Guest Salacious Crumb Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 Since they've been doing all these top 25 lists I thought we could try one of our own. Who in your opinion are the Top 25 ESPN Golden Boys? These are the guys that always get good press despite their shortcomings, declining abilities, etc. My list: 1. Michael Jordan - he did destroy the Wizards franchise 2. Kobe Bryant - portrayed as a hero despite being on trial for rape 3. Steve McNair - Salsburies mancrush on him is really annoying 4. Warren Sapp - nonstop airtime during football season despite average play 5. Coach K 6. Randy Moss 7. Bill Parcells 8. Kurt Warner 9. Brett Favre 10. Barry Bonds - always out to make him seem like a nice guy 11. Sammy Sosa - constantly ignore his shitty fielding 12. Steve Spurrier - making a top coaching list despite his run with the Redskins 13. Shaq 14. Phil Jackson - I'd like to see how he did with an average team 15. Mike Shannahan - the Broncos are always overrated and he seems to always escape blame for the team falling apart 16. Bill Billichek - all to willing to forget how big a disaster he was in Cleveland 17. Michael Vick - average numbers so far but treated like the best QB ever 18. Eli Manning - commentators seemed more critical of the fans booing than Manning acting like a spoiled brat. 19. Jeremy Shockey - 4 TDs in 2 seasons doesn't make him a great TE 20. Daunte Culpepper - a lot of hype that ignores that he's an INT machine 21. Donovan McNabb - always the reason why the Eagles will get to the Super Bowl despite never showing up in the big playoff games 22. Karl Malone - act like he's the greatest guy despite his long history of dirty elbows 23. Lebron James - more hype than Dewayne Wade despite not getting to the playoffs 24. Brian Urlacker 25. Scotty Bowman - how was he so high on the top 25 coaches list? Honorable mentions: John Stockton Bill Cowher - same reason as Shannahan Tom Coughlin - same as the previous
the max Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 Bowman got that high by being a winner in every job he had, seemingly. Plus, he jump-started the Red Wings dynasty.
Bored Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 I'd say Bonds is the current #1. Jordan is out of the spotlight right now. McNabb should definenlty be higher.
Crimson Platypus Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 I'd put Coach K at the top. While I admit (rather grudgingly) that he is a good coach and a great recruiter, the verbal blowjobs he gets from ESPN, and Dickie V in particular are obscene, and should not be seen by children under the age of 13.
Steve J. Rogers Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 10. Barry Bonds - always out to make him seem like a nice guy Yeah, I love how no matter how HARD THEY try Bonds is always going to be a "I don't give a crap" kind of guy Maybe he softens up in old age ala Williams (though TECHNICALLY he was still an orney bastard) who knows By the way, should add Grant Hill on that list, probably the best of the "Next Jordans" besides "King James" and he still blew it thanks to injuries! Steve
Crimson G Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 What about Tracy McGrady? Why must I see 10 minutes of an hour-long show devoted to highlights of McGrady dunking over the Miami Heat? Do I care? No.
strummer Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 I would add Jeter to that list. He's a very good player, but is not an all time great.
Guest Redhawk Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 You forgot the all-time No. 1 person that ESPN can't get enough of.... Jack Nicholson. Anyway, how about a "Bottom 25": Those ESPN seems on a mission to shit on, especially for things that are old by now, and no matter how much the person has redeemed themselves... 1. The Los Angeles Clippers 2. Mike Tyson 3. Tonya Harding 4. Bill Buckner 5. John Rocker 6. The XFL 7. "So-and-so has never won a championship" 8. The "curses" in Boston and Chicago 9. Rush Limbaugh 10. The mere suggestion that Phil Jackson is overrated 11. Troy Hambrick 12. Ryan Leaf 13. Mark Cuban 14. Carl Everett 15. Allen Iverson's attitide toward practice 16. The Portland Trail Blazers 17. The Cincinnati Bengals 18. Vince Carter 19. John Stockton's shorts 20. The WNBA 21. The indisputable reality that golf is NOT a sport 22. Jerry Krause 23. Darryl Strawberry 24. Shawn Kemp 25. Vin Baker Also receiving votes: Oliver Miller Rick Pitino Al Davis Randy Moss Kwame Brown Antoine Walker Corey Dillon
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 10. Barry Bonds - always out to make him seem like a nice guy I've never seen him hit anyone, or get arrested. So he's surly to the media. Big deal. If I had to deal with the media on a daily basis, I'd sure as hell get annoyed at them.
