Lots of people consider his 7/29/93 match w/Kobashi a 5-star match. I have it at ****3/4.

3/17/96 vs Rey Misterio Jr.

What was the context (what show, was their an angle or a fued)

I am a little hazy about 96 right now.

First off, to correct myself it was 3/16/96 not 3/17.

The match is in AAA and it is fantastic. The mat work mixed in with the high spots, the way each man builds to his moves, it is just great. I believe it is a climax to a long feud between the two, but I haven't seen enough lucha to comment on the feud and how much it built to this match. The actual work here, though, tells a great story and it works perfectly. I highly recommend finding this match.

I take star ratings with a grain of sault but could someone tell me how the Flair classics can stand next to others that could be considered as 5*?

Well, they are good.. :D All the moves have meaning, a good story is told, the psychology is solid, and the work is very, very good. How do they not match up?

He should be on like, all of your lists, LOL. His series with Steamboat was beyond stupdenous.

Meh, he's not on my list b/c Jumbo & Tenryu were blowing the Flair/Steamboat stuff out of the water in '89, laying the groundwork for a style that would produce more great matches than any other. And I dig Chi Town Rumble. A lot. It's just that, *in the context of its time*, Flair/Steamboat has a hard time competing when you look at the far more transcendent work around it.

Can we stop naming the same guys over and over again. If someones already been named, you don't need to name them again.

Anyways, this is all the names so far:

Toshiaka Kawada

Mitsuhara Misawa

Akira Taue

Kenta Kobashi

Stan Hansen

Steve Austin

Bret Hart

Eddy Guerrero

Rey Misterio

Juventud Guerrera

Chris Benoit

Jumbo Tsurata

Manami Toyota

Toshiyo Yamada

Dynamite Kansai

Mayumi Ozaki

Akira Hokuto

Shinobu Kandori

Jun Akiyama

Kiyoshi Tamura

Tsuyoshi Kohsaka

HBK

Masahiro Chono

Jushin Liger

Ric Flair

Ricky Steamboat

Randy Savage

Mick Foley

Dynamite Kid

Shocker

Some of these names are unquestionable (Misawa, Kawada, Austin...), some are questionable to say the least (Flair, Savage, Michaels...) and some i've simply not seen enough of to decide (Shocker). Now can we please stick to either discussing reasons whether or not we would include one of the names here already, or adding new names to have their merits discussed.

I'd include:

Shinjiro Ohtani.

Agile, mean, and tough. Had a great handful of matches with Liger (Iknow, everyone else did too, but he truly could bring it to the level of LIger.)

EDIT: You can't include Chono, and not Muto, since their match together at the G-1 Climax Finals is the best of Chono's career, to my knowledge.

Of course, I could be missing a match, I'm hardly the authority on puro.

Has Kurt Angle ever gone *****?

there may be some resistance in this but at King of The Ring 2001 Angle and Shane McMahon put on a hell of a match it may have been gimmicky (i.e the overhead suplex through the glass set) but I thought it was a great match maybe not quiet 5 star but an excellent match nonetheless

Isn't that the match where Shane McMahon out-wrestled an olympic gold medalist? I always thought that match was overrated. Angle's best match was against Austin at SS 01 and I'd put that at ****+, but not 5. His match with Benoit at RR 03 was also very good, but not 5*.

I love Randy Savage to death but he's simply far better at getting loads over (Ultimate Warrior, Hogan, DDP) than he is at having a bunch of blow away matches with good co-workers. If the WWF had a bit better talent roster back in the Wrestlemania III-V era I think we would have had a much better look at Savage but even what he did with big lugs is pretty impressive in my eyes.

some people place Angle/Benoit at *****. The only thing that ruins Angle/Austin at SS 01 is the(if I remember correctly) DQ finish.

You might be right if it wasn't an overhyped piece of crap match that's *** and that's only because I'm in an extremely generous mood right now. Actually strike that down to **1/2 and leave the I'm in an extremely generous mood.

You know, that's one of those matches that is hard to rate. It's definitely entertaining, but most of that is for the novelty of it. I don't think there is any way I'd call it 5* (or even 4) but it certainly was something to see.
