Anya 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2004 DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball. The dual analog style of control for FPS was really hard to adjust to at first, but it's just too good now. I can't go back. Metroid Prime's controls were a pain because of it.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2004 "DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball." The hell?! "Metroid Prime's controls were a pain because of it." I find MP's controls to be practically flawless. It's just when guys teleport all over the room you're in and you have to shoot at them that it is a pain. I don't think dual analog would make that any easier. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2004 .... *ahem* Whatever. Also, Metroid Prime isn't even a First Person Shooter. It's a First Person Adventure.

AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2004 Have you played DOAX? It's a masterpiece. MP is totally a FPS. Screw Nintendo's buzzwords. No, I haven't played it, nor will I ever. It's not Nintendo's buzzwords. The emphasis are on exploration, uncovering secrets, platform-jumping, scanning, backtracking, the occasional puzzle-solving--where's that in Halo? It was programmed to try to translate the Metroid gameplay into a first-person experience. None of the Metroid games play like Halo, Doom, etc., extra dimension or different perspective be damned. Anya 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2004 Don't bash it till you play it. DOAX is an innovative, ground breaking title from the man that brought you Ninja Gaiden. Not all FPS are straight up action. Just look at Half-Life or Deus Ex. The days of all FPS being DOOM clones have been over for years. The whole point of putting games into genres is to easily determine how a game plays. You can't just make up genres for every single game because it's slightly different or has a focus on adventure as well as shooting. What's the easiest way to describe MP? A FPS. Nevermortal 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2004 ....but its still a volleyball game.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2004 Why is DOAX any good? I'm dying to know some justification for that opinion. Oh, and when genres evolve, so must terminology. Do we call Tekken 5 a 'beat 'em up' because that was what we usually called the walk-and-punch side-scrollers ten years ago? Are Contra and Earthworm Jim in the same genre? While, by and large, First Person games have moved beyond simply shooting lots of stuff up and hitting occasional switches, "true" FPSers are still being made--like Painkiller and Doom 3. If you can more accurately and precisely describe a game's gameplay in nearly the same amount of words, why not? Should we lump Wind Waker, Everquest, and FFX all together under "RPG?" They're usually commonly referred to as "action RPG," "MMORPG," and "console RPG." In Jumping Flash, you play in a first-person perspective and you have guns. Is it a First Person Shooter? Guest Askewniverse Report post Posted June 7, 2004 Have you played DOAX? It's a masterpiece. DOAX is an innovative, ground breaking title from the man that brought you Ninja Gaiden. Eh. I briefly played the game and I wouldn't say that it's ground-breaking or innovative. I don't see how DOAX is a "masterpiece" unless you're really into digi-tits. Back to recommendations, Need for Speed Underground and Project Gotham Racing 2 are pretty good driving/racing games.

