ESPN NFL 2K5 Thread

Crap, I lost Pennington for 6 weeks with a torn bicep. Does that rehabilitation thing-a-magig work to speed up recoveries all the time?

This seems to happen a lot in football games...if a guy is severly injured the previous year in reality, then his computer counter-part seems to get injured easily in the newest video game...in my season, both Pennington and Vick are sidelined with major injuries...

Ya, I had to deal 2 weeks with out Bobby Engram, Matt Hasselback, Shaun Alexander and Marcus Trufant. Luckily Engram and Trufants injuries were 2 weeks.

Well my second year in my Patriots franchise...and the Cowboys have made the Superbowl! It will be Patriots/Cowboys...Superbowl, 2006..

EDIT- Holy crap...and the Cowboys go into the bowl with the stats

Offf- 71

Def- 49

Ovr- 66

Damn. Plus they had like 3 injuries ni their conference game..so I'm sure that helped..but wow.

EDIT2- WE WON!! :D I upped the diffulculty to all pro....and :o it was hard as hell. I swear I thought I was going to lose. But my rookie won it for me..score 7-0 off an interception TD by rookie Mack Jacobs...then Colvin intercepted the Cowboys touchdown pass in the last few seconds to solidfy the game for us.

After a pretty shitty first run with the Bears, I went with the cowboys, and immediately traded Terry Glenn, my 2nd and 3rd round picks for Eli Manning and the Giants 4th round pick.

I've won two Super Bowls since then. Helps that I also traded for Tomlinson. ;)

I just picked this up today and it rules. I have one question though: How do I access Sportscenter in Franchise?

After all the week's games are done, go to "Schedule" and then click the right analog stick.

EDIT That's for you X-Box owners.

So far I'm 11-1 with the Vikings (All-Pro) and my offense of Culpepper, Moss, Michael Bennett, Marcus Robinson, Tim Brown and Shannon Sharpe had a 98 rating... till Bennett got injured when I tried to squeeze out some extra Crib points instead of taking the kneel downs. And I traded Moe Williams before the season for draft picks. Bah. Now they have it rated 88 and I won't have him till I get to the Superbowl if I make it that far.

 I'm guessing you have an Xbox...or does this also work on the PS2?

I know for me though...after the week is over just hit select, it even says at the bottom 'hit select to watch Sportscenter'...and that's it basically.

The Madden fanboys are out in droves today, proclaiming it's much better than our beloved ESPN NFL2k5.

Personally, I wouldn't want off-field drama in my franchise mode, and the gameplay still sucks I would imagine. I don't care about the defensive adjustments. There is no way in hell EA could make a game as realistic as 2k5 is, and I am truly converted.

Not to mention I'm not immediately forced to turn the announcing off in Madden. The announcers in ESPN have so much funnier, relevant, and interesting commentary.

Are we playing the same game here? I think the "announcers" are the worst I have ever heard in a sports game, to me all of the voice parts (including Chris Berman) are the worst part of this game...but to each their own I suppose.

ESPN's annoucing is the best commentary in a sporting video game, hands down, but like you said.. to each their own. Madden's franchise mode looks good, but like VX said I wouldn't want drama during my Franchise as the season goes along. Reminds too much of MVP Baseball 2004 and that game is just a fucking hassle with attitudes and such. Not realistic at all.

I'd say Madden has realistic things to it, but what really jumps out about ESPN is the player animations and the gameplay is just REAL. Completely unlike Madden.

I've played Madden and I've played ESPN.

While Madden once again has the deeper game in terms of buttons and whistles, and the little cool things. I believe that ESPN still holds better on-field product as I've actually had to earn everything and not make the 25 yard passes to be successful (all-though, I do use quite a few of those types of passes); whereas in Madden I either make insane yardage or none at all.

The game seems to allow questionable trades. I just traded Kelly Holcomb, 3rd round pick this and 2nd round pick next year for Ben Rothlisberger. They may have considered it due to the picks, but I don't believe they'd ever take that.

A 3rd this year and a 2nd next year may sound steep to some, but one of them would've been tied to me drafting a QB. I'd rather get a QB with stats I can see than take a shot in the dark at the draft.

