Dallas-Lakers trade imminent

Recommended Posts

This trade might have been good about 3-4 years ago, but Shaq only has 2 good years in him left.

But Kobe isn't crap without Shaq.

Dallas sounds like a good fit for Shaq, although I'd love to see him go to Memphis or New Orleans as well.

(I'm a Shaq fan from his days at LSU and would either like to see him come "home" or play alongside another top LSU draft pick, Stromile Swift, in Memphis.)

If L.A. can get both Dirk and Nash, like the NYTimes is reporting, for Shaq, then all Lakers fans, including myself, will rejoice.

Cuban's OBSESSION with getting O'Neal is going to bite him in the ass in the end. I just hope Cuban doesn't snap out of it any time soon...

Problem with the deal I see is Nash has to re-sign for it to happen. Nash is an unrestricted free agent, so right now this deal isn't happening until we start to hear that Nash is re-upping with the Mavs. Nash can go wherever the fuck he wants and could end up mucking the potential trade.

I still don't see how it would benefit the Lakers to get Nash and Nowitizki anyway. Payton has already opted to stay and has just about driven Fisher out of town. Nash is going to want to start and should. As I pointed out in my original post, I see Dirk's effectiveness waning because he doesn't make guys better because of needing to be doubled and he needs the ball to be effective. With Kobe getting ready to have the gloves off (no more triangle) to play his "I wanna be like Mike" fantasy, Dirk is not going to see the ball as much as he'd like.

And now its obvious OraleHolmes is just throwing shit on the wall.

First its Shaq for Dirk, Jamison, and Howard. Now its Shaq for Dirk and Nash.

No need to look in on this anymore.

Cuban is a silly, silly guy...

Just out of curiosity, which one of the packages would suit the Lakers the best:

Pau Gasol, Swift, Wells

Dirk Nowitzki, Jamison, Howard

Zach Randolph, Shareef Abdur-Rahim and/or Theo Ratliff

Jermaine O'Neal, Al Harrington

Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, #4 pick

?

Well, the only constant in LA-Dallas trade negotiations is Dirk. So, you can expect Cuban to offer a package including him.

Well, of that, Memphis and ATL get killled

If I am LA, I say Dallas's because, to me, Dirk, Brand and Jermanie are all diffrence makes and awesome players. But Jamison kills Harrignton and the #4 pick. Plus Howards is just as good as magette.

But Kobe isn't crap without Shaq.

He's better without worrying about getting him the ball.

Listen, Shaq's dominant days are over. The Lakers should take Disco Dirk, Nash, and whoever else they can get for him now. He just isn't worth it.

Wouldn't it be great if Shaq gets traded, and decides he is content with his accomplishments and turns back into fat, lazy, underachieving Shaq? You can't tell me it isn't a possibility that is exactly what would happen.

Another thing for people actually believing this is the fact that the trade can't happen due to the combined amount of the contracts needing to be within either 5 or 15% of one another. So Shaq going for 2 Max contract players and another? Ya, ok.

Cuban said he's not willing to give up Dirk for Shaq so LA will either have to throw more than Shaq in there or take a different package.

And Orale, could you please start using ESPN.com, Yahoo or CBSportsline so people can actually look it up. Also these are the credible places for sports news.

Cuban is an idiot. Dirk isn't even a top ten player. Shaq is in the top 3.

Shaq is a declining player who's injury prone and won't be playing in 5 yrs. Dirk is young and with the right cast could be a centerpiece of a championship team.

Dirk is a huge liability on the defensive end. Under a Phil Jackson coached Lakers team, Dirk would spend a lot of time on the bench (read: Slava Medvedenko).

No one on Dallas plays defense and that's because their coach fucking sucks. Shaq is about 2 seasons away from being a totaly liability on the defensive side of the court where Dirk can still be molded by a new coach and a more defensive minded strategy.

Please, even with Dirk, the Mavericks were decimated by a Kings team that had a crippled Webber, the "playoff choker" Peja, and no Bobby Jackson. And the Kings were 27th in the league in defense.

The three-four year window of opportunity the Mavs will have with Shaq will be greater than a 10 year "window of opportunity" with Dirk. That's four years of possibly winning a championship, as opposed to 10 years of likely mediocrity.

