5 Out of the 6 Hijackers on 9/11

Recommended Posts

Its amazing how such a disaster could have been averted by just arresting these 6, not a criticsm or anything, cos I dont believe anyone was to blame for 9/11, only those fuckers who flew those planes, but its fascinating how one little incident, seemingly meaningless can influence the entire world for years to come

A video has emerged showing security checks on one group of 11 September hijackers before they boarded the plane they crashed into the Pentagon.

Four men undergo additional checks after setting off metal detectors at Washington's Dulles airport.

On Thursday the commission probing the attacks on New York and Washington is due to make its final report.

The commission is expected to recommend extensive reforms to the United States intelligence services.

It will also list what are described as 10 missed opportunities to detect the plot in the years leading up to the attacks.

Almost 3,000 people died when two hijacked airliners were flown into New York's World Trade Center and one into the Pentagon in Washington, with a fourth crashing into a field in Pennsylvania.

BBC News Online world affairs correspondent Paul Reynolds says the measures proposed in the report would amount to the most significant change since the CIA itself was founded after World War II.

The surveillance video shot at Dulles airport on the morning 11 September shows four of the five hijackers being subjected to additional searches before being allowed onto American Airlines flight 77.

Two of them, Khalid Al-Midhar and Nawaq Alhamzi, had been known to be associated with al-Qaeda since early 1999 by the US National Security Agency.

The two were put on a terrorism watch list just weeks before the attack - on 24 August 2001.

The hijackers were screened with a handheld device, and one man had his bag checked with an explosive trace detector.

A fifth man did not set off any alarms.

Investigators believe that the hijackers were carrying utility knives, which at that time were legal in carry-on baggage.

The crash killed all 64 people on board, and 125 employees at the Pentagon.

'Chilling'

The video was obtained by the Associated Press from lawyers Motley Rice, who are representing some survivors' families in their efforts to sue airlines over the 11 September attacks.

"Even after setting off these alarms, the airlines and security screeners failed to examine the hijackings' baggage... or discover the weapons they would use in their attack," said lawyer Ron Motley.

Victims' relatives have reacted angrily to the video.

"It's chilling... to see how the ease with which these people were able to commit the first step of this horrific crime," Sally Regenhard, who lost her son in the World Trade Center attacks, told the BBC's World Today programme.

Intelligence czar

Congress leaders viewed the final report, by the bipartisan National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, on Tuesday. White House aides were due to be shown it on Wednesday.

It is almost 600 pages long, and follows testimony from more than 1,000 witnesses and examination of as many classified documents.

It will propose a radical shake-up of US intelligence, including the appointment of a new intelligence czar to over oversee 15 spy agencies.

According to the Washington Post newspaper, it will also list 10 instances where the government could have unravelled the plot.

Six of these came during the current administration of President George W Bush, the other four under his predecessor Bill Clinton.

The commission is also expected to lay out new claims about possible links between al-Qaeda and Iran.

President Bush is promising to listen to the recommendations, although last month he disputed findings by the commission that there was no link between al-Qaeda and former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Correspondents say that in the middle of an election campaign the incumbent president has the most to lose from the report

Why is this footage only being released now and why is there no time and date stamp on the footage? :)

Aipport security cannot be blamed of course - they did their searches and obviously had no way of knowing what was going to happen. Hands up who HASN'T set off an airport alarm before. I know I have.

*raises hand*

Never happened to me. But then again, I'm white.

Could you imagine the outrage if it were released right after 9/11? People would have had those screeners' heads. It is doubtless that the footage was locked up this long since they wouldn't want anyone to see it. It would further show how the government and airline security failed to prevent these attacks.

One thing that always bothered me about 9/11 though...how in 3 out of 4 cases, a cabin full of people were too afraid of 5 guys with box cutters. Then again, I think they told everyone they had a bomb on board.

I believe they were told to sit down and be quiet, and that everything would be fine. They had no idea they were being hijacked by terrororists willing to kill themselves and everyone else with them.

I watched it on the news, but I can't cite the date. Maybe CNN.

Well, why don't we put you in a hijacked plane, with little knowledge of what weapons the terrorists had (I'm pretty sure they didn't brag about the fact they only had box cutters), and even less knowledge of what they were going to do with you, and see how heroic you are.

Easy Tex,

I already said I think they were told there were bombs on board. It was a speculation, not an acusation. No need to fly off the handle.

Also, I think it was pretty alien to Americans at the time that people would willingly kill themselves for an ideal.

It's amazing that, even now, we subject Arab males to no extra scrutiny at airports. Children and Chinese grandmothers are not terrorists. We know what the terrorists who did this look like, we know what the ones who have been doing dry runs at assembling bombs on board a plane look like, yet we refuse to do anything about it because of political correctness. Tremendous.

As for being a hero on a plane, it's hard to say. The fourth flight was driven into the ground by the passengers, but because of cell phones, they already knew the fate that awaited them. The people on the first three flights were probably operating under the "cooperate and you won't get hurt" presumption.

True.

I am a 6 foot, 200 lb, lilly-white male, but I get pulled out of line a fair amount just so they make sure there's no bombs in my Doc Martens. They have a look like they aren't expecting to find anything, and I get the impression that they pick people they think won't have anything because they're just tired and don't want to deal with anyone that DOES. Of course they never find anything with this policy. Random screenings are just too...well, random.

Has airport checks really improved or is it still the same morons who just quickly wave people through only with a superiority complex because they now know they can screw with anyone they want?

Also, how do you miss a box cutter? That is not exactly a small item to take onto a plane at all.

It's obvious why this was released later if it's true footage. The personal who let them past would have been hung right in the parking lot.

I didn't think they confiscated box-cutters before 9/11...

Which I still don't understand why they didn't since why the hell do you need a box cutter on an airplane to begin with.

We went from not taking the right items to taking items they don't need to take. I'm sorry, but when you are taking a nail file from people you have officially went stupid.

If you get kidnapped with a nail file, I feel so sorry for you.

I remember travelling to London my brother had to open his bag because there were some safety pins attached to the inside somewhere, and get rid of them. Now, on the plane you could purchase a 40 of Crown Royal that when broken in half would make a far more effective weapon than any safety pin ever could.
