I'm curious as to why the Marlins are so eager to be included in this deal, since the're role is basically to be bent over and taking dp from the Snakes and Yankees.

To what?

Anyway, al, I'm sure you can name at least a couple of those pitchers there. Would you like to to the honors?

Oh damn, somebody wants me banned, oh no what will I do? How will I live?

And 'Sault I've already made clear that I don't view stats as a be-all end-all, so those won't work here. But just playing along, do you think a great pitcher gave up 10 runs or whatever in EVERY playoff game he played?

Hey I'll give $20,000--I'm making the check out right now--to ANYONE that can find where I said Pedro Martinez sucks. I said he merely wasn't GREAT. Good, very good? Yes. Great? No. Got any takers?

I actually couldn't name them without looking up stats. If you gave me the game numbers, I could do it.

As for Pedro, Baseball-reference.com has a statistic called Adjusted ERA, which adjusts ERA for Park Factors and compares it to the league average. 100 is average, 110 would be 10% better than average, etc. Pedro's is 174, the best of all time. Lefty Grove is second, at 148. Pedro's W/L percentage is 3rd All Time. Only Nolan Ryan allowed less hits per nine innings. Only Randy Johnson struck out more batters per nine innings. To suggest that Pedro is anything less than great is ridiculous.

Rather than spend another three hours looking up game numbers, I'll just say it.

The first is Perry, the next big group is Carlton, then it's Clemens, and finally Randy Johnson. Two HOFers and two first ballot entries.

I'm really worried with about what George will do if he can't get the Unit. I just heard a rumor about Kevin Millwood and then theres the one about Ramon Ortiz, like they're supposed to solve anything.

Vazquez, Contreras, Moose, Brown, Lieber and El Duque will all be ready for the postseason. 1 or 2 of them will move to the bullpen anyway (probably Lieber and El Duque). Adding another pitcher who ISN'T Unit will just cause more problems than it solves.

From rotoworld.com:

Pending his approval, Charles Johnson has been traded to the Dodgers, ESPN's Jim Bowden is reporting.

The move to acquire Charles Johnson likely signals that the Dodgers are moving close to finalizing a deal that would send Paul Lo Duca, Guillermo Mota and Juan Encarnacion to the Marlins.

The Dodgers would get Steve Finley, Brad Penny and Hee Seop Choi in the three-team deal involving Arizona. If the deal is expanded to include Randy Johnson, Penny would then move on to Arizona. If it's just Finley, the Diamondbacks would get Jayson Werth and prospects (Bill Murphy?).

I've gotta question the logic behind leaving Farnsworth in there for so long, even having him bat, when they could've brought in Rusch for the eighth. As it is, thanks to Farns, it's back to a three-run game. Thankfully, Rusch comes in to get the last out, in the form of Thome, who represente the tying run.

and the Mets trade Scott Kazmir to Tampa for Victor Zambrano

let me just say that this may be one of the worst trades of our time.

not that the Marlins trade is much better.

ESPN Radio in Pittsburgh says the deal is official.  Benson and 2 minor leaguers to the Mets for 3B Ty Wiggington and a AA pitching prospect.

Of course the important part of the deal for Mets fans is...Anna Benson at Mets games.

Sorry for my last post in here. For whatever reason, I thought this was the weekly MLB thread. My bad, as the kids like to say.

That deal with the Marlins and Dodgers is interesting, as I thought Mota wouldn't be on the block. Sorta funny to see Encarnacion heading back to the Florida.

You have a lot more faith in that group than i do.

As a rival fan, the only pitcher in that rotation that I fear come playoff time is Brown if he's healthy. El Duque...a little.

Red Sox got to Mussina last year in the postseason, Vazquez and Lieber have no postseason experience, and Contreras is a joke.

Duque is a really good money pitcher. I'd put him up there with Brown.

Also, If we can keep it tied/close, you do have to worry about Gordon and Rivera looming.

Still, I'm not thrilled with this rotation.

Brown and Duque are money pitchers to a certain extent. But, the other guys in the rotation I don't fear.

Gordon and Rivera yeah, I don't look forward to seeing, but they're human and can't pitch forever.

I think Vazquez is as good as any other Yankee pitcher.

When Javy's good, he's good, but when he isn't, he kind of implodes.

They just have to pitch through October.

I mean game-wise.

If the starters get jumped on early, Rivera and Gordon are useless.

Quantrill.

He's gotten knocked around a bit by the Red Sox, hasn't he?

He's also handled them pretty well this year.

He's not a great pitcher with runners on base, but if they have him start an inning, he's really good.

So, theoretically, if Mussina were to get rocked in the third, you'd see someone like Proctor finish the inning, Quantrill take 4-5-beginning of 6 and let Gordon and Rivera figure out the rest.

Goddamn I wish she, I mean he, would have been traded to the Twins...

YES!!!! Time to get some trophy polish for the Phillies.

Apprently they have traded Anderson Machado and Josh Hancock to Cincy for Todd Jones and a prospect.

Ed Wade: I swear, this isn't like when I traded for Mike Williams. Honest.
