Multiple Sport Cities

I thought of this scenario just eariler today...

 

For cities with Major Multiple Sports teams...Which team is the "biggest" in that market and why is that?

 

Here in Cincinnati; We have the Bengals and The Reds.

 

I would have to say the REDS are a bigger deal here then the Bengals are...mainly because of the long history we have with it (dating over 120 years) and we've established a good history with 5 world series championships (behind only 3 other teams in MLB history, New York Yankees, Philly/Oakland A's, St. Louis Cardinals)...while the bengals have only reached the post season 7 times in Franchise history (36 year existance)

 

Reds have more historic names that are synomous with the city (Rose, Griffey, Browning, Morgan, Bench, Larkin, Davis, Foster,Kluszewski, Perez, Robinson, Nuxhull, Rijo and others)...while the bengals have about two...Anthony Munoz and Boomer Esiason (you can make a arguement for Ickey Woods).

 

Clearly, the Reds are a bigger deal to the city then The Bengals are...

Chicago is a big enough city that I think everything is huge when it's in season. Even the Bulls, for all their awfulness and disappointments, drew like 19,000 in a game against Golden State.

 

The Blackhawks are really waning from when they were big in the mid 90s...my elementary school was a hockey hotbed. I think people are discovering the worst ownership in sports and walking away.

 

The Bears are the Bears, what can I say?

 

But above all the sports, I think baseball takes precedence over the other three. Nothing polarizes the Windy City like the Cubs and the White Sox: the fans on the South Side and south suburbs supporting the Sox, and the North Side, the north suburbs, basically everyone else in Illinois (before you get too far downstate into Cardinal territory) supporting the Cubs. We've got Wrigley Field...how can baseball not be king?

Columbus has Ohio State, the Blue Jackets, Destroyers and the Clippers AAA.

 

This isn't even a question. OSU football is basically a religion here.

Pittsburgh: Pirates, Steelers and Penguins.

 

Steelers rule the roost by far.

 

Even when the Pirates were good back in the early '90s they didn't sell out Three Rivers.

 

And although the Penguins are horrid now, they were really hot in the early- to mid-90s. Even now, for as bad as they are, they only lost a few million last year, which isn't that bad considering the amount of money other teams have lost...

Boston: so dominated by the Red Sox it's not even funny. The Pats are in the Super Bowl and more people are talking about the Sox picking up ARod than they are the fact that the Pats are on a 14 game winning streak.

I have Tampa and Miami in close proximity.

 

Tampa: Buccaneers, by far. Even on warm March days, during Spring Training, they'll do a three hour show on how one free agent can turn the team around, and provide in-depth examples. The Lightning are second now that they win. The Devil-Rays are ignored mostly, except when they set records for losing.

 

Miami: Dolphins, again by far. Marlins in second, then Heat, then Panthers.

I live in Philly, which of course has all four. Any team that is doing well gets a lot of support, but without question this town is the Eagles. People here live and die by that team.

 

The Phillies everyonce and a while look like they could compete, but that usually fades. Flyers have their very loyal fans, but not nearly as many as the Eagles. And most people don't give two shits about the Sixers.

Philly (currently - who's winning or losing can make a big difference in the rankings):

 

1) Eagles - probably because they've done great the last 3-4 years. Not being a fan of the team, it gets on your nerves during the season

 

2) Phillies - addition of Thome & Wagner, resurgence of Burrell, high expectations for the team, new ballpark.

 

3) Flyers - made a run in the playoffs

 

4) 76ers - they were big when they made the finals in 2001, but it's been downhill since then. If you did this list in 2001, the 76ers would be #2.

New York: Oh God there are so many to choose from but I would have to go with the Yankees. Every team is huge in New York but I really think the Yankees are the most popular.

Carolina Panthers became the darlings of North Carolina last season, but the Duke vs. North Carolina games are still the biggest things going in sports. Carolina Hurricanes were huge during their run to the Stanley Cup finals two years ago, but now they are hardly mentioned. NASCAR is overall the most popular sport around here.

Flames, easily. Even moreso now during their huge playoff run.

Toronto:

 

1. Leafs - by miles.

2. Raptors - were huge in 01 when they came one shot away form the East finals.

4. Blue Jays - if this were the mid-90's they'd compete for #1, but now their dead last.

Eh, I don't live in Toronto, but going by the Star, I'd say the Raptors, Argos, and Jays are all neck-and-neck depending on the day. Last season, when the Jays were making a run before the All-Star break they were getting good press, usually on the front page of the sports section. The Argos made some waves when they signed John Avery a few weeks ago and the Raptors neverending search for a GM is relatively big news. Of course, they're all bumped to the 3rd or 4th page because of hockey, even though the Leafs (unfortunately) are long gone and we're left with Damien Cox telling us how horrible they are.

I live about an hour west of Buffalo, and the Bills are by far number 1 no matter what. The Sabres get closer in the attention gap depending on how good they are doing.

 

I go to school 45 minutes south of Cleveland, and the Browns are always #1. The Indians seemed to have been a close #2 when they are good, but have dropped down to #3 now that LeBron is on the Cavs.

Broadway plays, movies like Shrek 2, and millions of other forms of entertainment without much athleticism draw more fans than auto racing, yet they aren't considered sports. I understand you need to be in shape to drive a NASCAR or any other auto racing vehicle, but calling it a sport is really a stretch.

 

Back on topic, I think the Bears are bigger than the Cubs in Chicago. The city is split on Sox and Cubs (not necessarily evenly, mind you, but split nonetheless), but this is a football city and the Bears are everyone's team in town. Then I'd go Cubs, Bulls, White Sox, and Blackhawks.

 

Personally, I don't like the Cubs or Bulls (never have, never will), but the other three will always be my boys.

There's no doubt that the Bears are huge, but I think people are most fiercely dedicated to the Cubs.

 

Anyhow, the Bears. After the awesome 13-3 season, you had the lost season at Champaign-Urbana, and last season was a pretty big disappointment, as they could've been in the hunt for a wild card spot towards the end but that terrible start for the season made the battle just too uphill. I blame Kordell Stewart, I knew that was a bust from the get-go. So anyhow, I'd say that from what I've perceived, Bear interest has waned just a slight bit, but could be on the upswing for next year. At least I hope it does, as the NFL is really boring for me if Chicago's not doing well.
