Mary-Kate Olsen to be treated for eating disorder.

Recommended Posts

Guest Askewniverse

I said this earlier, but some people may have missed it, so I'll say it again.

As far as I know, there isn't a definitive answer as to what causes anorexia. It could be caused by chemical inbalances in the brain and body, environmental/social factors, or a combination of both. The Olsen twins achieved fame at a very young age. The stress that comes with fame might be a significant factor in Mary Kate's development of anorexia. Combine the stress from fame with the upcoming transition to college and you have a recipe for disaster. You also have to take into account the fact that Mary Kate Olsen is a teen. Teenage females are at the greatest risk for developing an eating disorder (average age of onset is 17). Females who are "overachievers" or "perfectionists" have an even higher risk of developing an eating disorder. It wouldn't be entirely out of the question for Mary Kate to be an overachiever. As a celebrity, she might be pushed to strive for perfection, whether it's by her own volition or by someone else.

Personally, I'm indifferent towards the Olsen twins. I don't like them, but I don't hate them. I just don't think mental disorders are funny.

Poor people get it too, you know. That's what a lot of this comes down to... people just don't like the rich. For the record, I don't have any sympathy for her either, but I don't think it's funny.

That's pretty much how I feel about this whole subject.

Where is this obvious?

Look at their faces. Back on Full House, they had massive bag-looking depressions under their eyes, which are completely gone now. Also, for such twig-skinny girls, they sure do pack a fairly impressive cup size, which is always suspicious.

but it wouldn't sink in. so i just gave up...you just can't reason with these people.

That's part of my point. I've known several anorexics, and by and large, they're some of the most frustrating people on earth to try to talk to. Most of them just will not listen to anything you say about their condition. It's incredibly exhasperating to go on and on for a looooong time about body fat ratios and the media's false perception of beauty and all that stuff, just to be brushed off with "but I still need to loose fifteen more pounds", especially when the person you're talking to weighs maybe about 98 lbs to begin with. They're some of the more blindly delusional people I've ever known.

To help her through this i think they should be referred to in public as Ashley and the fat one

Now THAT'S funny.

Although, not as funny as:

George: "Take me to the theater, in New Jersey."

Cabbie: "Why do you need to go to Jersey?"

George: "I dunno... something to do with original sin, I think."

Wait a minute ... you're right! How in earth could these girls have changed appearance in the last 12 years? Could it have been, I don't know, puberty that made them change the way they look? Get a grip, man, are you telling me that you look the same now that you did when you were a preteen?

And their breasts are probably no bigger than a small 'B' cup ... if you're going to get fake titties, you go bigger than that.

Which is the same reason why I don't believe Spears got breast implants, or Aguilera.

If they did, they would have gone bigger.

J*ingus, someone who cuts themselves is just as mentally disturbed as someone with anorexia. Both of them are gonna kill themselves if they don't get help. Why, in your mind, is there any difference simply because of a bank account??

Furthermore, there is no way either of those girls have had breast implants. Do you think every skinny girl has tiny breasts?? I feel sorry for you if that's the case as you clearly have no skinny chicks with big tits in your life. That, or you're so ignorant and cynical that you think they've had boob jobs too.

You really seem to love calling me "ignorant", Nanks. Which is interesting, considering that you yourself are completely ignorant about myself and the things and people that I've known and done in my life.

On the subject of breasts: yes, it is very unusual for a skinny girl to have big tits. That's because: 1. "Skinny" tends to be defined as "lacking fat"; and 2. The vast majority of tissue in the female breast is made up of fat cells, and the ratio goes higher and higher for girls with big natural boobs. Ergo, it is scientifically unlikely for a skinny girl to have large breasts. Such girls do exist, but it's very improbable that a couple of child starlets would just happen to grow up into such rare cases.

On the subject of implants: on a quick count, I personally know four girls with breast implants. I know how they tend to look. And if you'll look back at what I actually said in my post, I never said the Olsens had them. There is a whole range of different surgeries that can be performed to enhance the appearance of the breast that don't involve implants in any way, from minor resurfacing jobs to massive reconstruction efforts. I just made the observation that, for tiny skinny anorexic girls, the Olsens still do have some fairly impessive racks, which is not exactly a common occurance.

On other cosmetic surgeries: it looks entirely possible to me that both girls have had some work done on their faces, as their general cheekbone and eyelid structure look quite a bit different from how they used to. In lots of photos of them taken on the red carpet where the lighting is uncontrolled, they still appear to have abnormally clear and consistent skin complexions, which suggests the possibility of dermabrasion, laser skin treatments, or other similar work. And overall, plastic surgery in Hollywood is a lot like steroids in wrestling: almost nobody admits to having done it, but almost all of the top-tier stars have at least dabbled in it.

