Guest Astro Report post Posted June 15, 2004 The intros and speeches were kind of bland (And I grew up watching these guys, its not like I'm a Newbie from 1997) -Bobby Heenan's speech is everything its cracked up to be -Sarge's speech was quite good as well SS Graham vs Bruno has roughly 5 moves in the 15 mins or so shown JYD's mention of the "Mid South" from a promo in 1987 surprised me rather greatly.... SS Graham's confidential piece was real interesting, his speech was not Race/Flair's banter was priceless.. More to come as i watch the alley fight and more... Guest Astro Report post Posted June 15, 2004 Ernie Ladd really came across as the Elder statesman of the WWE, as he sat back, not showing too much emotion during the show, but when it was his time to speak on the JYD, he was well spoken, consise and really made JYD seem truly HOF worthy. The matches themselves may not be much to look at but from a historical perspective (considering several of these I had never seen) I was glad to have them on there. I'm not even sure if the Superstar / Bruno match has ever been shown in full (?). I would think that they may have shown clips on the TV shows at the time but certainly not all 14 minutes. I don't even think it's on the world title CHV tape from 87. Slaughter bleeds like a stuck pig in the alley fight. Meltzer gave it the Match of the Year honors. Guest Astro Report post Posted June 16, 2004 More thoughts-- Buddy Rogers didn't seem to be very charismatic on Buddy's Corner, maybe that interview with studd was a poor representation of his work, but he didn't impress me. Also it was stunning to think he was still a semi active competitor only 4 years prior to that. --- Harley Race's bumping at WM 3 still impresses the hell out of me, even after I've watched that match dozens of times since 1987. Its amazing he was regulated to jobber duty for the Warrior in less than a year's time. At the HOF ceramony they refer to Race as an 8 time World Champ, at WM XX he's back to 7 time champ. ----- Studd vs Andre had decent psychologyand was pretty good for a match whose crowd popping high spots were body slams and headbutts Also Did Monsoon refer to Dusty Rhodes as "The Dusty One" when plugging Rhodes upcoming appearence. --- Laytoya Ritter looked more like JYD than John jr did to BJ Studd (Mean Gene made a point to say BJjr looked like BJS) ---- Superstar BG and Greg V. both got pretty big pops at WM, something I failed to notice watching live.... I have the newspaper ad promoting the show and even that states that Superstar bowed out of the scheduled battle royal and opted for a title shot instead. It's posted on the website. res37618 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2004 The ONLY thing that really bugged me about this set was the Race/JYD match mistake. The packaging says it's the match from SNME in Jan. 87, but it's actually the match from WM III . . . . that's a pretty big blunder, and I'dve rather seen the SNME match than WMIII, which I've seen oodles of times. Jericholic82 0 Report post Posted June 28, 2004 Race is at least an 8 time champ. he lost his 7th to flair at starrcade 83 (as seen on the flair dvd) but the next year they did at least one switch to race back to flair in new zealand or something and it was never announced in the states until the late 90s where the pwi almanac stated it as well. so actually we have no clue how many times flair won it. and when they call him the 14 time champ are they including the wwf titles he won? strummer 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2004 Loved the DVD. The best part of Heenan's speech is when he talks about Vince asking him to go on the road with Flair in 91. Bobby's response was "great, now I have to go on the road with Larry Flynt over here" Flair just loses it at this point. The vein in his head was ready to burst because he was laughing so hard. Bobby also got some great one liners about Pat Patterson and Verne Gagne. I also liked Tito's speech. He seemed genuinely honored to be inducted. I was suprised to hear Harley Race compliment the King gimmick he was given, I had thought he would have hated it. As for the extras, well, those matches did not hold up well for me from when I saw them as a kid. Man, JYD was terrible in the ring, his punches were worse than Lita's and Shane McMahon's. But he oozed charisma and was way over. The Santana/Valentine match holds up well for today. Muracco/Morales was not that great, but had great heat. I'd definitely recommend it. ISportsFan 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2004 The running commentary in the Alley Fight with Slaughter and Patterson was really annoying (the alternate track with the match). It was really blatently from the "old school = real" mentality, saying that Vince Sr. didn't plan the finish of the match, that everything "really hurt," that they were really trying to take each other's heads off, and Slaughter actually believing that this match was the greatest match of all time. It was kind of like listening to 60 year olds talk about their high school football days, when the sport had real men who never sat out for injuries and their games were 10x better than the games today.
