Ummm....if you mean they look the same in that they're all Invision boards, then yes. Would you rather everyone go back to using EZboard eyesores?

I can install free message board software in like 3 clicks. I've got no idea of the level of traffic that something like SKTK gets would start costing me more money, but I imagine that it wouldn't be much.

You must be logged in to view the board. 2. Registrations will be by invite only. The first one is doable; the second one can be partially accomplished by closing registrations, but in what way will I be able to let people I want on the board to register? A secret link?

Catharsis used phpBB, which actually looked somewhat good with the Pulp Fiction skin. I think IPB > phpBB, but they're still leaps and bounds above ezboards. What's Catharsis?
