But the 'B' in 'ROYGBIV' stands for blue - indigo is purple. It may not be the exact purple, but it's still a shade enough to render it that and set it apart enough from blue in 'ROYGBIV' because of that.

.... my mum went through a phase of listening to the indigo girls...... I got worried.

 

Ok. Yes Indigo is its own colour.

 

But, in common terminology we would probably call it blue (whether AOO would cut of our fucking tongues or not) because it looks like a dark blue, where as blue, in the rainbow context, is a lighter colour.
