What was the build to the UT/Mankind HIAC match? Something about McMahon challenging Taker, and breaking into Bearer's house? And Taker began to get deeper into character because of it.

 

Help is appreciated.

Mankind cost Undertaker a shot against Austin at KOTR (Kane won the Contenders Match) and Mankind reunited with Bearer the next week, and then Taker destroyed Bearer.

Wasn't Foley basically not over at all before this match?

He was over to a degree. The Cactus Jack and Dude Love characters had run their course and he was in the midst of getting "de-pushed". Even after HiaC, he wasn't pushed as a really big thing until the whole "Vince's son" angle led to him turning babyface and feuding with Rock.

I wouldn't say he wasnt over....cuz he was...But as far as being main card material he wasnt that over.He was in main events, but he was basicly a main event jobber to that point.(think of all the title matches he had with taker in the 90's, he never won once) He was in the crossroads of his career at that point, and I think he was pretty much happy with his career at that point...and I think at that point was only a footnote in the history books.

 

I'm sure he figured by that point the "golden age" of his career was over.

 

After that night...the crossroads took an unexpected turn.

I remember Taker attacking Bearer at his house. It was actually pretty cool when I first saw it. Wasn't Bearer's wife screaming in the scene as well?

About Mankind being over...let's put it this way.

 

Expectation and anticipation for the Taker/Mankind Hell in a Cell Match back in June 1998 was about equal to: Bradshaw/Taker at SummerSlam, or less.

 

Seriously, Taker had a messed up ankle and Foley was de-pushed and boring, as hell. Everyone predicted an unmemorable stinker.

I found him to be a very entertaining part of the show.

Everyone was wrong... Sure the match was no where near a stellar five-star match. But I know people who were in the Igloo that day who felt they didnt get there money's worth untill that match happen.

 

So lets put aside the age old argument of how good the match really was.

redbaron, I think you misunderstood me.

 

"Everyone predicted the match to be a stinker" doesn't mean I found it to be a stinker. The "match" wasn't great but is was memorable. Which was the shocking part.

 

The internet bitched going into the match it would suck. I had no interest in it. Then, the AMAZING SPOTS just...wow, made my jay DROP and made the PPV extra memorable.

 

Amazing historical value, most fans'll never forget it.

I remember ordering so that my pipe dream of King Jarrett could be realized. And I distinctly remember a friend I had invited over to watch it saying, "this match'll suck, i'm going to the bathroom" and when he came back Foley was just about to take the initial dive. Great stuff.

 

About Mankind not being over, at that point I'd compare him to what X-Pac was during the nWo run and Helmsley-McMahon Era run. Always in the ME, but never for any reason.

No.....I understood exactly what you were saying. I was only clarifying it, because every time this topic comes up you have people who bitch and moan about it not being a real match. I do realize you were not one of them.

According to his book Foley was considering retiring during this time period, even after hell in a cell. I remember a story about how he was at an autograph signing with Owen at one table while Sable was at another with Ken Shamrock and how he was pissed that she was getting 4 times as many fans. He was not sure if there was a place in the new "cool" WWF for him, this is why he developed into "funny" Mankind.
