Red Baron 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2004 Lyrics aside, there's some awesome music itself and song construction Like what? The same tired power chords and drop D stuff everyone else is doing, or the turntable wicky-wickies and samples that everyone else is doing, or the basic verse/chorus/verse structure? That's not special. High school bands can do that. The fact that they were teenagers when this started proves that. They've just got a hype machine behind them. If anything, that album is negative five stars, in every objective sense it can be viewed. God that band is awful. Yeah, but they were a step above the rest in doing it. Above what? Being as shittier than any other band currently present at the time, and is still is now. These albums being released in the past 5-10 years that had the commercial success, might not be going down as the most pinnicle albums ever. Hybrid Theory had tons of airplay, got a good success, but its not going to be held as Dark Side of the Moon or Revolver, or even Number of the Beast and Blizzard of Ozz. Linkin Park will be just another one of those fad bands that we will look back and realize that there are many idiots out there buying the music, and realizing 15 years from now, what a mistake I bought buying the album. They aren't new, or revolutionary. They are on the pop-wagon mobile, and just waiting to get tossed off.
skullman80 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2004 Linkin Park is one of the worst bands to come around in the past 5 years or so...they are what is wrong with muisc today... It's a shame that there bands like them get commercial success when you have bands with loads more talent...Shadows Fall, Machine Head, God Forbid, Lamb of God, KSE etc....that get no where near the commercial success when they are 100X the band that Linkin Park every hopes to be... Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted May 18, 2004 skullman, I'm not disputing the fact that some of the above bands deserve more notice. All I'm trying to say that is that while almost everyone of the Linkin Park 'Im sick of my parents' Hard Rock genre were pretty much copying eachother trying more to fit in rather than make an impact, Linkin Park were a step above the rest in quality and they actually had a bit of respect for the work that they were doing. But as I said, would I go to a show? No. Would I buy their latest album now? No, I doubt it. And would I buy the debut album of every single other generic Hard Rock rip-off that gets a videoclip on morning television and has a fanbase consisting of 80% screaming girls? Fuck no I wouldn't. But the whole genre is insipid, for the technical reasons Agent offered above and the general discontent everyone else has justly levied. The finest shit you've ever taken still shouldn't be cast in bronze. If you want angry whining, just pick up a copy of The Downward Spiral or Broken. Trent Reznor did that whole thing well before the nu-metal nonsense, and though "God is dead and no one cares/If there is a hell I'll see you there" isn't going to win any writing accolades, he at least created some weird-ass, provocative soundscapes and crafted a fgoodnumber of genuinely excellent songs out of them too. I want my angry whining with spinning pig's-heads and mutilation, not with Gundams and weird CGI flowers, thank you very much.

Respect for the work? More like backed by a major record corporation, giving them tons of money to over-produce their albums, with no raw sound what so ever. Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted May 19, 2004 I'm not trying to say that Linkin Park created some whole new genre of music and they used different backbeats, wickie-wickies, etc. to everyone else, but I feel that the emotion in the songs combined with their musical ability took it to a whole new level, rendering them unique, however much money they had in them. But each to their own. As for The Black Album, I don't know if you could call it a "classic" at this point, but it's a damn fucking good record by what used to be a good band. The Metal Maniac 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2004 And most Black Sabbath stuff has the Tony Iommi instrumental and what not. Dude, you say that like it's a bad thing. I love the instrumentals on Black Sabbath. And IB, I hate rap, but even I'm pretty damned sure they ain't talking about Metallica, and I'm also pretty sure you are. Didn't like, Jay-Z or somebody release an album of the same name?
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted May 19, 2004 In a couple of years, people will be calling the Black Album a classic. That is unless Jay-Z slimes his way otu of retirement...which is pretty much bound to happen.
Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted May 19, 2004 I'm not a rap fan either, and I was talking about Metallica - sorry, misinterpretation.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted May 19, 2004 Even then, how is Hybrid Theory, or any of the other insipid generic pop albums you've listed *****? Is it just a case of liking everything and making excuses for it? I'd say star ratings where albums are concerned are pretty silly anyway. Especially when they're used in a wrestling context. Doing crap better than most people doesn't make something perfect.

JJMc 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2004 Collective Soul- Self Titled oh COME ON!!!!!! I stood idly by while people pimped Green Day as ***** stars, but this? Bah. Who cares? It's totally an opinion thing. There's a few subpar songs, but I think everything else is really great. And for the record, I loved Dookie too, so fuckin' a. Later-Jim A ***** album isn't subjective, bub...its all in the pudding. Collective Soul just sin't very good. They could even be considered to be the first of the MANY Pearl Jam-clone bands manufactored during the later stages of the 90's onwards to today. Alright, fuck it. Nothing's perfect, but what the band offered us was worth ***** - if they'd offered anymore, it would have been even more worthy of that rating.
The Metal Maniac 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2004 If what they gave you was worth ***** out of ***** stars (it wasn't), then it can't have been any better, by definition.
Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted May 20, 2004 If what they gave you was worth ***** out of ***** stars (it wasn't), then it can't have been any better, by definition. That's a tough one - but I think that maybe one weaker song doesn't drag it down from being worth ***** when you consider the rest of the album and that maybe one weaker song is not weak, just weaker in comparison to the rest. Well, I hope that you are. But if I were you, I wouldn't be, because I DON'T LISTEN TO LINKIN PARK, I DON'T GO TO THEIR OFFICIAL WEBSITE (IF THEY HAVE ONE), I DON'T COLLECT THEIR RECORDS, I DON'T DOWNLOAD MUSIC FROM THEM, I BELIEVE THAT THEY HAVE ONE ***** ALBUM, AND THAT'S IT. And for the record, I don't have the album in my collection, so it probably doesn't belong in here. Will I add it to my collection? Well, it's damn good, so maybe. Geez, some people are just fucking morons...
The Metal Maniac 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2004 I DON'T LISTEN TO LINKIN PARK That's obviously a lie. And if you're calling 1 out of 3 records (one of which was just a re-make of some older crap, wasn't it?) *****, then don't get your panties in a bunch when people make comments like "idiots who listen to Linkin Park". You obviously do listen to them to some extent (or else you would never have heard whichever shitty album it is of theirs you think is *****), and you're calling 1/3 of all the material they've ever done among the greatest achievements in music. No matter how much you'd like to claim that you don't like or listen to Linkin Park (because that's so cool) you obviously both like and listen to them to some extent. Just admit it, for fuck's sake. What I meant by not listening to them is that they're not a band that I regularly listen to, because I think that majority of their music (the aforementioned remix album and Meteora) is not a great deal special. Their debut album was their best and main achievement. I think that we should stop this argument now, because it's just going to keep on going. Note: The capitals didn't really signify that I was pissed, just that I was setting the record straight.