Don't tell me a lineup of

Shaq

Finley

Nash

Walker or Kurt Thomas

Marquis Daniels

won't be able to feasibly compete for a championship...

ah Don Nelson, I can remember the good old Knicks days...you know his awesome half a season when they sucked ass because he didn't know what to do with defensive minded players and then they dropkicked his ass to the curb and brought in Van Gundy who got them out of the depths of the East and into the playoffs that same season...

I'd never get rid of Shaq for Nowitski, that's the stupidest thing ever...sure they need to improve to get over their hump but getting rid of 3 solid players for one Shaq seems like taking 2 steps forward and 5 steps back...

The problem with Dallas this year was that they had TOO MANY offensive options. By getting rid of Dirk, Jamison, and Howard, in addition to trading Walker for Thomas, they'll have a gritty front-line (Shaq, Thomas) and an athletic backcourt (Finley, Nash). Along with the burgeoning Daniels, the Mavs will still have four offensive options just in the starting lineup.

That would be a terrible lineup. They'd never be able to keep Shaq on the floor in the current system. He'd be sucking air after 2 minutes in the current Dallas lineup.

That's why you throw the current system out of the window and start to play a half-court oriented game to accomodate Shaq; otherwise, what would be the point of acquiring him? To plug him into a running system? The only reason why Dallas played "run n gun" basketball was to compensate for their MAJOR lack of depth in the front court. As the Lakers once put it, "Dallas is the softest team in the NBA."

Then Dallas has to dump the whole team and start from scratch. You can't just throw Shaq on the team and expect to be contenders. If you can't win it next season with Shaq then he's probably not worth getting.

Giving up Dirk for the walking headache Shaq may make Dallas dumber than I thought was possible for one team to be.

I'm a Mavs fan and I can honestly say, leave Mr. "maybe I'll play in the playoffs, we'll see" on the Lakers. Shaq didn't win jack without Kobe and I rather have Dirk than old man foot trouble.

Did you even watch the NBA finals? O'Neal was the only bright spot for LA, Kobe did jack shit besides game 2.

And who won the NBA Finals and which game did the Lakers win?

Shaq by himself is nothing, when Kobe was off the Lakers died a cruel death.

With this trade, it really depends on if the Mav's are willing to give up a player who will be around for 5-7 years at least for a player who maybe has 3 years left in his tank. I think the Lakers would get the better of this deal, only because not only do they get Dirk, who might be soft on defense, but is a great offensive player, but they also get Jammeson, who can score and play two forward positions, and a up and comming rookie in Howard. So I do feel in the longterm, the Lakers would get the better of the deal.

But I do believe the Mavs want to win now, so getting Shaq might give them that needed boost. Despite Shaq beginning his downward portion of his career, he still can go for 20-10 every night. And without Kobe trying to hog the spotlight, Shaq becomes the main man, who will get the ball more. I do agree that Shaq will use the trade to motivate him, as he will want to show that he was the main reason for LA's success. But then again, Shaq might also come into next season out of shape. Shaq is more effective in the 320 lb range, as opposed to the 350+ range he has been known to hit. And at his age, I do believe that his longevity depends on keeping the weight off. But I do feel that Shaq will be happier in a new setting, and sometimes a new setting is a good thing (see: Wallace, Rasheed).

On a side note, another trade rumour that is going around here is that the Warriors are offering Dampier, Robinson, Claxton, and Pietrus for Shaq. But I am thinking the Dallas rumour is more plausable, but if the Warriors made this happen I believe the Warriors would make the playoffs. As for the Midwest, man, if all these trades come true, this will be the best division in Basketball. With the T-Wolves, Mavs, Spurs, Rockets, Grizzlies, Nuggets, and the Jazz, this division could send at least 5 teams to the playoffs, with the possibility of more making the playoffs. So next season will be very interesting.

despite shaq being the only guy who could consistently score at will on the best team defense in the league, while kobe was shooting something like 4 for 20?

As long as Shaq weighs 300+ pounds, he will be dominant. Do the trade and shake up the NBA!

What will happen is that the Mavericks will be worse then they were and the Lakers will be the same team they were for the past 3 years. Don Nelson does not know how to use a Center who does not shot the 3.

To me it looks like the Rockets will take the spot as the #3 team in the region and the Mavs will drop to #5 or #6 in the West.

You do know that T-Mac alone doesn't make up for the numbers that Stevie Franchise and Cuttino put up right? Its also alot easier to defend one scorer than two. If Houston now grabs a really good PG then they'll be all set, until then though they aren't going into the top 4 seeding for the playoffs.
