This commentary thing has been bugging me

I was watching the Benoit DVD and during Benoit/Booker, Schiavone called a Spine-Buster a Sidewalk Slam.

Wasn't Booker's Spinebuster actually called the Sidewalk Slam? I noticed that but I seem to remember Schiavone calling it that all the time, so figured it was given a seperate name because it was different to the Anderson Spinebuster.

Actually, Ron Simmons's spinebuster was the first sidewalk slam, in that it was like a spinebuster but instead of spinning around, Simmons just picked up his opponent and drove the guy straight into the mat, kinda like Batista's. Somewhere along the line, somebody started calling Dino Bravo's side slam a sidewalk slam, and it stuck.

Of course, that never stopped Schiavone from calling a ham sandwich a sidewalk slam.

This does bother me a little bit, but I have a much bigger problem with them talking about another wrestler/angle/match during a mid-lower card match. I personally think THAT is a big reason that they have a hard time building up new stars. THEY ONLY TALK ABOUT THE 3-4 TOP GUYS EVER!

Posted

My biggest problem is when they do not focus on the match at hand. It's only worse when they are talking about something that happened a long time ago, or when Lawler talks about nothing but the women from earlier.

Simply put, I wish that they would focus on more important things.

I couldn't agree with this state ment more. Ditto 100%.

Simmons version is what I always thought a sidewalk slam was (despite JR constantly calling it a spinebuster). I thought the Bravo version was simply a side slam.

Blah, don't agree with DH, I said it a mere 3 minutes before him :)

What bugs me more about announcers is how they seem to be the DUMBEST people at the show. Like this whole Stevie Richards-Victoria thing. The crowd was audibly chanting 'Stevie, Stevie' yet JR and King still acted like this was some sort of big mystery. They were in the arena, you know they can hear the chant.

And they always seem so shocked when somebody turns on somebody else. Haven't they been watching pro wrestling for the last 20 years? When somebody turns on somebody else it isn't the 'most shocking thing' they've ever seen. They've seen it millions of times before!

I understand announcing in kayfabe but c'mon, sometimes it seems like every show is the first wrestling show they've ever seen.

^ If we are talking about announcers being stupid, let me throw in the special guest referee one.

Heel Announcer: You gotta admit, <Insert Name> is calling it right down the middle.

Face Announcer: He is. I'll give him that. Let's hope it stays this way.

10 minytes later, referee screws over face.

Face Announcer: I don't believe this! And after I thought this guy was calling it down the middle! Damn it!

Idiots.

I agree. Commentators should spend more time focusing on the match.

However, I feel that Michael Cole is the worst offender for this. He never seems to want to call a match and instead like to talk about what lead up to it constanlty. I mean Christ Cole just call the friggin' match. The only time he seems to call anything is when someone goes for a cover and they "just kick out!".

That's the problem with WWE now....they insult the viewers intelligence....even casuals who watch the program for about a month...will pick up on the announcers....knowing what they say..will not be the results of the match...

WWE needs new announcers...and a whole new way of thinking....DO NOT INSULT YOUR AUDIENCE...

Whats worse than the WWE announcers trying not to say the names of moves that other promotions have dubbed them...

How about moves that their own people have dubbed

JR had said Edge-O-Matic before I know it...Do I have to go back to 2000 and see him say it... but now Its just some High Impact move, or the BOTTOM DROPPED OUT.... JR you said it... And even worse...since when is a PUNCH a takedown! its a punch you Okle BBQ sucking STONE COLD STONE COLD Chanting FREAK!

I'd hate to be Jim Ross's son and have him be pissed at me for coming home drunk or something equally retarded. His lectures must be both unbelievably funny and frightning, as I bet he gets pretty fucking worked up.

The cues seem to be more visual than verbal to keep the people watching on TV more engaged.

I am in full agreement with everyone that has mentioned how the commentators will talk about stuff that has nothing to do with the match that's actually happening at the present time. But one thing no one has mentioned...

"Enziguri."

Isn't it "enzuigiri" or however the fuck it's spelled? Seems like Joey Styles was the only one that would ever get it right, except he'd usually call it as an "enzuigiri to the back of the head." Uh, I think that's what the word means.

And so goes my average of about one post every 6 months.

My main problem is (More of a Smackdown problem) when big finishers, that HAVE legit names, absolutely never get called by their names.

On Raw, I've totally given up on hearing "Sweet Chin Music" on any kind of regular basis. We'll hear that term once every couple of months, but for the most part, it's the "BAH GAWD SUPERKICK".

Ditto the Showstopper Chokeslam, Trailer Hitch, AnGle Lock, Lasso from El Paso or Regal Stretch. These moves have names that make them unique and more interesting than "chokeslam, ankle lock and "whatasubmissionmove"

IMO, that's also hurting guys like Kenzo, Dupree, Luther and Mordecai. Their finishers all have names, Cole said them once, like the second or third time they did it. And then he just flat out refuses to use the names ever again. That's why these moves can't get over, because no one knows what they're even called. Can you imagine if someone didn't whack Cole upside the dead and force him to say "FU" would fans yell "Death Valley Driver?" every time it was coming?

hey've got to change it so that regular moves once and awhile do make the regular pinfall

What the hell? I remember about a month, maybe two months ago RVD used a Split-Legged Moonsault to finish off Mark Jindrak. Everyone on here went nuts saying its retarded and what not. They let lesser moves finish off opponents and people shit on them... they dont let lesser moves pin their opponents and people shit on them..

Can't we just make up our mind and stop contradicting ourselves?

As for the arguement.. It doesn't bother me. I've been watching wrestling since I was 3 (1990), and it's been happening since then all the time. Cole isn't that bad of an announcer, everyone doenst like him.. but hes not that bad. Tazz and Cole are decent, but JR and King should both get their spots taken away. Make the RAW announcers Josh Matthews and Paul Heyman.. That would be better for Heyman than fuckin' managing that moron, Heidenreich.
