Red Baron 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2004 http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=89109 Bonk traded to Habs in three-team deal TSN.ca Staff 6/26/2004 RALEIGH, N.C. (CP) - The Montreal Canadiens acquired forward Radek Bonk and goaltender Cristobal Huet on Saturday in a three-way trade that sent goaltender Mathieu Garon and the 95th overall pick in the draft to the Los Angeles Kings. Ottawa initially sent Bonk to Los Angeles for the 77th pick in the draft before the Kings flipped him to the Habs for Garon and a pick. Bonk was due to become a restricted free agent July 1 and the Senators would have had to pay him a $3.5-million US qualifying offer to retain his rights. The Czech centre had 12 goals with 32 assists in 66 regular-season games with the Senators in the 2003-04 season. In the playoffs, he had just two assists in seven games. Bonk was the third overall pick by the Senators in the 1997 NHL entry draft. Huet, from France, posted a 10-16-10 record for the Kings with a 2.43 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage. Garon appeared in 19 regular-season games with the Canadiens as backup to Jose Theodore. The Montreal netminder went 8-6-2 with a 2.27 goals-against average with a .921 save percentage. Garon, drafted 44th overall by the Canadiens in 1996, is due to make $1.1 million in his next season in the NHL I'm pretty indifferent about this. I think the combination of Theodore/Garon was excellent, so getting rid of Garon, i saw no point, unless it was salary dump. Getting Bonk however, got the team a lot stronger, and more depth for a second line centre, which Perrault wasn't. I wished they traded Boullion or something. With this move by the Habs, who gets called up, Fichaud?
the max 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2004 Don't get your hopes up too high for Bonk. One of the biggest clutch non-performers in the league, refuses to step up under pressure, and does not lead his team. I would have liked Muckler to have gotten more for him, but, he's gone and that's the important thing. I hope Muckler can get Bondra and De Vries resigned. Slingshot Suplex 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2004 Why would they call up Fichaud who's been basically a career minor leaguer for a decade? Huet did ok for LA...I would think he would be the backup. Bonk does give them some depth at least ,depending on his motivation, maybe more.
Dogbert 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2004 Oh boy, just what the Habs need: another big, soft, useless guy with no heart.
Guest AllCanadian Report post Posted June 27, 2004 To be honest the Habs would be better off letting Bonk be a FA and take that 3.5 onto the market and get someone who will play night in night out.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted June 27, 2004 When I take over the world, my first decree is that one out of every (insert number here) families has to change it's name to "Bonk"
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2004 It's especially fun when you're playing NHL '04 and you check somebody and the commentator goes "BONK!"

I think the Sens have a team option on Bondra, which they said they'd pick up when the traded for him, and I think de Vries signed a multi-year deal with the Rangers last year, so he should be good for a few more years. nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted June 28, 2004 So, the Habs get softer, eh? I'm sure that they'll still find a way to beat the Bruins in the post-season, though. I'm just surprised that Bonk was given away for so little by the Sens, and then immediately traded for more than he was worth by the Kings. Good trade for LA, bad trade for the Sens, and the jury's still out for the Habs. And how "Radek Bonk" is considered a cooler hockey name than "Miroslav Satan" is beyond me. Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted June 28, 2004 And how "Radek Bonk" is considered a cooler hockey name than "Miroslav Satan" is beyond me. I'm like you. I always thought Miroslav Satan was the coolest name. As for the trade, I'll commend the Kings for getting Giron and a pick out of that. Just wonder if they'll start Giron a lot or not. I totally forget what they have in net.
