Video and DVD guide books

It's never really occurred to me to seriously use them as a decision to rent films, but I might start, even if the writers' opinions sometimes differ from mine.

The books are fun to flip through, checking out your favourite (or least favourite) films, and seeing what the experts have to say about them.

The one I currenly have is 'Video & DVD Guide 2003' by Mick Martin and Marsha Porter. Not bad, but it's focused on only what you can acquire somehow, not including films that wouldn't be released to a video store.

Do you ever use these books, and if so, what do you think of them?

I've flipped through the Leonard Maltin ones a few time. I don't necessarily look at them for opinions, though. I'm really content and know what I like, and I don't care what anyone elses thinks. But I do like them as a quick reference as to the plot and such.

^ What he said. I usually keep the latest Maltin guide around, more for quick summary, year of release, who was in it and such. I'm not one to listen to critics... though if I did, I find Roger Ebert's taste to be more in line with mine than Leonard Maltin's. I find his book less easy to use though.

A lot of my movie reccommendations are actually based on celebrity endorsements and stuff I read in interviews. I'd be much more willing to see something someone that I am a fan of, say Quentin Tarantino, than what Ebert would say.

I had a DVD one, but really, it was a bad purchase. I never really used it and didn't find it to be of much help. I found that I could get the same information (and more) for free around the 'net.

Yeah, but they're never really that expensive, handy and good for a flip-through.

My friend has something on this idea for anime,. but the person who did it is as jaded as can be and doesn't seem to like anything. Everything I looked up in it was said to be God awful, and while it is true Bubblegum Crisis in incomplete(I haven't seen Crash), it isn;t as bad as I recall it making that series out to be. Mind you I'm talking about the original Bubblegukm Crisis, not 2040.
