Guest Real F'n Show Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 On the 13th, I'll be seeing Slipknot/Slayer/God Forbid at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids Iowa. Now I've seen Slipknot before, and they were great, and all I hear about Slayer's live show are good things. But I've yet to hear much about God Forbid. Are they any good?
Guest Gene_Madrid Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 I personally think God Forbid is a pretty good band. I guess it depends on what you like as everyone's taste is different. They have some Iron Maiden-esque guitar harmonies but they're still heavy as hell. They have two black dudes in the band. (The singer and the drummer, which is odd for a metal band. Race shouldn't be a factor but it's very rare you see that in true metal bands.) They also have what the kids today would call you're "Hatebreed" or hardcore style breakdowns. (Which kills me when they call it "hardcore" style because Slayer has been doing grooves like that for decades now, see "Raining Blood". But that's another arguement for another day.) Here's a free MP3 of their current single Anti-Hero, which they have a video for. They play it on Headbanger's Ball if you have MTV2. God Forbid- "Anti Hero" BTW, I've been a metal head for many years, have seen Slayer many times, and have been going to concerts for about a decade. If you like the pit, then stay in the front for Slayer. Be warned.....only the strong survive and you'll get trampled. Of course, seeing Slipknot in Iowa is probably a pretty brutal experience as well....can't say I've experienced that one, but I've seen them in Atlanta. Take Care, GM
Steviekick Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 Actually, four out of the five members are black. The guitarists (the Coyle brothers) are as well. Musically, they've been influenced by Slayer, At The Gates, and Hatebreed. Where as bands like Hatebreed are metal influenced hardcore, GF is hardcore influenced metal. I've seen them almost a half dozen times over the years and they never dissappoint. Their pits are brutal (well, the one's I've been to here in Jersey, their home state), because you get those idiot hardcore kids who are kicking and swinging all over the place and then your usual Morbid Angel fans who just like to push and if you piss them off, they get physical in a hurray. If you can, try to talk to them after the show. Everyone in the band is mad cool, very knowledgable about the scene, and they deserve the best of luck. You'll propably see their singer, Byron wandering around. He usually spends most of his time in the crowd, enjoying the show.
HollywoodSpikeJenkins Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 I'm a big fan of God Forbid. Saw them at Ozzfest, and they were one of the top 5 bands on the second stage. Byron was walking around before their set, and both Coyle's are very cool. I also recommend trying to talk to them.

Guest Real F'n Show Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 Thanks guys. I'll probably be getting my ass kicked in the pit, but I'll try to watch for the singer.
NoCalMike Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 I saw God Forbid open for umm....someone approx 3 years ago. At the time I had never heard of them, but I was highly impressed.
Steviekick Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 God Forbid seems to be perpetually on tour. My friend studied in England for a semester and they were actually on his flight back to the US!

They are great guys. Doc was the coolest though, as he kept pointing me out during their set.
Placebo Effect Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 I've been listening to "Gone Forever" for the first time on a loop for two hours, and all I have to say is this. Holy fucking shit. Awesome music. Better Days is next.
Steviekick Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 The song Better Days has a weird QOTSA/Living Color ness to it.
