Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 Reality Check time, folks. Benoit has the least heat of the three faces in the Main Event. Hell, Benoit gets less face heat then two of the TOP HEELS. When he was tagged in, TWICE we got dead silence. Any time we got a segment with Flair and Benoit, Flair got more reaction then benoit. And that Sharpshooter at the end was worse then The Rock's. He's a boring Champion, his character (what little there is) is so insufferably dull that for the first time in a LONG time, they're just ignoring the World Champ week-in and week out. It's not just a Clique thing, either. When Goldberg was Champ he was the center of the program, and he did fairly well with the role. Benoit cannot, and the show is just falling part with him coming out and winning the tag match of the week. I'd much rather see a guy like Randy Orton carrying the show: - He's more over than Benoit. (And that's face OR heel heat) - He's more charismatic than Benoit. - In 18 years in the business, Benoit has still yet to develop a character as well as Randy has in 2. - Going over Benoit around the horn would do nothing but improve Orton. I eagerly await the end of this joke of a reign.
Nevermortal Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 I agree, he should probably lose it to Eugene.
Guest Choken One Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 So he didn't get pops in the area that he is WELL known for being NOT OVER. That doesn't keep Vince from putting Shawn over in NYC and Canada does it...

Why should the fans care about him when they continually hammer home that HHH and HBK is more important than their World Champion?
razazteca Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 It maybe the worst Sharpshooter ever but remember whose Beniot's opponet was..............none other than the forest green Randy Orton. The champ can only do so much carrying before he hurts his back.
Art Sandusky Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 I expect the World Title to be the focus of the show again over the next two months at least, so we'll see for sure. The last month has been about building the HHH/HBK feud more, so it's hard to gauge.

The champ can only do so much carrying before he hurts his back. Yeah. Think about Eddie Guerrero, for example. He did a massive bladejob at Judgment Day just to make a JBL match watchable and because of that, he's been feeling stressed out lately to the point that he's acting heelish towards certain crowds when he's supposed to be a face. I just hope Benoit doesn't go to the lengths Eddie did just to prove to WWE that he deserves to be the World Heavyweight Champion.

Art Sandusky Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 I've noticed that "dead silence" means "I don't like this person" on this board. Kinda like how Orton used to get "dead silence."

The champ can only do so much carrying before he hurts his back. I'm guessing you've never been in it before..but the sharpshooter...that's a move that mostly relies on the person doing it, so you can't say that it looked bad because of Orton. When you're in that position, there's no way you can adjust yourself to make it look better. He actually put it in right...but then he all of a sudden dropped the legs once he locked it in.
DerangedHermit Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 I've noticed that "dead silence" means "I don't like this person" on this board. Kinda like how Orton used to get "dead silence." Or how HHH got dead "silence"

Ummm..that's on just about any wrestling board you go to. Although..in this case it may not be completely off, seeing as how Orton and Flair somehow seem to be getting more face pops then the champ. Although the Benoit chants when the crowd does get into them..are fairly loud.

SuperJerk Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 And to think I've been accused of starting dumb topics.
Art Sandusky Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 His assertions that Benoit isn't as over and doesn't get the reaction the #1 face (which he is technically by being the champion) should get are founded, but they aren't nonexistant. Benoit is just a guy that grows on a crowd through his matches. While there may not be massive pops for him when he comes out, he has them as he leaves, which is more important, I think.
JN News Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 Chris Benoit truely DOES deserve to be the World's Heavyweight Champion. Why? Because, he's just a wrestler. That's the basis of his gimmick. He's supposed to be a wrestler that gets in the ring, and wrestles. He was never really supposed to have any kind of personality, whatsoever. His gimmick & persona is supposed to be a guy who steps into the ring, night in and night out, and wrestle, and put on great matches in that ring. That's the bottom line with The Crippler.
tbondrage99 Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 Benoit did quite good going into Wrestlemania as challanger, and Backlash as champion. The reason he wasnt over as much since then is because he almost being kept off the show aside from wrestling a match, and because of the huge build-up for Trips & HBKs match that "would end the fued." Once Benoit gets some TV time again he will be over as much as ever.
SuperJerk Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 Benoit has gotten far greater reactions in other cities. To judge and say someone's title reign should be ended because of the pops you get in one city on one night is silly. One must also consider how could the rating are for the quarter hour they are wrestling (Jericho vs. Christian in that cage match didn't do so well in the ratings compared to some of the stuff Benoit's been in). Including in your argument that Randy Orton's a better superstar (ignoring the fact that Orton's been pushed non-stop for a year, has had a dozen top guys job to him, is given more air time, and has his interviews completely scripted for him) is not a good way to convince me that Benoit's title reign has been a joke.
Guest The Ultimate Fantasy Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 I agree, Benoit starts the match with people in dead silence but he ends it with people giving him a standing ovation 9 times out of 10. Although, what will happen when he loses the title? Will he go Jericho and face random hosses, or perform other pointless task? Or will he become a multiple time champ?

