KingPK Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 (edited) Last full week of games in May. Let's get at em'. Since we're at about the 2 month mark in the season (and I need something to talk about on off days), who would you consider the "Out of the Gate MVP"? Edited May 24, 2004 by Kingpk
Bruiser Chong Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 Scott Rolen. So far this season, there's been no one better with RISP. Hard to say if it'll hold up, but he's posting some very impressive numbers, leading the majors in RBIs and basically being the one who can usually get that hit to drive in a run. Pujols will come around, even though he's "slumping" right now.
Bored Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 Tim Hudson vs. Curt Schilling on Tuesday. MVPs to this point A.L.: Melvin Mora N.L.: Lance Berkman My predictions for who will win the MVP awards at the end of the season are Vladimir Guerrero and Jim Thome.
NoCalMike Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 Go Oakland. Should be a huge series, and it should be an excellent test for a HOT A's team. Hudson is pitching well so far this season, but head to head with Schilling has to favor Schilling since this will be his first time through the A's lineup and first time meetings almost ALWAYS favor the pitcher.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 I predict Oakland to take 2 of 3 from my Sawx. Derek Lowe pitches on Wed so the Oakland offense will be on fire, and Mulder pitches on Thursday...with the way he's been pitching as of late I can't see the Red Sox offense getting much off of him(even if they have given him alot of trouble in the past.). That being said thus far the AL MVP is Manny Ramirez. I don't just say that because I'm a Sox fan but it seems if he's slumping the whole offense is slumping. NL MVP thus far is Scott Rolen as somebody previously said.
alfdogg Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 *points to custom title* P.S. The preceding is not an MVP vote.
Bruiser Chong Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 Damn right it's not. A .237 average doesn't exactly put you up there in the MVP race.
Fuzzy Dunlop Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 Kerry Wood was feeling more pain last night, and is going for a bone scan this morning. FUCK. Although, according to Hendry and Rothschild, both of whom have become very suspect in my mind, this is just some minor thing, and they told Wood to tell them if he felt anything at all during his simulated game. Sosa and Prior both expected back next week. Excellent. And finally, what the hell is up with the Cincinatti Reds?
Bruiser Chong Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 They haven't had any injury problems...yet. When they do, and considering the problems they've had in recent years, I've gotta believe it can't be far off, things will settle down. Until then, as long as they're sweeping the Astros, I've got no complaints.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 They haven't had any injury problems...yet. Brandon Larson, Austin Kearns, I'm sure there are a few more. It just seems their no-name pitching staff is getting the job done. The Reds or Rangers could very well be this year's Marlins/Angels Cinderella Story
Guest OctoberBlood Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 John Vander Wal, Brandon Larson and Austin Kearns, and Jason LaRue has had the biggest, longest injuries (spent time on the DL). Vander Wal hit 2 HR in an extended spring training game last night, and will start a rehab assignment in Louisville most likely very soon. Larson is on a rehab assignment in Chattanooga. Kearns has been hitting very well (.353) since his return. Casey has missed a few games [3 vs. the Dodgers] because of a thumb injury. Freel, and Castro has missed a few games over nagging injuries, or problems - but they're fine now (Freel may be at 90%). Why are the Reds doing so well? Timely hitting by certain players, and very good pitching. The offense hasn't even been it's best this year, and has only played a few games with the complete - supposed lineup (DLO/Larkin/Jr/Kearns/Dunn/Casey/Larson/LaRue). The bench is full of weak, not so good hitters (atleast until one of the best pinch hitters returns), and yet - they've still gotten the job done. Paul Wilson (6-0, 3.59) and John Reidling (2-0, 0.41, 20 gms) has been huge on the pitching side. Harang, Acevedo, and Lidle has been solid, but inconsistant when it comes to quailty starts. Though, Lidle leads the league with 3 complete games. Getting rid of Jimmy Haynes has been a blessing. Todd Van Poppel has a 3.45 era in 3 starts this season. Certainly surprise players stepping up in big roles. The Reds have a solid TEAM. They don't have to rely on one or two guys. They have big role players, and clutch hitters. Which has ultimately led to the best record in the nation league (along with the cubs) after about 2 months. I still think the Cubs and Astros are the teams to beat in the NL Central, but as I said before the season, alot of people are gonna be surprised with how good the Reds can play. I think they'll be in it, some way or another, til the end. As someone else said, I don't think many people expected the Angels or Marlins to play the way they did in their respective great seasons either.
Guest Salacious Crumb Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 That and Freel can play any non-pitching position on the field pretty effectively. Kruk pissed me off on Baseball Tonight though. He completely shit all over the Reds just because he doesn't know who the pitchers are. What a lazy piece of crap. If your supposed to be an expert why not research them instead of looking like a moron.
Guest OctoberBlood Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 I stopped watching those bafoons a long time ago. They're jokes.
alfdogg Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 They haven't had any injury problems...yet. Brandon Larson, Austin Kearns, I'm sure there are a few more. It just seems their no-name pitching staff is getting the job done. The Reds or Rangers could very well be this year's Marlins/Angels Cinderella Story What about the Angels themselves? Last I saw they had the best record in the majors.
Guest webmasterofwrestlegame Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 They still do and are doing so without Glaus, Erstad, Anderson, Salmon, and Donnelly. Also, rumours Boone is coming into play 3rd Base are mounting. Not sure what to make of that.
Bruiser Chong Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 The Angels are running into the same problems that took them out of contention last season and I've got to believe that the same is going to happen again this year, if some of these guys don't get back. Seeing as how a lot of these injuries are serious, that may not be possible. And bone scans of Kerry Wood's arm came back negative, so he should be back within the next three weeks.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 Brandon Webb sure didn't help me out today
Fuzzy Dunlop Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 So of course with Prior coming back, we're now gonna be without Wood. Substitute one ace for another. Prior IS still expected the first weekend of June, against the Pirates, right? No surprise setbacks there?
HarleyQuinn Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 If Prior comes back, I'm a happy man(fantasy wise). Tonight could be a decent slugfest, who's pitching for Houston? Jose Acevedo's pitching for Cincy
Guest FrigidSoul Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 He could have at least shut them out, picked up a shitload of Ks and then had the bullpen blow it for him. I would have been happy with that fantasy performance.
Guest Salacious Crumb Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 Tim Redding is pitching for Houston.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 9 more for Griffey. He just tied himself with Fred McGriff on the home-run list with a mammoth blast to dead center.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 Shit, I thought Dunn had got all of that one
Guest OctoberBlood Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 Damn. Just missed it. Just a few more inches.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Isn't it somewhat silly to point to the Reds' pitching as a success when they are 12th in the league in runs allowed?
Mik Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 I'm happy for Griffey. I hope he returns to being of the best players in baseball. I still have Ken Griffey Jr. Seatle Mariners posters on the wall of my childhood bedroom. It's fun to see whenever I go and visit my mom.
Guest OctoberBlood Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Isn't it somewhat silly to point to the Reds' pitching as a success when they are 12th in the league in runs allowed? Can't stand people like you. If you actually follow a team, you'd know what I mean about the pitching. Not just looking from the outside in. Overall numbers do not tell the complete story. When the Reds get QS, they are 16-9. Jimmy Haynes and his 16 runs in 15 innings is no longer on this team. That takes the ERA about 20 points. Wagner, Norton and Reith has also imploded the ERA. After a few bad outings, the Reds pitching has been really good. And yes, ultimately has been the reason why this team is winning.