It's more that some teams may find they don't want to pay certain amounts of cash, or at least wish to make a salary dump because they've got someone better in the wings. Or someone who proved themselves over last season and the guy with the bigger contract doesn't produce as much as the lower costing player. If a lower player gets traded, it is more because their contract is easy to escape and they can get rid of that guy and bring in someone to fill in their needs.

Therefore most of the trades make sense in that they are looking ahead, rather than with what they need right now. Problem is, in reality no team looks ahead, but tries to make peices fit for this season.

Maybe Roe's composure level never rose?

If his compure level remains low, it means that instead of him finding his target when the pressure gets to him, he'll make an errant pass and screw up more often than not. Via cpu or via the user.

Hence the computer will trade him away if he never improves in that category. Yeah, Maddox isn't much of an improvement on the compsure levels, but that's what it would come down to really.

Keeping 30ish year old Tommy Maddox but trading rookie 25ish year old Ben Roethlisberger is looking ahead to the future?

It's not always the same though..it was oppisite for me. I was just 'experimenting' with trades sort of..and they were easily willing to give up Maddox, but R...etc. they had no interest whatsoever in giving up.

Oh same here, not that I actually wanted Ben Roethlisberger (He's overrated IMO), but the Steelers won't give him up. I was referring to Kageho when I said that though, as he made an insinuation that Steelers would prefer Maddox over Roethlisberger, which I think is false. But like you said, not all of them are the same, as I've heard some people here successfully nab Roethlisberger (like The Bitch and El Satanico. I think that Roethlisberger would be fair game if you offer a good QB and some picks.

Has anyone gotten fired as a head coach in Franchise? If so what happens?

On a side note, playing in the Super Bowl is great. Even though the crowd is mostly filled up with the "home team" fans, they cheer for nearly everything as it would be in a real super bowl.

I have yet to be fired in franchise.

I imagine, you would either have to do one of the two...

A) Start over

B) Take over another team

I love ESPN, but the game has some terrible glitches. Like offsetting penalties + booth review = game dies. Or a challenge during a hurry-up offense causing a game freeze. Very lame...I would have rather had VC look for bugs for a few more weeks and release it a bit before Madden.

I got the perfect season as the Vikes (also added Shannon Sharpe and had Bennett get injured, like the guy above). I'm getting annoyed with the psycho salaries of Culpepper and Moss. I don't mind paying them a lot, but Culpepper is a huge liability with his 9 year $100 million contract. I tried trading him, but I take a 20 million salary cap hit. Restructuring his contract still gives me a huge hit. It's silly. How do real NFL teams get around this? I mean, I'm pretty sure the Vikes won't pay Culpepper 10 million in 2007.

You'll just have to restructure the contract the year before you get to the big money part of the contract. That's how the real teams usually handle it. However, you will probably take a big hit at some point over the contract. You can always try pitching him a shorter contract, but I doubt he'd bite.

So far I am 10-0 with the Colts (All-Pro), and I find defense on the game to be ridiculously easy, I usually run the same formation (BEAR) on every play, and I have something like 22 sacks with Thornton.

During Week 1 Marvin Harrison went out with a Broken Leg....out for 19 weeks, Here's hoping he's back for the Superbowl.

Peyton Manning seems unstoppable in this game, and Even though the colts defense isn't all that good ranking wise, 76 I believe, I have allowed only 10 points all season...

It's much better than any madden I've played, but I will be picking up NCAA Football 2005 Just because I love the recruitment aspect. My Idea: Since on Madden you can draft players from NCAA, Package the games together as a backage for like 65 bucks. Probably sell a few more games that way.

Well for this, if you're using the Defensive Tackle, and either move into a hole before the play starts..or shift your entire line sometimes (if that's your strategy) then yea..you can drive right through them easy sometimes.

And also the swim, spin, etc. allow you to easily get to the quaterback, so yea it's very easy to get sacks when controlling the Defensive End/Tackle.

But on Allpro? Surprising kind of..hell I do a game on All pro every now and then..and they kill me with some plays :s. Almost every run I do...someone's right there before I even get 1 ft. away and it's just like WTF? All I can do sometimes is pass and hope, ,and even then that doesn't always work :(.
