This Week in Baseball

Recommended Posts

There was some rumour last night that Carlos Delgado was off to the Dodgers for Encarnacion and a pitching prospect after they pulled him out of the game when he hurt his knee, but everyone's denying it. Apparently there was another rumour during spring training that had Delgado going to LA for Gagne, but last night was the first I'd heard of it.

I don't get that trade for the Jays, unless they stick Encarnacion at 1st or as the DH, since they've already got more than enough outfielders either already in the majors or on their way up in the near future.

It really makes no sense unless they are getting Greg Miller or Edwin Jackson as the prospect, and Encarnacion is throw in just to get rid of some money on the Dodgers part.

That deal would have me worried though, as Miller, IIRC, is coming off surgery and Jackson's control has seemingly gone to hell this year. In 46 2/3 IP he has 32 Ks and 22 walks, 5 hit batters and 3 wild pitches.

A couple notes for tonight's games from Rotoworld.com

- Chad Allen will be recalled for Class AAA Oklahoma today to take the roster spot of Kevin Mench.

He will get the odd start against left-handed pitching and will likely start this evening against Scott Schoeneweis.

- The Rangers will recall Gary Matthews Jr. from Triple-A Oklahoma today.

He will likely start tonight in center field against left-hander Scott Schoeneweis, and platoon with left-handed hitting Laynce Nix for the next few weeks at the very least. Matthews may make a nice short term pickup in most fantasy league for teams not worried about batting average.

- Brian Jordan, who will be placed on the disabled list today, may be facing season-ending knee surgery.

He has flown to Atlanta to have the doctor who performed off season surgery on his left knee re-examine him. The Rangers are hopeful that with more rest, Jordan can return to action sometime before the All-Star break. We are not as hopeful.

- After receiving treatment on his hamstring muscle yesterday, Kenny Lofton is confident he will be able to play this evening.

Manager Joe Torre seems to believe Lofton will be a player tonight as well. Keep him active.

- Damain Rolls (cheek and sternum contusions) is still being evaluated, and may not be available for tonight's game.

Keep him on the bench until he returns to action.

It'll be interesting to see if Matthews Jr.(.242/.324/.371) produces at all for the Rangers, even in a platoon role with Nix. Chad Allen could be productive if he can lower the K's and raise the BB's. He hit .277 in 137 games in 1999 for the Twins. Losing Brian Jordan will sting a bit but the Rangers should be fine so long as they don't lose Young or Soriano.

Note to Al: Apparently Brian Morris is a non-existant player, didn't show up at all in a player search on baseballamerica.com

Cole Hamels returned from injury last Thursday, and K'd 6 batters in just 3 innings in a A game. No hits or walks. It won't take long for Hamels to reach AA. Hamels has yet to surrender a home run in his professional career.

He's gotta be a misprint. Nothing in John Sickels' book, nothing in Baseball Prospectus, nothing from Google, and Minor League Baseball's web site has no record of him.

In the search for Brian Morris I was led to some team named the Englewood Marauders. Where I there is nothing stating whether he is a pitcher or position player. He was named to the Irish national team, however. Unfortunately this is for a softball team.

I could see the Blue Jays trading Delgado for Encarnacion so long as the Dodgers ate the rest of the contract. Of course Delgado has a no trade clause too so he can nix the whole thing.

That being said it appears Richie Sexon's season is over. He's going to need surgery on his shoulder and it will take 6months to recover afterwards.

Red Sox 3B Bill Mueller is out for 6 weeks. He's having his knee scoped.

What happened to Hudson? He looks like crap tonight.

Also, where the hell is everybody?

Edit: 8 more for Griffey now

JUNIOR just SMOKES #11! (8 more to go!) after they walked Casey to pitch to him. Teams need to learn the kid is back.

What a sweet swing on that no doubter. 4-1 Reds.

The Dodgers can't eat the contract. New owner = less payroll.

The new owner has some land in Boston he's trying to sell. Its enough land in a financial district where it could net him $150mill. He's been trying to sell it to John Henry to build a new Fenway on but the Red Sox owners would rather just continue to renovate Fenway and somehow expand the park.

Never mind the no money thing then. Delgado would come to LA and hit very well, but it's his salary that I would be concerned about still.

His contract's up after this year and he's not going to make as much money, anyway. His salary won't be much of a concern for a large market team like LA.

Manny just killed a baseball. He normally destroys lefties, so having him face Chris Hammond who throws the ball 80mph on average was just unfair.

9-0 Boston in the 5th and Curt Schilling looks extremely bored waiting to go back out on the mound.

Harley, what do you think of Youks so far? Money player huh? I saw him play plenty of times when he was with the SeaDogs. He just plain killed their mini Green Monster replica when he wasn't walking.

Is it just more or is walking Casey to get to Griffey NOT ever working? I don't care how hot a hitter is, you don't walk him to get to a guy like Griffey.

And Zambrano just doesn't have it tonight, but has managed to only give up one run. Unfortunately, Oswalt is pitching pretty well, so that may be enough.

Which is another example of how great the current reds lineup is right now.

Nine hits, four walks, in four innings? Yikes that is a disturbingly bad performance by Hudson and really out of no where. I can't actually see the game because of those lame blackout rules even though I don't live in the Bay Area and can't see the game on a local channel. Oh well good night to be blacked out.

Manny just killed a baseball.

Manny doesn't get any other kind of homerun. Hell, hits hits are always killed.

I like Youkilis, reminds me of Mark Bellhorn somewhat actually(The getting hits, walks, low K's). Ironically earlier around I want to say 2 PM or so ET time Billy Beane came on WEEI(local New England radio station) and mentioned that the A's had originally drafted Bellhorn and used every chance they had to get him playing time but in the end they had to let him go...speaking of which, Bellhorn cranks out a 2 run HR

*marks over Bellhorn hitting Pesky's pole for a homer* Those are my favorite kind of Fenway homers. 11-2 Red Sox and Oakland just looks like a shell of its former self.

Also it appears the Reds are giving Danny Graves a night off since they brought in Todd Jones to save the game tonight. How's he suppose to beat Thigpen's record if they're giving him nights off?

it was only a Three run lead...

Graves needs about 8 runs before we get comfortable.
