I just played SMB for the first time in 15 years. I must know: what are the significance of those damn fireworks that you get at the end of a level sometimes! I gots to know!

I think it has to do the points you receive for the amount of time you had remaining when you completed it, or something.

It's a festive celebration for finishing a level.

Anyone remember Tetris and how if you beat it you were treated to an awesome fireworks display? Same thing.

I don't know the signifigance of them, but I know it's based on your end time. If you get something ending in a 6 (ie 206), then you get 6 fireworks. Time ends in 4 and you get 4 fireworks and then the same for 2. It basically just gives you points for each one.

The bigger question is...who's setting them off?

Probably the same evil mastermind who set traps and collected enemies for Mario, but also left these great big boxes with power-ups sitting around.

WHAT?

Beat Tetris? How in the hell do you beat Tetris??? I thought the game was never-ending, with the level just getting proportionately faster than the previous one into infinity.

For once, that comment wasn't directed at me.

I always assumed though, that the fireworks determined on the height of the pole you jumped to at the end, but I never really cared to think it through.

I only had the gameboy version, but there were modes where you had to clear a certain number of rows, and blocks were already on the screen when you started. The higher the difficulty, the more rows were present when you started. When you beat the board in that mode, you'd get a little show.

I'm assuming that's what he meant.

It's 6, 3 and 1.

You get 500 points for each.

Thanks.

Hey, don't be hatin' on Bowser.

He's not perfect, but at least he tries hard and never gives up.

Well someone has to guard the Princess' cell.

Besides, he's got hundreds of underlings to hunt Mario.

538 to be exact, plus an infinite number of Bullet Bills, Cheep Cheeps, Lakitus, Lakitu Eggs and Spinies

Question: Bowser has about 7 or 8 kids. Who the hell is the mother for all these little SOBs?

I'd guess some Kooba hussies at random, but I think Bowser's a different species (Alligator Snapping Turtle), so I don't know about that.

Then again, thinking about the reproductive systems of Birdo and Yoshi really hurts my head, so maybe I shouldn't even ask.

Dear God, that reminds me of something stupid. When I first played Paper Mario on N64, I was pegging that Luigi was gonna be turning on Mario. Damn me and my Wrestling mind.

Oh well, at least we got the storyline that the Princess and Bowser had Bowser Jr., which means Bowser now has 8 kids. JERRY SPRINGER TIME!

I've always quizzed over that one too, but hit bricks walls with every theory.

I don't think there is an explanation.

My favorite Super Mario has to be The second one with the choice of four to play with, and each level was so cool. unfortunately...it was ALL a Dream!

What was the story behind SMB 2? I heard that it was suppose to be an entirely different game (well, not a Mario game) but somehow it was changed into being a Mario game with a bunch of wacky characters.

Yeah, 2 sucked. They tried to bring some new elements in but thankfully went back to basics for the third.

The 1st was more entertaining than half of today's video ganes, probably thanks to it's simplicity in doing everything.

When they released SMB2 in Japan, it was deemed "too hard for American gamers", so they took a Japanese-only game called Doki Doki Panic and basically changed the sprites to Mario characters. That's why the game seemed so different - it wasn't a Mario game to begin with.

As for the Japanese SMB2, it was later released in the states as part of the Super Mario All Stars package on SNES and was deemed "The Lost Levels".
