I drive a 93 Grand Prix with 120,000+ miles on it. Tonight on the way home from work I would step on the gas and the engine would rev really loud, but it wouldn't accelerate. Finally it would kick in and accelerate. It did this over and over till I got home. Sometimes if I drove around 30mph and under it wouldn't do it.

Is it my transmission?

Looks like you will have to La Parka your car for the time being (sorry, I couldn't resist).

When I had to replace my car's transmission, it had the sensation of it not getting into gear. Plus it did this for a period of time -- it just didn't crap out one day.

Either way, get it in the shop and get ready to be ripped off...

Get it tuned up first. Transmission service is expensive. Could be something as simple as your fuel injectors being cruddy.

His fuel injectors are fine, or else it wouldn't be revving high.

Yes, it sounds as though your car is having some trouble downshifting to accelerate. As others said, probably a matter of fluid being low, but check first.

I have also recently had car problems. After spending $400 to get a new starter I noticed my radio was not working and one of my automatic locks from the side of my door was put in upside down. I had to drive it back to Michel Tire and ask what the fuck they did to my car, they were being a bitch and said that they do not know why someone would take the lock off the side of my car or mess around with the connection to the radio when I needed a new starter, making it seem as if I had done this. While "getting" a car mechanic is fun, it is not worth paying $400 for a new starter to me. After some arguing, then some kissing, and then more arguing they agreed to look at it, finding out they did screw up and proceeded to fix it. My lesson was never go to a place like Michel Tire, go to a respected mechanic.

Well my Transmission is bad and it would take $1500 to fix. This car isn't worth pumping that much money into so I'm gonna go ahead and get a new car.

It's about time I did anyway. I've just been holding out to see how long this car would last me to save money, but I can afford a new car. So it's time to car shop.

This happened to my old car for a while, and everyone liked "THE BUMP" as we affectionately came to call it. It was the exact same problem, going in reverse was no problem, but putting it into driving forward always caused my engine to rev up and then BUMP~ my car forward, and it would work fine from then on.

I was a brokeass high school student, so I dealt with it for a while up until one day I got out from the gym and it didn't go forward at all. No bump, nothing. I drove the car in reverse the whole way home, and called a tow truck from my house and got it sent to the tranny dealer. Once I fixed the tranny, the bump was gone but it came back later on, in which case I said fuck it and I traded it in for a new car.
