From WCW Uncensored '99

***First match, Mikey Whipwreck (WCW debut) Vs. Billy Kidman, enjoying a 4-month reign as WCW Cruiserweight Champion.***

Whipwreck comes out to no music. He also comes out frowning and making angry faces at the crowd. His gimmick is HE IS A LOVEABLE UNDERDOG. Sigh. God, Heenan is making comments like "I like this guy..." Second mistake, burying Mikey, who is a pretty good talent that the fans could have gotten behind, by putting him against Kidman in the first match, who is mega-over as a face. Oh, one more. The bookers also fucked Mikey over by starting off the show with him and his more ground-based attack, when in the past months Kidman had kicked off the show with high-flying affairs, facing the likes of Mysterio, Juventud, Psychosis, and Eddie Guerrero. No music. Tried making him a heel. No fanfare. Facing a mega-over champion. Different style then the rest of the division. Good job, WCW.

and wasn't that his ONLY match in WCW? i'm hard-pressed to think of another one.

i thought they signed him just to fuck with ECW.

To Mikey's credit, he didn't play the heel role badly and the match was great.

Plus the Cruiser division already had Kidman, Rey and Juvi so they needed heels more than they did faces. So that's some excuse. I guess.

Don't get me started on WCW's misuse of Mikey.

First off. He works the match after 3 months on his ass and no introduction to the WCW faithful. For the shot they gave him he couldn't have done any better. That 15 minute match completly stole the show.

Other than that he did some ppv jobs where he'd switch from heel to face for no reason...the whole time not getting on Nitro or Thunder...so people didn't know who he was.

Heel or face, it wouldn't matter. If they gave him a shot to get over on TV a few times...with BETTER OPPONENTS than Disco Inferno, Van Hammer, and Chase Tatum, who knows.

He said the only reason he didn't leave sooner was cause he was getting married and needed the money.

For those who know me here, I'm the biggest friggin Mikey mark there is. And I was still watching WCW up untill I saw how poorly they were using him.

How many matches did he win in wcw? I can only think of one against Bobby Blaze on Saturday Night when he used the top rope whippersnapper.

Seconded. Mikey looked like a star in that match.

Mikey also won a match against a Villano on Saturday Night.

The thing is, signing Mikey made absolutely no sense. Scott Keith made note of it, and this is the same feeling I got. Mikey was never a tremendous talent, and never showed a huge amount of charisma prior to the genius gimmick Paul gave him, Tajiri, and Mitchell in ECW. So why sign the guy when there are twenty guys on the roster who can do just about the same thing?

If he won anything it was on Saturday Night...although no one watched.

I actually have a 90 minute Mikey in WCW tape/

Heh, 90 minutes...

Is that ALL of his WCW matches?

Posted

90 minutes? How many Sid run ins are there? Mikey and Disorderly Conduct seemed to be his favourite victims and whenever they were on Nitro or Thunder you could see the Crowd waiting for the run in.

Mikey actually only got squashed by Sid once if I remember correctly.

And yes, Mikey did only win two matches his entire time in WCW - Against a Villano, and against Bobby Blaze.

I always thought Mikey was a good guy who could get over in ECW or on the idies, but would never transfer to the big 2. Now, we'll never know, because WCW didn't give hin the proper chance, but that was just always the feeling I had about him.

like i said, just to fuck with ECW. they took Saturn, Raven, Richards, the PE, Sandman, Benoit, Guerrero, Jericho, Malenko, Misterio, Psicosis, Awesome, and Sabu (at first) just to show ECW that they could take anyone they wanted at any time. they were virtually saying "we got more money, more benefits and better recognition then you, and every star you make, we'll just pull out from under you, so nyah!" McMahon did the same thing. it's one of the main reasons ECW isn't around today (not to meniton that Heyman couldn't balance a check-book to save his life, but that's a whole nother diatribe). not that i'm bitter or anything!

Mikey said on Trash Talking Radio that he basically doesn't have to work anymore because of the huge amount of money that he got from WCW. He wasn't even a midcarder there, but still he's financially secure. I guess you can't blame those who "sold out"...

Don't forget Storm, Douglas, Spicolli, and Bigelow... and I'm sure there are more.

With the right writing anyone can get over. For someone similar to Mikey's size, Spike Dudley was pretty over at the beginning of his run in WWE.

Wow. And he got fired after less than a year.

I know that this going to sound really stupid, but I could swear I read somewhere that there was a rumor back in '99 that Mikey was going to be repackaged into a gimmick where he would dress up like a giant bottle of Surge (since WCW and Surge had that cross-promotional deal at the time). It sounds very far-fetched, but WCW did do a lot of weird stuff near the end.

You're not nuts.

From a Scott Keith 1999 Thunder rant:

- Speaking of the ECW rejects, a bizarre rumor on RSPWM said that WCW wants to repackage Mikey Whipwreck as a life-sized bottle of Surge. And you know what the sad part is? IT'D BE A STEP UP FOR HIM!

God, you find some absolutely golden stuff while searching on Google groups.

I don't think that WCW was stupid for making Mikey a heel, they just did it in an assbackwards way. If they could have found a way for him to keep his crazy-heel persona from ECW, it would have been fine.

He didn't get fired. He asked for his release. That was a little while after they said anyone who wanted to could leave, and Raven did.

For a guy not blessed with much natural talent, he often managed to have great matches...yeah, I said great.

Crazy-heel persona came after leaving WCW.

I'm shocked Mikey asked for his release. They must've paid him a whole lot of fucking money for that year he was there. I'm sure his ECW paydays weren't bad for the year or so he was back there before the checks started to bounce, but regardless.