Anya 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2004 If you can more accurately and precisely describe a game's gameplay in nearly the same amount of words, why not? Because nobody calls anything else a "FPA!"! The whole "FPA" thing was invented by Nintendo to hardsell Metroid as a FPS to skeptical fans. The greatness of DOAX can't be explained. It must be experienced. Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 DOAX is worth it just for the CASINO~! Seriously. I know you said no sports games, but I consider racing a different genre, and thus must recommend Project Gotham Racing 2.
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 Xtreme Beach Volleyball was actually a really fun game if you played against somebody. The matches could get pretty intense once you both mastered the timing of it.
Anya 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 Yeah, it is. It reminds me of NBA JAM. The two player is kind of bare bones though, in terms of modes and options.
Agent_Bond34 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 I've been interested in KOTOR for a while, but I'm questioning whether or not to get it since it is an RPG I felt the same way you did about it, until I rented it. I don't like RPGs very much, but I actually ended up liking this game. The light/dark side thing in this game kicks all kinds of ass, it's fun to be able to rob people of credits, and such. How can you have an Xbox without Halo?? I dunno... I seem to have that down rather easily. Seeing as how I have an Xbox without Halo
Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 I played KOTOR and thought it was phat-up until I realized how fucking deep it was going to be and that there were turns while fighting. I turned it off and returned it immediately. Good thing this was when I worked at a video store and didn't have to pay for it, or I'd be pissed. Don't nerd up Star Wars more than it already is. Save the turn-based strategy crap for Star Trek games or something.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted June 8, 2004 The turn-based system isn't too bad, at least it's pretty fast unlike Final Fantasy's 3 people standing across from each other, while one person dashes across and MAULS the other, while they stand there and take it, and like, not die. Spicy McHaggis 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 Outlaw Volleyball owns DOAX. Period. I've never been into FPS, but Halo IS unbelievable. Nm, I got it at Best Buy for $24.99.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 If you can more accurately and precisely describe a game's gameplay in nearly the same amount of words, why not? Because nobody calls anything else a "FPA!"! The whole "FPA" thing was invented by Nintendo to hardsell Metroid as a FPS to skeptical fans. What do you call Jumping Flash? Funny thing, it isn't like I was following Nintendo's coverage so faithfully that I buy into anything they say. Some one mentioned it in passing in a convo one time, and it kinda stuck. Either it's a FPA, or an Action/Adventure game, that just happens to be in the first person perspective. If the gaming press calls it that, it wouldn't be the first time they're wrong. The greatness of DOAX can't be explained. It must be experienced. If Ain't-It-Cool-News makes a spinoff site for video games, I hereby nominate you to write for them. Throw "Metal Arms: Glitch in the System" into the great game list. F'n awesome. -=Mike I liked the previews I saw, but that title is on PS2 and Gamecube too, BTW. You speak as if there is something wrong with "digi-tits" -=mike I've theorized that a) Anyanka likes her digi-tits, or b) she's parodying all of the goofy press that praised DOA3's gameplay. Because when you want a game recommendation, you turn to Newsweek, don't you? I grow more and more convinced she doesn't actually believe half the crap she says, she's just goofing around. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 Don't bash it till you play it. DOAX is an innovative, ground breaking title from the man that brought you Ninja Gaiden. Something I noticed on Classicgaming: The whole Dead or Alive series is the brainchild of Tecmo's Tomonobu Itagaki, known to be very outspoken on his opinions of other games on the market (he was quoted in one Gamespy interview as saying "Tekken 4 is shit".) After the success of the DOA games, he became the head of Team Ninja, one of Tecmo's most prominent divisions that also created the Xbox Ninja Gaiden. He's said that he thinks of the girls as "his daughters", which sounds pretty off-kilter on so very many levels. Also... Calling this a sports title is almost inaccurate, as the game is really 50% volleyball, 50% lesbian simulator. Sure, you do spend a good amount of time hitting the courts, but you have to remember that volleyball requires two people to a team. You've got to find a partner amongst the other girls and make her happy by purchasing the right gifts - essentially making this a modified dating sim. You never really need to play volleyball, really - it's just a way to get cash so you can buy any of the hundreds of items, ranging from swimsuits to accessories like hats, sunglasses and even nail polish. In effect, all you do is really play dress up with the Dead or Alive chicks and watch them play smack a ball around for a few minutes. And if you don't want to do that, you can litereally just spy on them as play like little girls on swingsets, frolic in the water, straddle trees and do stretching exercises. Creepy? Yeah, a little. But it's all pretty tame compared to some of the other stuff weirder stuff that's come out in Japan. The volleyball portion is only barely more evolved than, say, Pong. You can either whack the ball over the net or pass it to your partner, at two varying strength levels. You don't even really need to position yourself much, as the game practically does that for you as well. You won't find much in the way of strategy, but it's simplicity helps make it an amusing distraction. DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball also contains the most ridiculous intros known in existence. The first features the various girls playing around on the beach, including the infamous bit of Lei Fang feeding Hitomi a strawberry before she playfully bites on her finger. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 And yet .... I can't tell if Anyanka is being sarcastic or not..... Heh, that's a problem with a text-based medium. Although trust me, she's being sarcastic. Although, unlike most of us, if she buys it she might get an odd look or so, but if you're a guy, you must have absolutely no shame if you go into a store and actually purchase that. If I actually wanted it, I'd be more deeply ashamed to get it than buying porn. So Tecmo is lucky that a lot of people have no shame and that online shopping is so common. =P

Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2004 Maybe I like DOAX because I don't take gaming particularly seriously. I don't care how "ridiculous" the intro is, because it looks good and the tune played during it is extremely catchy. A very happy-summer-day song. I also liked seeing the videos from the other DOA games, such as the ultra cool DOA3 alternate video that shows Christie (my favorite character of the series) actually doing assassin stuff. It's not ball-busting difficulty or super deep plot-wise, but it's still a good entertaining game for your money, which, by now, should be paying for a pretty cheap used copy. Blue Bacchus 0 Report post Posted June 13, 2004 A recommendation of mine would be Chronicals of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. Even if you're not a Vin Diesel mark, the action and gameplay are awesome. The dialog is entertaining and the graphics are sweet! It takes a while (at least for me) to get used to the control scheme but it pays off. If you liked Pitch Black and/or Chronicals Of Riddick, this is your game. My $.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 14, 2004 but it's still a good entertaining game for your money, which, by now, should be paying for a pretty cheap used copy. I'm not convinced about it being "good," since no one really told me why it should be considered such. As for "cheap"--no, it isn't. $24.99 for a used copy? I ain't feelin' that. It sounds like it would be a great promotional item, but not material for a full retail-priced game.
