Owning a house...

Recommended Posts

This "owning your own home" crap is for the freakin' birds. I've had nothing but trouble with mine and my wife and I are nearly broke just trying to keep up with it. Add in the fact that I am a lazy bastard at heart and don't like the idea of having to use up all of my free time just to do upkeep on this stupid thing.

I think I liked it better when we were renting. Sure, it was just money down a bottomless pit and the place was kind of a dump, but I didn't have sewage in the basement and I didn't have to mow the grass and if a window cracked or the plumbing got all f'd up, it wasn't my damn problem.

It's no different than owning a car. Sure it's fine when it runs good, but what happens when you need an oil change or it needs work done to it? Quit bitching about it, it's part of life. If you don't like it you and your wife should move into an aprtment and live there your whole life. This is just mindless bitching.

TSA09 & Thumbtack: Thanks for your helpful suggestions and I will keep that in mind. I really appreciate your empathy and caring. I apologize for feeling like venting a little and having the audacity to post it in the "General Chat" area and then forcing you to read it.

No Tom, they haven't done a thing to the plumbing except tell us that our toilet paper is too heavy and we should use a thinner brand. We're still fighting them on it, but damn man, I am tired of the fight.

kkk: We had a home built for us. Nice house really, 3 bedroom, bath and a half, full basement. Very nice from the outside and in a very nice neighborhood. We paid, give or take about 150,000 which in our neck of the woods is about average, maybe a little high, but not bad for a new house.

is it just you and the wife? my wife and i just got into a house this summer about the same as you've described, but 2 beds and a two-car...we have a daughter and only plan on one more kid so this is all the house i'm really going to need I think...

me, personally, i enjoy stuff like yardwork, housework etc...makes you appreciate what you're paying for that much more...at the end of the day you can feel like it's money well spent...

You had a house built for you and all this is happening

!? Damn, weren't there any warranties or something?

How long have you saved up for this house, and how much did it cost -- closing costs/downpayment/etc.

And I'm sorry, but that 2-ply excuse is funny as --

Well, anyways...

Lushus: Yup, just me and the wife for now, although we plan on having kids, thus the 3 beds. We also have a 2-car garage and I love it. I love not having to get rained on to get in the car and in the winter I loved not having to clean off the car before leaving the house.

Tom, That's what we've been saying for a yaer, but nobody believes us...

kkk: Yeah, there are warranties, and we are getting a lot of the stuff fixed, but they dispute everything and try to make it sound like it is either your fault or "just something that new houses do." The funny part is, the people who built the house were awesome and very helpful. Its only since we were transferred into the warraty department that we have run into the proverbial brick wall. We saved for about 2 years or so for the down payment. I think we put down about $4000 under the FHA plan and I think we paid like $1500 in closing costs. Oh, and $50 for a mailbox. ;) We got lucky on the interest rate and managed a 5%, so our payment, at least for now, is still under $1000.

Its all under warranty, tell them to quit their bitching and fix it or you'll sue their asses. You have legal documentation stating that they need to fix all of this within a certain time frame, when they feel like doing it properly then they can lounge about and drink beer...until then make their lives miserable for making your lives as such.

Also tell them to redo the piping from the toilet to the sewage line, bigger piping that is. Its not your fault the pipes they chose can't take you taking big dumps and pampering your ass with quilted 2-ply. You paid for all of it to be done properly and it should have been.

As far as mowing the lawn goes...pay some 10 year old like 20 bucks to do it every month and a half or so.

A lot of warranties on houses are really not worth the money. Usually it's more cost effective to take those monthly (or yearly) warranty fees and put it into a savings account.

No, just don't have the audacity to post your frustrations like a whiny fuck. I'm sure the whole thing sucks eggs for you, but I'm not gonna pay much mind to cuddling you and being all OMG THANX 4 SHARING if you post like a spoiled bastard. Channel that pissed off venting into busting heads and getting it fixed.

As a new homeowner as of last August 1, I gotta say, what the hell did you expect when you bought the house? Surely you were aware of things like yard work and basic home maintenance/repair. If not, well, uh, do some homework next time I guess. Personally, I don't know why I waited so long to buy a house; it's been one of the greatest things I've ever done, despite having to deal with "problems" myself. It's nice having your own place to trash as you see fit.

The problem I've noticed with many people who buy houses is that they can't really afford them. They see the monthly payment and think "oh we can make that" without taking into account things like taxes, insurance, and maintenance costs. My neighborhood has existed for only about 2 years, and there's already been 12 houses put up for sale in that time. I'd be willing to bet at least half of those are people who can't keep up with the money.

