Temp Agencies

Recommended Posts

I first became affiliated with this temp agency about two months ago. They got me started at this warehouse job immediately where I was doing boring ass production and machine work, really repetitive stuff, but that's ok. I was putting in 40-50 hour weeks and making enough money to go out and to hit up the shore on the weekend, so it was perfect. Then my fuckin car died. I don't mean had a few repairs, it just flat out died, and would've needed a new engine which I didn't have the money for. The warehouse they had me at was about 25-30 miles away, and was impossible to get to through public trans because of the early start. So yesterday, they finally find me something close enough, unloading Fed Ex trucks for 4 hours a day. The lack of hours sucks, the hot ass trucks suck, and today sucks because the freight hasn't arrived yet, and I have to sit here at home until they call me and tell me to go in. And the later it gets, the hotter it gets.........cocksuckers.........

Anyway, any of you guys ever worked through an agency?

Total waste of time. They take away from your wages, they're unreliable, they're tedious, and they don't really care if you've got a job or not. Usually they've got a deal with a local place that always needs unskilled labor, and they do 90 day cycles so they don't have to pay as much. I'll never go through one again. Just start applying to warehouses and factories directly if that's the kind of work you're after.

Sometimes you can get lucky though and the place you're working at will want to keep you around. That's what's happening with me now.

I was brought in to do work that was estimated to take a week. I finished in less than three days. They were so impressed they brought me back for another project, then another, then yet another. Last week they just flat out asked me to stay the whole summer. They even gave me a nice raise.

Ain't life grand?

I could've stayed in with the warehouse where I worked machines and production, they were going to "buy me out" from the temp agency, but alas, no car, no workie.

When you hire directly into a warehouse (for example) they pay you X amount per hour..the thing is, they've got to dick around with having people in the front office sifting through piles of applications for an unskilled job with high turnover..

so, to save some trouble (and money) they'll hire a temp service to do their dirty work. This temp service has to stay in business somehow, though, and they get this from the warehouse, which comes from YOUR wages. You'll be surprised the difference.

I worked in this craphole shifting boxes of shoes around for like..7 and some change, then went to my current job, and I'm making right around twice that hired directly in. Same experience necessary, only a county away from the other place, and it's definitely NOT all the business itself, because I work for a Kroger subsidiary, and they love to fuck people over on money. Also, the only jobs they ever seem to have are either warehouse, data entry, or throwing shit onto or off a truck. If you've got a little saved up, and are trying to put yourself through school right quick, something of that nature, try getting a CDL. There's always a demand for drivers. Be easy stuff over the summer..

My friend might be able to get me a job driving a truck except I am an awful driver with no sense of direction.

You're probably right about the wages.......

Production Job: $7.89 with time and a half after 40 hours

Fed Ex: $8.26 an hour

If you've got an airport nearby, check with the offices of the companies that run freight through there. They're always after people to load and unload planes, and the pay scheme is usually pretty good. Be prepared for weird hours though. things like three 12 hour days, then 2 off, then 2 on, three off..shit like that.

Well, you're pretty much screwed without a car, unless you live someplace fairly metropolitan. Grab a phone book and just start calling places cold. Tell 'em you've got machine experience, etc, and see if they're taking applications. There's more places listed in the phone book than the classifieds.

A lot of places don't even bother with papers anymore. Hit the internet listings.

I hate temp services. Usually, temp services hire people to do Warehouse jobs for like 8-12 hours a day. I don't like how the agencies bullshit you by saying: "If work hard and do what the company says they'll hire you" Then you only work there for a week or 2. Working Abbott through Manpower has to suck, I know people that work for Abbott for a year and a half and STILL are temps.

I got shafted 2.5 days into my first assignment, and then had to wait a week before receiving another one, then was only there for half a day. I'm never bothering with one again.

The lack of a car is really going to bite me in the ass for a while though. How do they take your wages?

The factory I used to work at paid regular workers $14 an hour. Temps got about $8-9 for their services and the agency took the difference.

I know a small business owner who told me the whole scam. Let's say it a boring manufacture job with repeative work so basically anybody can do it. Now the business owner will pay the temp service whatever is the going rate for that job then the temp service will hire you for a dollar or 2 above minimum wage. This saves the small business owner from having to get certain insurance(s) just in case the worker slips or falls while wasting time in the toilet. Its a win win situation for everybody but the worker. The small business owners gets cheap labor without worries about paying full time benefits, the temp services makes a profit, but the poor worker gets low wages and little change for advancement.

I got insurance from the temp agency that kicked in immediately though......

My temp agency insurance kicks ass over the full time job insurance. How fucked up is that.
