Precious Roy Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 This trade sucks. I hate Esteban Loiza, he's a fucking bum
the max Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 Maybe you could spell his name right. Loaiza. I'd rather have him than Contreras.
the pinjockey Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 I had to laugh when the ESPN people made it sound like this was a steal for NY. Granted, it is a solid deal since they are dumping Contreras' contact which is sizeable IIRC. But Loaiza had such a fluke last year, it is looking like, that to say getting him for Jose is a steal is ludicrous.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 I have literally no idea why either team made this trade.
Bruiser Chong Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 I think the Boss just felt compelled to make a trade of some kind with the Mets making all these last-minute trades. They need some help with the starting pitching, but I don't think either guy is much of an upgrade for their respective new teams.
The Czech Republic Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 I don't think Jose Contreras is gonna help the White Sox catch the Twins. Buehrle, Garland, and Garcia better pick up the slack for them or the south side is finished.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 the south side is finished. That's why this trade makes no sense. the question is why the Yankees trade a guy who is good and bad for a guy who is neither. Would he even start for them in the playoffs?
Lt. Al Giardello Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 I love Jose Contreras. No idea why the Yanks would get rid of him. He's awesome.
Precious Roy Posted July 31, 2004 Author Report Posted July 31, 2004 Only reason I see for this is Contreras' constant struggles vs. Boston, especially on Sunday where he couldn't throw a friggin' strike at Fenway. Ironically enough the only guy he pitched well against was Nomar. I still think he has better upside than Esteban who had one good year and is the definition of average, and if everyone's healthy Loaiza will probably pitch out of the bullpen in October.....
Guest Anglesault Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 I love Jose Contreras. No idea why the Yanks would get rid of him. He's awesome. All the meltdowns had gotten to be too much. Even when he's pitching well, you always get that feeling that we're on the verge of an implosion. And that whole Red Sox thing just isn't appealing at all, considering there's a very real chance that we see them in the ALCS.
Guest Staravenger Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 And that whole Red Sox thing just isn't appealing at all, considering there's a very real chance that we see them in the ALCS. Again. Not to get off topic, but I hate when the same teams always play in the big series', no matter how appealing the hatred between the teams is. I don't see how getting Loiaza is any better than Contreras. Come time for the Playoffs niether guy is going to start if Mussina, Brown, and Vazquez are all healthy to be the 3 starters.
the max Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 Red Sox v. Yanks is a great series. The rivalry is there, plus there always seems to be a great game waiting to happen
Guest Anglesault Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 (edited) I don't see how getting Loiaza is any better than Contreras. He eats more innings, definitely. There's also less of a fear of things routinely going to shit mid-game. Edited July 31, 2004 by Anglesault
Guest Staravenger Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 Red Sox v. Yanks is a great series. The rivalry is there, plus there always seems to be a great game waiting to happen The honest answer: I'm worried eventually the Red Sox will get the better of the Yankees in the playoffs. The bullshit answer: I like to see different teams compete?

Guest Anglesault Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 The bullshit answer: I like to see different teams compete? I certainly don't. I like the idea of the biggest rivalry in sports coming to a head every year in October. Certainly better than Anaheim vs. Minnesota.

I like the idea of the biggest rivalry in sports coming to a head every year in October. Certainly better than Anaheim vs. Minnesota. Cubs and Cardinals, Red Sox and Yankees as your LCSs. That's the way it should be. Nobody gives a flying fuck about Anaheim, or Minnesota, or San Diego, or even Atlanta anymore. And if we don't repeat 2003 and have Chicago and Boston, it's really money. I think Cubs can really snag the wild card now, but that's still a huge disappointment, all things considered. HOW THE HELL CAN WE BE DONE WITH ST. LOUIS?!?!? Anyway, congrats to the Yankees for getting Loaiza. he'll help them out. But I don't think Contreras is going to be any help to the White Sox...but at least the Minnesota Twins aren't world beaters right now, so nobody in the AL Central besides the Royals can really concede the division.
Guest GreatOne Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 The bullshit answer: I like to see different teams compete? Dude what the hell is this, WWE? We should start pushing other teams now? 'Those damn Yankees are just holding everybody down, trying to be the star of the show I tell ya!'. Methinks that if certain teams are tired of Yankees in the ALCS just about every year that they should, you know, DO something about it.
Guest Staravenger Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 You missed that I'm FOR THE YANKEES, I'm just getting worried that the Red Sox will eventually get the better part of them sooner than later. Last year I thought the Sox had a good chance of winning, and the Yankees team was better than this year. (Me about an hour or two ago in this thread) The honest answer: I'm worried eventually the Red Sox will get the better of the Yankees in the playoffs.
Hektik Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 Cubs and Cardinals, Red Sox and Yankees as your LCSs. That's the way it should be. Nobody gives a flying fuck about Anaheim, or Minnesota, or San Diego, or even Atlanta anymore. I never got the whole elitist baseball attitude. If I can be brutally honest here, I don't give a flying fuck about a teams history or tradition. Yeah its nice to look at during the offseason but it has absolutely nothing to do with the current season.

I'd much rather see heated rivals every year than random combinations of teams.

Yeah its nice to look at during the offseason but it has absolutely nothing to do with the current season. I'm with him. If the Red Sox and Cubs play, I won't be watching because of the mystique of these storied and historic franchises. I'll watch because I want to see some friggin line drives off the wall.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 Rivalries are good, but I'd just rather see the best teams, regardless of who they are, excepting my beloved Phillies, of course.
Precious Roy Posted August 1, 2004 Author Report Posted August 1, 2004 Yeah, I always want to see the best teams, but when the best teams also have historic rivalrys it's that much sweeter. Nothing comes close to the intensity of Yankees-Sox. Nothing.
Bored Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 And then there are us who avoid Yankee-Red Sox games like the plague.
Precious Roy Posted August 1, 2004 Author Report Posted August 1, 2004 Well, maybe if the A's could actually beat one of those teams in the postseason I'd take them seriously too.... I know, lowblow, sorry
Krankor Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 This is a great deal for the Yankees for two reasons. 1. Loaiza playing on a team that will actually make the playoffs, unlike the sox, may shoot some life into him and he may start pitching like he did last year. When he was unstoppable. 2. If Loaiza continues to flounder his contract is up at the end of the year so that means he's gone. The Yankees have nothing to lose and everything to gain. If the Sox were smart they would have tried getting prospects instead of Contreras. The Southside's stupidity never ceases to amaze me.

I'd much rather see heated rivals every year than random combinations of teams. Yeah. The best rivalries produce the best baseball (or if not the best baseball, some damn good entertainment), so that's what I want to see. The gameplay in Red Sox-Yankees is just naturally going to be more elevated than Rangers-Twins, so I'll take the "tired old matchup" in a heartbeat.
Guest Anglesault Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 And then there are us who avoid Yankee-Red Sox games like the plague. Coincidentally, (or perhaps not) the same people who watch their team routinely choke against the Yankees and Red Sox come play off time.
Bored Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 I always love as an A's fan that no matter what the subject you can count on a opposing fan to say "well your team chokes in the playoffs", as if I have anything to do with their Game 5 failures. In any event, the overhype by the media of every single game they play is what turns me off to the rivalry and I typically don't care much about east coast sports teams.
