Guest cobainwasmurdered Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 I voted Liberal, mostly because this riding is a 2 horse race between them and the Conservatives so there's no point in voting for either the NDP or Greens (the only other 2 parties with candidates running here). Same exact thing with me Tim.
dubq Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 I voted Liberal, mostly because this riding is a 2 horse race between them and the Conservatives so there's no point in voting for either the NDP or Greens (the only other 2 parties with candidates running here). I voted Green. Hell, even if they won't win, it's still money in their pocket for their next campaign. In this election, a party that gets 2% of the national vote or 5% in one of their ridings gets $1.75 for every vote.
CanadianChris Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 I went Liberal, because my candidate is a good one, and she needs some help. Liberals leading in 100 ridings, vs. 42 Conservative. Wow. Was anyone else stoked when the Marxist-Leninists were leading in one riding?
treble Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 This is a little frustrating. I live in the riding that was the closest in the country (the Liberal won by 55 votes and there needed to be a recount), but I've been watching Global's coverage and they haven't talked about it at all. CBC's mentioned it a few times and the drop-in from Ottawa on CTV has talked about it, but Christ, you'd think with what was expected to be a close election they'd want to pay attention to what would be a close race.
treble Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 Well, I think the Conservative dude won here. It's not really surprising, but since it looks like the Liberals are going to win at least a minority it would have been nice to have our MP have a place in the government.
Highland Posted June 29, 2004 Author Report Posted June 29, 2004 So far it looks like the Liberals have a large minority. I'm sorely disappointed in the electorate right now; Martin now knows he can get away with anything, since we refused to punish his party for 11 years of corruption. Thanks for nothing, Ontario.

I'm expected to vote for a party that will unilaterally repeal our freedoms, or for a party that will bankrupt the country? No thanks.
Kahran Ramsus Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 Have I ever mentioned how much I fucking hate Toronto? The Liberals have ruined the country in the past 11 years and are a bunch of criminals that were caught red-handed, but Ontario and especially Toronto gave them another governement. This is a dark day for Canada.
Tawren Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 Talk about a far different outcome than I expected. I thought it would be way closer than that.
Kahran Ramsus Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 Sad to say, but this result may have just lost Quebec. The increase of support for the serperatist movement is a direct result of AdScam.
pappajacks Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 Quebecers punished the Liberals big time.

Hey, as a province we've been fucked over by the NDP and are rather distrustful of the Reform party, so what did you expect? Reform will get their votes back out west anyways.
LaParkaMarka Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 I think we all thought it would be closer. I am so glad we won't have a Conservative/Bloc government. That would have been bizarre and frightening. The Marxist/Leninists led a riding? I'm suprised they got more than 10 votes.
Hogan Made Wrestling Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 I am very pleased with these results if they hold up and the NDP holds the balance of power.

The current government has done an outstanding job of that, haven't they? One Conservative MP made a personal remark and everyone painted the party with his views. And as far as bankrupting the county goes: Where is our money? Lost in a failed gun registry, the HRDC scandal and Adscam. Yep, Canada deserves the Liberals, and they definately deserve to lose even more money and services to being stupid enough to reward the Liberals yet again.
pappajacks Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 The conservatives would have easily won this election if they had a leader from Quebec or a Bernard Lord type. It's clear that Ontario, Quebec and maritimes will not support western right wing politicians. Manning, Stockwell and Harper have learned that. If Bernard Lord accepted to take the leadership of the Conservative party, he would have easily won at least 20 seats in Quebec and a lot more in Ontario and the maritimes than Harper did.
LaParkaMarka Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 Randy White isn't exactly some minor nobody. He was Reform House leader for three years, and he was the Justice critic for ages. I'm pretty sure he would have gotten into Harper's cabinet had the Conservatives formed a government, maybe as Attorney General. You can't just ignore the guy as fringe weirdo.

And as far as bankrupting the county goes: Where is our money? Lost in a failed gun registry, the HRDC scandal and Adscam. Geez, get some perspective. All of those things you mentioned, combined, are barely a drop in the bucket. Give me balanced budgets and the occasional spending bobble anyday over yearly eleven-figure deficits and social conservatism.
Tawren Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 Peter Mansbridge's reaction to the Marxist-Leninist party in control was priceless.
starvenger Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 I can't believe that Layton is beating Mills by 800 votes...

A cursory look at expenditure data will tell you that health expenditures in constant dollars have never decreased in the last fifteen years, and increased substantially in the last five or so.
Red Baron Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 To all the conservative people. It was suppose to be a balance between the Canadian Alliance, and the Progressive Conservative party, but it became too right-wing for many Canadians to think this was the smartest move for Canada. Atlantic Canada really bailed the Liberals out though, and now with a large minority government, I highly doubt that anyone would outs the Liberals, not even the Bloc. The Bloc/Conservative coalition was just to get the Liberals out of power, other than that, they wouldn't agree on anything. Surprises: Atlantic Canada taking up a lot of Liberal seats, more so than expected. Ontario holding its own with the Liberals, and surprisingly Quebec didn't get 60 seats. NDP getting more seats. Disappointments: Well, Harper manage something that many Conservatives do. Having a better place hold in Ontario, not the stranglehold they wanted, and the Green Party not getting a seat.
RavishingRickRudo Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 Hopefully the Green Party will get SOMETHING from this election so we can have an actual alternative in the future.
Dogbert Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 All that this election means is the unofficial death of Canada. Quebec's looking at another referendum in 2009, and the fledgling separatist movement in Alberta will now pick up steam with the Liberal win.

Hey if Alberta doesn't want to be a part of Canada anymore, we here in the U.S could make room for a 51st state........
BX Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 Can we get one of those nifty maps of Canada, with the ridings color coded according to who won?

Someone else was just saying that the comments from White were just "one MP talking about his personal opinions", as opposed to a pretty important cog in the Conservative wheel.