Its all under warranty, tell them to quit their bitching and fix it or you'll sue their asses. You have legal documentation stating that they need to fix all of this within a certain time frame, when they feel like doing it properly then they can lounge about and drink beer...until then make their lives miserable for making your lives as such.

It doesn't exactly work just like that. Most builders' warranties (mine, anyway) have limited liabilities built into them that states they're only responsible for certain things or builders' defects. Lots of times, things like defective materials are not covered - only the work done to use the materials to build the house.

There are also minimum standards they use to define what is an "acceptable" condition and what is not. For instance, on my house, the air conditioner, per their standards, only has to be able to cool the house to 78 degrees. If it can't get to 72, well, tough shit...if it will get to 78, they don't have to fix it. So "suing their asses" isn't always an option.

Oh, and as Rant said "extended warranties" (be it for a house, car, or whatever) are a ripoff 95% of the time. Why do you think they push them so much? Because it's a great deal for the company selling it.

As far as mowing the lawn goes...pay some 10 year old like 20 bucks to do it every month and a half or so.

It is wrong to pay others to mow your lawn unless you're a cripple or something. Get off your lazy ass and do it yourself. Takes one whole hour a week.

That is true. My parents had one and their house after 2 years fell completely apart, due to the builder. Our house wasn't the only one with problems and my parents, along with 5 other families sued. My family was the first to have their case settled and they paid in full for all repairs to be made. Soon after they settled with us and we had our money the company went and filed Chapter 11.

Glam Slam - Believe me I know what a trouble things like this can be, I can tell you horror stories of what my family went through. But on the same token, it's all part of owning a house. My parents had owned 4 other homes prior to our move to Texas and this was the first house they ever had problems with. It does suck, however it all comes with the territory.

If I could I would own a house, sure it's extra time and money you need to spend but I sure as hell do not want to be in an apartment for my life. Mowing the yard and doing housework is part of owning a house, you should have known that prior to moving into a house.

Don't feel to bad, I got a few friends of mine who all wanna jump in and buy a house but they have no idea what goes into buying one. They think it'll be small mortgage payments and it'll be paid off in less than 5 years. Then they wanna put stuff in (which none of them actually have experiance doing) and then sell it off for more money hoping they all can get back a little more than what they paid for it. They wanted me to go in on it, but I told them hell no. Its stupid because everyone expects everyone to stay in to the very end of buying a house, but what if someone wants to bail out? What if someone doesn't wanna move out after its all paid off, and what makes them think they can all pay it off in less than 5 years? So don't feel all to bad at least you can say you and your wife alone own your own house. Your just doing what all familes who own a house are doing.

and I would take residence in part of this house for free. I'll contribute sitcom-esque humorous situations...like coming home with a girl who's 16 years old but says she's 19. Uh-oh, looks like trouble...and laughs!

Scroby - The only way it'll be a small mortgage is if they buy a crack house.

FS - If I win tomorrow night's $120 Million dollar lottery, consider it done :P

kkk - I wouldn't sweat it. I say go ahead with it. You'll love it! most of the people that post in here have no clue.

Christ, after reading this thread I'm starting to get second thoughts...

Like I said on AIM yo. Just make sure you have a reserve fund. Especially since it's fairly old. Outside of that it's a good looking crib.

Deal, in fact I could bring 6 more TSMers in and make it just like the Real World.

Bring in CanadianChick and Thumbtack. To hell with 4 more...they'll start drinking my chocolate milk and stuff.

Oh I know TSA, thats excatly why I'm not going in on it. But they all sware (even none of them barely have any credit) that the mortgage is going to be so low and it'll be paid off so quickly. I'm gonna laugh at them when they can't afford it and one leaves and that causes the rest of them to lose the house and the money they put into it.

I've never owned a home before, but I've rented plenty of times, and can say without hesitation that it's easier being homeless.

::deep breath::

OK, I reread the entire thread and I have to say one thing...

Damn, I was in a seriously bad mood yesterday. Owning a house is not the horror show I have made it out to be, and I don't really mind doing yardwork. It's just that we've had that ongoing issue with the sewer line, plus our yearly review for the warranty is up and I am a little stressed about that as the 90 day review didn't go well. kkk, if I frightened you off of the house i'm sorry. Overall, I think it was a good idea.

But let me tell you, there are days where the security blanket of our old apartment looks pretty damn comfortable.

Just let me remind you about what Rant said, most of the time the warranties mean shit. So I honestly doubt it would have made any difference.