Couldn't of put it better myself. How can it be Benoit's fault that fans are going cold on him in one city? Blame HHH (and HBK perhaps) - it was bad enough that HHH was holding people down in World title matches, but when he does it to the reigning champ while he's in a completely different feud is just ridiculous.
Guest KJ Brackish Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 Finally, I'm not the only one who thinks so. I've said it from the get-go that Benoit's reign wouldn't be a good one, but everyone tried to fight with me because of my opinion, but now it seems to be coming true. I'll just say that I jinxed Benoit. KJ
Karc Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 I think WWE got the message. Putting HHH over is the top priority now. Just look at what happened at Raw. He immediately gets involved in the top three things on Raw (Kane, Benoit, and HBK). He already got over HBK, Kane is going back to the midcard to care for Lita's bastard son, and all that's left is to bury Benoit by himself at Vengence or Summerslam. So as negative as the opening post was on Benoit, it does being up some good points. Only when Benoit does his signature moves is he over. I have no idea why anyone is even cheering for Orton at this moment let alone thinking he's ready to take Benoit's place wrestling-wise, but I'm betting it has NOTHING to do with Orton and millions to do with a year-long job by Foley.
JN News Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 Aren't we supposed to be wrestling purists, here? Isn't a great wrestling match the only thing that's supposed to matter to us?
cawthon777 Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 There's nothing wrong with Benoit's reign. He more than anyone is, at this point in time, a prime candidate for Wrestler of the Year. I don't think I need to run down his accomplishments since winning the Royal Rumble but the way the WWE has consistantly pushed him - despite not having the mic ability of the Rock - is a sign that they do have faith in him as a top guy. And, if his title defenses thus far are any indication, that faith is rightly deserved. Was Kurt Angle always the focal point of the show during his first run? No. Especially when you had Steve Austin vs. Triple H as the top feud at the time.

I've said it from the get-go that Benoit's reign wouldn't be a good one, but everyone tried to fight with me because of my opinion, but now it seems to be coming true. I'll just say that I jinxed Benoit. KJ Because you've been proven as having an IQ of 75 time and time again, with no way to back up your opinions, and no way of stating them with any semblance of intelligence in the first place. Anyway, what was already said must be stated again. Benoit comes out to modest pops, but manages to get the fans on their feet, cheering, by the end of the night. His mic skills, character, charisma, etc ARE FINE. His mic skills and promos are befitting of his character. His character is a gritty, back to basics wrestler who just goes out and gets it done with minimal posturing. Besides the point, how is Orton's cocky character (which doesn't have much depth to it, I may add) any better or worse than that. Benoit's charisma is purely in-ring, as I said and others have said, in his ability to draw people into matches. How these three things are somehow unbefitting of being World Champion, I'll never know. Bottom line, Benoit's overness can't be judged by tonight, when he consistently gets good pops and reactions in other places besides Ohio, and ratings have gone upward, reaching 4.0 during his reign during the first time in god knows how long. While Benoit is booked correctly in matches, how is he really expected to reach the upper echelon when he doesn't get half the screen time of Evolution, and his reign has taken a backseat to the HBK/HHH saga?
Kahran Ramsus Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 What exactly is wrong with Benoit's reign exactly? His is the best title run since the creation of the belt in August 2002. Watch Wrestlemania again and tell me he's not over.