On having money: yes, being worth $300 million makes a HUGE difference on one's ability to recover from a psychological disorder. Mary-Kate has access to and can afford to pay for treatments, specialists, and facilities that 99% of the population can only dream about having. She can literally afford the best in the world. Most girls are lucky if their medical insurance covers any psychiatric treatment at all.

And finally, let me state once again that anorexia nervosa is a wholely psychological condition. There have never been any unusual chemical or hormonal imbalances detected in the brain cells of anorexia patients. This means, quite literally, that the problem is entirely in their own heads. That doesn't mean that anorexia doesn't exist, or is harmless; like you said Nanks, there have been many cases where people have literally starved themselves to death in their endless quest for physical "perfection". However, I seriously doubt that a world-famous near-billionaire like Mary-Kate Olsen will become one of those tragedies. She realized that she's not eating enough, and sought out help; good for her. But I'll save my real sympathy for girls her age who are rotting to death of cancer.

Game, point, match to J*ingus.

Delivered the goods when being called ignorant, and delivered them good.

I'll show sympathy though for someone who really IS starving to death because they can't afford to eat every day, but not for someone like J*ingus mentioned. (rich bitch who can have whatever she wants in the world, but still thinks she isn't perfect)

I love returning to a thread that I posted early on in and then seeing it erupt into a multi-page piece of arguing. I knew a chick in high school that had the same disorder. She liked me. I didn't care. Although I found it odd that she was throwing up due to eating, not because of looking at me...

Yeah, rich & famous people never die from eating disorders ... right, Karen Carpenter? Having money provides a greater chance to recover from an eating disorder but it doesn't guarantee it.

And I'm still surprised that people are saying the Olsens have big breasts ... they have B-cups at the most, certainly not too big for their body type. Just my opinion, though.

That's only what she told you.

Fake!  They must be fakes!  There's no way a thin girl has big breasts!

not true...the girl i talked about earlier was super-skinny, and a big C-cup, at the least. and they were natural...and beautiful...and she wouldn't give 'em to me...

but i digress.

you ever hear that tribute song her brother wrote? "She's Ain't Heavy, She's My Sister". :D

EDIT: Happy? :P

The joke might go over better if you used the actual punchline. You know, the one that goes, "She Ain't Heavy, She's My Sister."

You see, it's a parody of an actual song called... oh nevermind.

Kids.

Yeah I'm trying to figure out why people think the Olsen's have big breasts too...they seem small to me.

There's only one way to prove it, once and for all ... send Mary Kate and Ashley to Boston, I'll meet up with them tonight and give them each a good feeling up. Even if it takes all night, I'll get to the bottom of things.

Tomorrow, I'll let you know both the size and authenticity.

Damn, why is everyone obsessing over the breasts? I never said that the Olsens had a pair of Mimi Rogers behemoths; I just made the observation that it's highly unusual for a skinny girl...

...check that, a SICKENINGLY skinny girl (hey everyone, let's play Count The Ribs!)...

...to have anything larger than an A-cup. The laws of biology just don't usually work that way. Yes, nl5xsk1, there ARE exceptions, but most superskinny actresses with average-to-large sized breasts didn't get them from Mother Nature. That's why they're called exceptions.

Christ, I'm tired of arguing over this, can we quit now?

Interesting tidbit I heard from a friend, who has a friend that was at an NYU party that Mary-Kate Olsen was at, and this guy said he saw her do coke on the bar!

Therefore, annorexia is a cover up for drug rehab

Who knows though, the guy may have seen someone who LOOKS like an Olsen twin

Well, this is coming from the ever-reliable Star magazine, so take it with a grain of salt.

MARY-KATE OLSEN IN REHAB: BATTLING DRUGS AND ANOREXIA

THE NEW ISSUE OF STAR, ON SALE WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30

EXCLUSIVE DETAILS OF MARY-KATE'S BATTLE WITH DRUGS PLUS PHOTOS IN THE NEW ISSUE OF STAR, ON SALE WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30

(New York, June 29, 2004) - Star magazine reveals that Mary-Kate Olsen- who along with twin sister Ashley, form a multi-millionaire power duo-is being treated for a cocaine addiction in an exclusive facility in Utah.

Mary-Kate is currently residing at the exclusive Cirque Lodge in Utah, which is known for its scenic mountain views and a new-age, intensive-therapy approach to treating drug addiction. She was checked in by her father Dave Olsen on June 11, and spent her 18th birthday there by herself on June 13.

The recommended 30-day program costs $29,850, and patients are free to come and go as they please, if their counselor agrees to give them a pass.

The facility's website says it treats eating disorders in addition to drug and alcohol addictions. As it's been widely reported, Mary-Kate is also battling anorexia.

Wow, my friend Mark jokingly said that MK had a coke addiction and the eating disorder was just a cover.

So that is why she is so damn skinny.
