Drunken police raid US students

LUKE MORFESSE - CRIME REPORTER

A group of drunken off-duty police officers forced American students to kneel on the ground at their Fremantle dormitory while taunting and humiliating them about the United States involvement in Iraq.

The incident is one of several being investigated by police internal affairs after a wild night in two of the port city's popular night spots involving seven WA police and two NSW officers.

Some of the worst behaviour was inflicted on patrons at the Orient Hotel, where one of the officers vomited across the bar after the drunken group was refused service.

Witnesses said a German barman was abused and insulted with nazi salutes. Earlier, the men told drinkers they were "above the law" because they were police.

The West Australian was told some drinkers at the Orient Hotel last Tuesday were Notre Dame University students but the abuse of the US students erupted after a fight at the Zanzibar nightclub.

During that incident, one of the seven WA officers, who are all from the Fremantle district, was allegedly assaulted by one of the American Notre Dame students and had a tooth knocked out.

Enraged, some of the drunken officers tracked the American down to the university's student accommodation.

It was there that several American students, including some who had nothing to do with the clash at the Zanzibar, were made to kneel on the ground and were humiliated.

It is understood the taunting included comments such as "Yankies go home", "What are you doing in our country" and "What are you doing in Iraq".

Frightened students called the police.

Several students approached by The West Australian yesterday declined to comment.

The university's acting vice-chancellor, Professor Peter Dallimore, said he would not comment because a student had been charged and the matter was still under investigation.

Because the incident involved Americans it is understood the university informed the US Consul in Perth.

Police Minister Michelle Roberts said she was appalled by what she had been told about the incident.

"I wouldn't have thought that any police officers would engage in this kind of behaviour, on duty or off duty," she said.

"The fact of the matter is that police officers . . . need to set an example to the community."

Assistant Commissioner Tim Atherton said the public had high expectations of police and he had instructed a superintendent and an inspector to investigate the matter.

Mr Atherton pledged to get to the bottom of any misconduct by police.

"The Commissioner and I share a great deal of frustration about this incident," he said.

Hopefully, SOME people will now recognize that people CAN act in ways that are completely contrary to their rules and that it does not mean that the gov't condones the actions.

That is most certainly fucked up, and as an Aussie I can only apologise. Still, Fremantle has always been a dump, and West Australians spend most of their life down at the beach, so their brains are generally cooked.

There has been remarkably little coverage of this in my state.

Just because my (USA) country is made up of a bunch of pussies doesn't mean my second-favorite continent has to be, too.

Don't apologize for something you didn't do.

Has the Abu scandal gotten a lot of coverage Down Under?...

No need to. You shouldn't take blame for something others have done.

Just so you all know, apologizing was what I was doing in my post. :P

I didn't post it to search out apologies. I posted it to show that you can have men in uniform, "representing" a government, who do things completely contrary to their country's values. It happens A LOT and I could likely find other stories of similar actions.

Australians are not, from all I know of them, terribly violent or mean people. There were some jack-ass cops that crossed the line.

I posted it to remind people that events, like Abu Gharib, can in fact be done by people and the gov't doesn't actually support their actions.

Mike as I explained in a previous thread, things like this happen when ever you give "stupid people" power,

the problem with the US soldiers and Australian police, it that often these people are not the smartest people in the world,

they take what little power they have to seriously.

this kind of stuff can be found in every country in the world,

True. 100% true. BUT, some people do wish to claim that the guards at Abu Gharib basically simply followed the example set by Bush --- not that they were a group of apes led by an inept commander.

Another attempt to equate abuse by other people in power to what the US forces did in Iraq. Sure, these guys abused their positions but doesn't even start to compare to the abuse that the Iraqi's suffered at the hands of US soldiers.

I can't imagine that there wasn't a mentality of "let's teach these sand niggers a lesson for 911!" in the US army from the very top right down to the lowly backward private.

You better imagine it, because that is the case. It was a small group of apes who did bad. They are also being punished rather harshly right now. This story simply indicates that the actions of a few doesn't have correlation with the whole. Are Australian police all pricks? Nope --- these few were, and a few others might be --- but overall, they're probably fine.

Were the apes sub-human?...

Damned near. But, they only humiliated people who wanted to kill them.

Problem is what you're saying is that sure, while what these guys did was bad, that doesn't mean what happened at the prison was all right.

Conversely, I can say that although what happened at the prison what bad, that doesn't make this situation any less serious, either.
