standout has appeared in 41 games but has yet to register his first start. He has four receptions for 92 yards and one touchdown. Berlin also has returned 30 kickoffs for a 19.5-yard average. Arizona Cardinals: With injuries thinning the body count at the position, the Arizona Cardinals have signed a pair of undrafted free agent cornerbacks. Tyrone Sanders of TCU and Villanova's Clarence Curry both signed one-year contracts for the rookie minimum salary of $230,000. The two certainly are long shots to make the roster but, given the lack of ambulatory corners right now, they figure to get considerable time on the field. Veteran cornerback Duane Starks, who missed the entire 2003 season after suffering a severe knee injury in the preseason, just recently returned to the field. Renaldo Hill, who was arguably the Cardinals' best cornerback in the absence of Starks, is recovering from wrist surgery that took place last month. Sanders, who earned All-American honors in track during his four seasons at TCU, had 11 passes defensed as a senior. Curry started all 11 games for Villanova and he posted 36 tackles, one interception and 10 passes defensed. The Cardinals also signed rookie free-agent quarterback Chris Lewis to a one-year contract. Lewis, who started 19 of the 30 games he played with Stanford, finished his college career seventh in touchdown passes (31) and eighth in yards passing (4,326) and total offense (4,328). A native of Long Beach, Calif., Lewis set a record at Long Beach Polytechnic by throwing for 107 TDs in his career there. Philadelphia Eagles: Defensive end Clyde Simmons, who hasn't played in the NFL since the 2000 season, officially announced his retirement Tuesday after signing a ceremonial contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, the franchise with which he began his 15-year career. Simmons, 39, played the first eight seasons of his career with the Eagles, recording 76 ½ sacks and earning two Pro Bowl invitations, while playing on a front four that included fellow end Reggie White. In addition to the Eagles (1986-93), Simmons also played for Arizona (1994-95), Jacksonville (1996-97), Cincinnati (1998) and Chicago (1998-2000). In 15 seasons, he never missed a game, and he finished his career with 121½ sacks. Minnesota Vikings: The Minnesota Vikings announced the signing on Tuesday of free agent linebacker Keith Newman, who started 11 games for the Atlanta Falcons last season. The announcement came a day after coach Mike Tice said he was concerned about his team's lack of depth at linebacker. "One injury, and we can be in for some problems," he said at Monday's developmental camp practice. Newman, 27, who will be playing for his third team in three seasons, has started 52 of the 64 games he has played. While the five-year veteran is more familiar with the strongside and weakside positions, he may be asked to learn the middle spot. The depth concern was exacerbated over the weekend, when linebackers E.J. Henderson and Mike Nattiel were arrested along with tight end Steve Farmer after a fight outside a downtown Minneapolis nightclub. Prosecutors did not file charges in the case on Tuesday, but didn't rule out the possibility in the future. -- Associated Press Len Pasquarelli is a senior NFL writer for ESPN.com.
