Granted, it is a solid deal since they are dumping Contreras' contact which is sizeable IIRC. Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2004 Only reason I see for this is Contreras' constant struggles vs. Boston, especially on Sunday where he couldn't throw a friggin' strike at Fenway. Ironically enough the only guy he pitched well against was Nomar. I still think he has better upside than Esteban who had one good year and is the definition of average, and if everyone's healthy Loaiza will probably pitch out of the bullpen in October..... Even when he's pitching well, you always get that feeling that we're on the verge of an implosion. Not to get off topic, but I hate when the same teams always play in the big series', no matter how appealing the hatred between the teams is. I don't see how getting Loiaza is any better than Contreras. Come time for the Playoffs niether guy is going to start if Mussina, Brown, and Vazquez are all healthy to be the 3 starters. That's the way it should be. Nobody gives a flying fuck about Anaheim, or Minnesota, or San Diego, or even Atlanta anymore. And if we don't repeat 2003 and have Chicago and Boston, it's really money. I think Cubs can really snag the wild card now, but that's still a huge disappointment, all things considered. HOW THE HELL CAN WE BE DONE WITH ST. LOUIS?!?!? Anyway, congrats to the Yankees for getting Loaiza. he'll help them out. But I don't think Contreras is going to be any help to the White Sox...but at least the Minnesota Twins aren't world beaters right now, so nobody in the AL Central besides the Royals can really concede the division. Last year I thought the Sox had a good chance of winning, and the Yankees team was better than this year. Loaiza playing on a team that will actually make the playoffs, unlike the sox, may shoot some life into him and he may start pitching like he did last year. When he was unstoppable. 2. If Loaiza continues to flounder his contract is up at the end of the year so that means he's gone. The Yankees have nothing to lose and everything to gain. The best rivalries produce the best baseball (or if not the best baseball, some damn good entertainment), so that's what I want to see. In any event, the overhype by the media of every single game they play is what turns me off to the rivalry and I typically don't care much about east coast sports teams.
