Guest Choken One Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 As we all have noticed over the past eight weeks, Raw has become very friendly with the concept of random tag team matches using many variations of the "Raw 10"... Who finds this a GOOD thing or perhaps finds it a BAD thing? Every week, at least one match on Raw tends to hit ***+ levels...Thus I can't complain.
RavishingRickRudo Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Would it kill them not to do a hot tag in every single fucking match? They all blend together now. It's getting really old, IMO. I LOVE the fact that they have so many guys to use, but jesus christ, all these tag matches and it's not doing a THING for the tag division. Let's get more creative here, mmmkay?
Guest Choken One Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 The fun part is thinking of a combo they haven't used yet I'm just waiting for the inevitable 18 man Tag Match Benoit, Shawn, Edge, Jericho, Benjamin, Eugene, Hurricane, Tajiri and Matt Vs Triple H, Orton, Flair, Batistia, Kane, Christian, Tomko, Cade and Nitro.
razazteca Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Remove the last 3 from each team and you got a War Games/Survivor Series match.
Guest ManKinnd Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 That wouldn't leave many other people to fill up Raw. Yes, the hot tag on *every* tag match gets repetitive and bland. Why not just do a sprint once, with constant tags, and have it run under ten minutes? It'd be darn refreshing.
Guest Choken One Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 If we're doing war games it HAS to be Benoit, Shawn, Benjamin, Jericho Vs Trips, Orton, Christian and Batistia. Shawn, Jericho, Orton and X will Make eddy's efforts at JD look like child's play.

You could just have a 45 minute match...Have various Skits leading up to the match...A couple ladies matches and voila...you have your show there.\

Guest Choken One Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 I like the traditional 4 vs 4 format. and I think flair on the outside watching Orton get busted and screaming in agony trying to break in would be great.
Guest Trivia247 Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 the thrown together tag teams Batistia & Flair Batistia & Orton Benoit & Edge they get the main event spots but more established tag teams La Resistance Rosey & Hurricane seem to be still low carding it.
iggymcfly Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Rosey and Hurricane should be disbanded, not pushed.
Guest Choken One Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 All the random tag teams make me long for the old days of LETHAL LOTTERY! Seriously...Take 24 of the current raw roster...split it into 12 teams and Have Six Matches and then have a 12 man battle bowl!

I actually think that would be fun and a slightly fresh item in today's product
Guest Loss Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 The hot tag doesn't bother me because it's the best way to put sympathy on the babyface and while it may be an old story, it's still the best one they can tell. However, I'm tired of obligatory commercial breaks in matches. They always time them horribly, the match is always at a completely different point when we return and there's no need for it.
nl5xsk1 Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 The hot tag is a very old-school way of generating heat in a tag match ... at this point, it's part of the "recipe" of a tag match, and to me, it wouldn't make sense to NOT have one. It'd be like having a match without a near-fall ... they're wicked predictable, but they're part of the package. I like the traditional 4 vs 4 format. Isn't 5-on-5 the traditional format for both Survivor Series AND Wargames? I remember the slogan for the earliest SS was "Teams of 5 Struggle to Survive". And the earliest Wargames that I remember had the Horsemen plus JJ Dillon (for a total of 5) vs. Koloff, Dusty, Road Warriors plus Ellering.

The problem is that a good part of the time it's not built up to the hot tag well enough. The great tag matches are when the hot tag actually gets the crowd really into the match.
Guest Loss Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 I should probably clarify something. There is more than one way to skin a cat, and AJPW has taken a differing approach to tag matches at times and it has been a major success. So I don't think we should necessarily say that a tag match HAS to have a hot tag to be effective, but all of my favorite US tags definitely contain that element. When the in-ring storytelling in WWE starts to match the booking and each takes gigantic leaps forward, I think we can start looking at expanding the formula, but the company is not advanced enough for that at this point. Only now is WWE at least figuring out the right spot for everyone on the card, which was a major stopping point in previous years. The next step is to make the most of everyone in those positions and get the maximum out of every wrestler. I hesitate to say WWE should expand beyond the basics when they're still relearning those very basics.
RavishingRickRudo Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 THEY DO IT IN EVERY MATCH! EVERY SINGLE MATCH! And they have like 2 tag matches a night. Jesus fucking Christ, it gets BORING. It's not hard to change it up, but they keep falling back on it, and if they overuse it and the fans stop popping for it, it won't be there for them to fall back on.
Guest Loss Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Maybe the problem is that they shouldn't do more than one tag a show more than it is the structure of the match. It seems the long match almost every week is a tag match when Benoit should be defending the world title in those 15+ minute segments instead of otherwise.

The only reason why I didn't bring up the AJPW is because I didn't really feel as if they EVER would work a tag match that way.
Guest ManKinnd Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 I loved the cruiser tag tournament in WCW, and looking back I see that it was most likely because they abandoned all the hot-tag crap and just wrestled as a team. What's wrong with that?
RavishingRickRudo Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Or they could do Tag Squashes and actually build the division rather than invest in teams that have a 2 month shelf life. Or just have the _Face team_ dominate the _heel team_ because usually the face team is _better_ than the heel team so it would make more sense for _them_ to dominate. But that might mean that the heel team might get heat on them! OH NO~! Can't risk that! That might mean the WWE has faith in their face team! Why, that would also mean the fans would choose who to cheer rather than drool over themselves when McMavlov rings his bells. But the 1 super-duper-tag match (either between the champions and challengers, or between two challenging teams looking for #1 contendership) would not drive me insane. Watching 2 identical matches (sometimes 3) gets annoying.
Guest Loss Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 They didn't abandon the "hot tag crap" actually. That's been the structure of any US tag match ever that wasn't a Texas Tornado match. I agree with Rudo that it can be overused, but there's nothing wrong with the formula itself.
Guest ManKinnd Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 The matches were mostly 5 minute spotfests, diving out of the ring and using your partner as a weapon. I don't recall there being "heat segments" at any time.
RavishingRickRudo Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Typical WWE Tag Match: *Face gets best of Heel* *Heel brings face into corner and/or cheats to get the advantage* *Face comes back a bit and makes the semi-hot tag* *Face #2 gets on a semi-hot streak before Heels cheat (again) and start working a bodypart/headlock which goes NOWHERE* *Faces pander to the crowd for the hot tag* *Wrestlers tease a hot tag but then gets cut off* *repeat as many times as necessary* *Hot tag* *Clean House* *Finishing Sequence*
TheBigSwigg Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 I think it would be smart of them to bring in...TAG TEAMS. They keep signing guys, then bringing them up as singles stars. Think of the tag teams they split from OVW: Conway & Dinsmore, and Seven & Bane. Then the guys they brought in from OVW in tag teams that weren't that way: Bashams. Hmm.... Anyhow, yes, I believe the hot tag is getting annoying as it's so overused and so predictable in every match. Rudo's formula is the same formula for every single tag match, even if they're booked back to back. It's boring and retarded.
King Cucaracha Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 I still remember the days of 10 vs 10 SS matches, with 5 TEAMS on each side. And by teams, that meant matching ring-gear (9 times out of 10), tag names, tag finishers and the lack of WACKY TAG PARTNERS WHO HATE EACH OTHER~ like nowadays. La Resistance is the only team on Raw that fits that bill. Tag Heaven it ain't.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 When La Resistance win the tag titles this week on Raw, this "great tag team period" will end.
Guest wildpegasus Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 I must be missing this great tag team period.