Guest Salacious Crumb Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 I'd put Bob Knight as No.1 on the ESPN constantly shits on category just for the movie. I've never seen him hit anyone, or get arrested. So he's surly to the media. Big deal. If I had to deal with the media on a daily basis, I'd sure as hell get annoyed at them. He's still an ass though. There's a difference from calling him a great player and always trying to make him a sympathetic figure. They always try to portray him as this big misunderstood guy who's really nice deep down.
KingPK Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 16. Bill Billichek - all to willing to forget how big a disaster he was in Cleveland Four Superbowl rings (or is it three? How many did he win with Parcells?), two as a head coach after said "disaster" occured, kind of makes it easy to forget.
Guest Redhawk Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 John Daly should go on the "Golden Boys" list.
The Czech Republic Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 If I had to deal with the media on a daily basis, I'd sure as hell get annoyed at them. If the media was talking to me every day, and my comments were perpetually published, I'd be happier than a pig in shit. Everybody would hear about everything that's on my mind, and I wouldn't have it any other way. To hell with guys refusing the media. I'd flag reporters down! "Hey! Hey you fromt he Tribune! Have I got a quote for YOU!" I agree with most of the ESPN Golden Boys. However, John Stockton was a decent guy and there's nothing to complain about if ESPN recognizes his greatness. Malone, not so much.

If I had to talk to the media every day, and they constantly took my bad quotes and made me look like an ass, I'd eventually put two and two together and stop saying remarkably stupid things.
The Czech Republic Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 Wait a minute. TIGER WOODS! Why isn't HE up there? Williams Sisters too, apparently when you're black in a white sport you're automatically awesome. Unless you're Jarome Iginla in which you're Canadian, which cancels the black out to make him just a white guy, as if Canadian is just white to a higher degree. It also doesn't help when you play hockey.
Art Sandusky Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 That #2 reasoning is bullshit, but whenever someone prominent is put on trial it's assumed they did it, so whatever. He's top 5 at least, but being on trial for something doesn't make you bad. And Favre deserves all the talk they give him.
Guest Anglesault Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 Leaving Woods and the Williams Brothers off an ESPN golden boys list is criminal.
The Czech Republic Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 Yeah they only had the balls to put Tiger Woods winning a bunch of golf tournaments ahead of Wayne Gretzky racking up so many goals and assists than the assists alone outnumber anyone else's combined figure. I think records, I think Gretzky. He's got every major record in the book.
Vern Gagne Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 Randy Moss only makes the headlines for the negatives. Some deserved, others blown out of proportion.
alfdogg Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 You forgot the all-time No. 1 person that ESPN can't get enough of.... Jack Nicholson. Vin Baker Also receiving votes: Oliver Miller Rick Pitino Al Davis Randy Moss Kwame Brown Antoine Walker Corey Dillon The Sacramento Kings could make this list too.
JustJoe2k5 Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 I would put the Carolina Panthers on the least recognized list, ESPN always seems to forget that the Patriots won the Super Bowl by a field goal with four seconds to go when they talk about how unstoppable the team was.
Guest Redhawk Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 Aside from Stephen A. Smith ("They're SOFT. SOFT AS A BABY WIPE. The Kings are just SOFT AS MY PILLOW!"), I think the folks at ESPN generally like the Kings. They're an exciting TV team, and I first started hearing Bibby and Peja overhype on ESPN.
Guest Anglesault Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 "Williams Brothers." Awful. I don't know if it's something in the water in tennis, but those two, along with Jennifer Capriati and Lyndsey Davenport rank as some of the ugliest, most beastly women I've ever seen.
Art Sandusky Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 Because it's a beauty contest, after all. You become really successful and you happen to be attractive, people hate on you for it. You become really successful and you happen to be unattractive, people hate on you for it.

You become really successful and you happen to be unattractive, people hate on you for it. I don't hate on them. I have no opinion on them as people or tennis players. I just think they're extremely unattractive women. If they weren't celebrities and I saw them on the street, I'd think they were extremely unattractive women
