Pronounciation of PURORESU

Recommended Posts

Guest Contentious C

Listen to how the announcers say it on tapes. That's how it's pronounced.

It's pronounced "pro-wres" End of fucking discussion.

Well, if YOU said it, then it sooo must be true.

I believe the correct pronunciantion would be "poo ro reh suu" because of how the Japanese language works. It's suppossed to be "pro-wres," it's just not possible to spell it that way in Japanese.

Please, if you actually knew anything about the Japanese language, you would know they prononunce the"u" sound VERY lightly, to the point it's pretty much like the silent k in knight. Now, take the u's out of puroresu. What are you left with?

So there's a "u" in the Japanese Alphabet? Or a "p, r, s, e"? You see, Puroresu is an English spelling of a Japanese pronunciation. How do I know? Simple. I can't read Japanese at all, but I can read that.

Here's another thread on proper pronounciation that may help you guys out.

The "U" is there, but its very quickly pronounced. Such as in Kensuke Sasaki. It sounds like Kenske Sasaki. So far the only exception I've come across is Hayabusa.

Because after all, guys who can barely get a fucking name right are the ones who are going to be experts. The only PPH guy who's worth listening to on those shows re: pronunciation is Adam Randis/Dynamic A. Zach is a semi-idiot, and the other dude, Dr. Whatever, is a nimrod.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told that in Japan, when new things come out that only have English words or whatever, they Japanese sometimes take the word, and say it with a thick enough Japanese accent for long enough that it becomes the word. I used to have a list of words like this (Uncle John's Bathroom Reader books - good stuff) but I can't find it.

Is that not what happened here? I was under the impression that when wrestling came to Japan, everyone tried to say Pro-wrestle, but due to the Japanese accent, it just kinda melted into puroresu.

I don't purport to be any sort of expert on Japanese pronunciation, but isn't it possible that there are several different ways to pronounce 'puroresu', all used by the Japanese? Just a thought. Also, can someone clear up for me whether it's 'tum-ey-to' or 'tum-ah-to'?

I like you, you're acting like an ass for nothing. Anyways, I'll stop arguing with you, as you are pretty much right. I already knew about the "u" thing, but I didn't really bother to think about it. Pronouncing it phonetically wouldn't be comepletey wrong, but your way is the much better (and easier) way. You win, I lose. Now get whatever the fuck that thing is outta your ass and we'll both be happy.
